For your information. As of today, March 11, here is a listing of
workshops scheduled for the TIPA convention in Dallas. All of these
workshops will be on Friday, April 10. Workshops will be held in the
Trinity rooms and in the Majestic rooms.

The listing is subject to change. There are still a few speakers who
have not confirmed their sessions.

Sessions:

1. Using data for maximum impact (how to recognize quality data in


press releases and using research to give your stories punch)
2. I have some comments about comments (discussion about the
process of making a newspaper or web site more interactive,
liabilities and legal concerns)
3. Video for newspapers: How to become visual storytellers
(importance of becoming visual storytellers in today’s newspaper
world)
4. Informal discussion with Hall of Fame inductee Bill Mercer
concerning the broadcast field
5. Documentary presentation and discussion on how Hispanic
journalists have impacted US communication over the past 200
years.
6. Survival of the journalist (how to make yourself marketable in
this economy and how to take advantage of networking)
7. Starting an online or print magazine (the do’s, don’ts and how
to’s)
8. Tips for ensuring accuracy (how to guard for accuracy while
working on deadline)
9. Police and media relations (how to build an effective relationship
with police, release of information to the media)
10.Using stills and video: Visual storytelling in a changing world (a
look at photojournalism and examples used in the Dallas Morning
News)
11.At the edge of life (session on how to incorporate video and stills
together )
12.Be sharp: Tell me about yourself (present yourself to create a
good lasting impression, learn to answer the question “tell me
about yourself” with polish and pizzazz in a job interview)
13.Panel: Making the transition to a four-year college (students who
have made the transition from 2-year to 4-year colleges will offer
tips)
14.Get a job! (practical tips for broadcast students on how to put
together a resume tape, etc.)
15.Role and selection of art for literary magazine (how art is
selected, gathering art, organization of teamwork)
16.The “knows” of public relations (things “I” wish I had known
before starting my career)
17.Crime blogging (the approach to blogging)
18.How to start a literary magazine (how-to session about starting a
literary magazine at your school)
19.Managing editor at 22 (skills learned from college classes and as
editor-in-chief of college paper helped lead to professional
career)
20.You want me to write you a what? (veteran adviser spells out
what students should and shouldn’t be doing as a student
journalist long before internship or graduation time)
21.How to make yourself relevant (tips and discussion from a
veteran sports columnist)
22.Secrets of great resumes (learn about common misconceptions
about resumes and how to showcase your value)
23.Importance of and How to Build Trustworthy Relationships
(focuses on importance of honesty, setting real expectations,
knowing your audience and following up with contacts)
24.Life as a big-city columnist (DMN columnist discusses typical
week, day-to-day activities of the job)
25.Printing 101 & the digital age (overview of web offset printing
process and insight to digital publishing, how to achieve the best
reproduction)
26.How to build a winning team (how to build an award-winning
team, focus on newsroom structure, covering the campus, civic
journalism, alternative storytelling)
