INTRODUCTION
An Automated Teller Machine (ATM) is a familiar and nowadays, quite a popular interface to a bank. It is becoming increasingly common to use an ATM as the main interface, to perform some of the most commonly used banking operations. An ATM machine is not a single device, but a collection of a few other devices. It has a display, a keypad as the main interface. A card reader is used to read information off the ATM card, issued to each account holder availing of the ATM facility. An ATM card can be used to perform transactions on one account only. A printer is used to print receipts of transactions. A deposit box , to accept deposits, is also available. The only requirement is that the deposits be made in a sealed envelope. The deposit box does not validate the content of the sealed envelope, whose details are entered via the ATM. Before performing operations via the ATM, the customer has to log onto the ATM. To logon, the customer has to swipe her card and enter the PIN correctly, which are validated by the system. If the card is not valid, it is returned to the customer. If an inc orrect PIN is entered three times in succession, the ATM retains the card and denies access to the customer. The facilities provided by the ATM are available as operations executed by the ATM. The operations supported by the ATM are: deposit of money, withdrawal of money, checking the balance of an account and changing the PIN. For any of these operations to be utilized by the customer, it is essential that she has logged into the system successfully. Every operation that takes place on the ATM is logged for later verification and cross-checking. A customer can also view her account balance. The cash on withdrawal is given to the customer via the cash dispenser.
