Academic Transcription Services Magazine. Research Interview Transcription

Research interviews have traditionally been a method of data collection associated with the naturalistic (qualitative) paradigm that emphasize the exploration and inquiry of human phenomenon (Halcomb & Andrew, 2005). More recently, however, research interviews have become recognized for their broader application in biomedical and collaborative research. Research interview transcription is what we do. Although rarely explicitly defined, transcription refers to the process of reproducing spoken words into written text. Verbatim interview transcription refers to the word-for-word reproduction of verbal data, where the written words are an exact replication of the audio recorded words (Poland, 1995).

Research Interviews Transcription Formats

Research interviews are primarily conducted in the context of academic research in various disciplines. The process is a selective one whereby certain phenomena or features of talk and interaction are transcribed. Rather than being a problem to overcome, selectivity needs also to be understood as a practical and theoretical necessity (Cook, 1990; Duranti, 1997, 2007). Because it is impossible to record all features of talk and interaction from recordings, all interview transcripts are selective in one way or another. We see interview transcription as a selective process and are guided by the researchers directions and needs. Generally, there are two types of research interview transcription formats that researchers select in relation to the goals of a study. Verbatim interview transcripts are a full transcript of everything that is said in the recording which includes the common ums and ahs, you knows, I mean, and sort of et. al. Verbatim transcripts also includes all repeated words (max 3), stutters and stammers, and all nonstandard language e.g. aint, cause. If a researcher wishes, we can also include throat clearing, coughing, laughter, details of interruptions, time stamps et. al. Another popular transcription format that we use when transcribing an interview is intelligent verbatim. The aim of an intelligent verbatim interview transcript has less to do with depicting accents or involuntary vocalization. Rather, accuracy concerns the substance of the research interview, that is, the meanings and perceptions created and shared during a conversation. Yet while still working for a full and faithful transcription (Cameron 2001: 33). This approach has found particular relevance in variants of ethnography (Agar 1996; Carspecken 1996), grounded theory (Charmaz 2000) and critical discourse analysis (Fairclough 1993; van Dijk 1999). Qualitative Interview transcription quality as an important aspect of rigor in qualitative research. One of the strategies of avoiding transcription errors is to employ the services of a professional transcriber. As a result of their training, these professionals have a high degree of accuracy in the transcription process. In addition having transcribers on your team who are invested in the project and committed to accuracy at every phase is essential to the integrity of the study and necessary for establishing dependability and confirmability. Employing professional transcribers address the issue of trustworthiness (Dressler & Kreuz, 2000).
