This document is the preface to John Scudder's 1903 book on specific medication and specific medicines. It discusses the theory and practice of specific medication, which aims to match specific pathological conditions to specific remedies based on their ability to oppose disease processes. The preface outlines how specific medication requires accurate diagnosis to identify the exact disease conditions present and knowledge of remedies' opposing effects on those conditions. It argues that medicine's future will involve direct or specific medication once remedies' specific actions are better understood through further investigation and study. The goal is to move beyond current uncertain practices by precisely targeting remedies to corrected defined deviations from health.
Originalbeschreibung:
Specific medication requires specific diagnosis. We do not propose to
teach that single remedies are opposed to diseases according to our present
nosology. These consist of an association of functional and structural lesions,
varying in degree and combination at different times, very rarely the same in any
two cases. To prescribe remedies rationally, we are required to analyze the
disease and separate it into its component elements, and for these we select the
appropriate remedy.
