BREAKING NEWS!

Welcome to the Valley Patriots 9th Anniversary Bash. When we started this little venture nine years ago we knew nothing about the newspaper business. We knew nothing about advertising. We had no knowledge at all on how newspapers were distributed how much it would cost, or even how to design an ad. But, we did know this; you the general public were not getting the straight scoop from local newspapers on what was REALLY happening in your communities. We knew that there were thousands of people out there whose voices were being silenced or ignored because they didnt fit with the political or media insiders. They you had no vehicle to express your concerns and opinions. And we knew that if we found a way to give all of you real news, real investigations with real facts, accompanied by the context of reader submitted opinion columns, readers and advertisers would come! From our very first edition we got phone calls from every-day people who wanted to help. They were people who witnessed crimes, or had information through their jobs at city halls, or other government services. They were people who read the news every day and knew first hand that what they were reading wasnt true. Some were even the politicians themselves who were purposely targeted by the daily paper for trying to expose an issue that was not popular with the insiders. And they all told the same story, though their circumstances were different. Every one of them believed that they had been shut out of the political process and the public debate. Every one of them believed that they had a contribution to make but they were being shortchanged because the Merrimack Valley was dominated by one newspaper. Thats when we knew that the key to making a REAL local newspaper appeal to REAL people was letting them ... YOU ... tell the story with no editorial board filter, and no sacred cows to protect, no media manipulations. We knew that if we just provided the vehicle, a healthy public debate would emerge and

ITS ALL BECAUSE OF YOU!

Our True Vision Softball Leage World Series Championship Valley Patriots
the public would be educated in a way you cant find ANYWHERE else. In the last nine years we have let YOU tell YOUR stories about YOUR perspectives on what is going on in our government and in our communities. You have given us your opinions, your news tips, advertised your businesses, sent in your letters and columns, cartoons, photos, and event notices. You have joined the Valley Patriot family by sending in your information, spreading the word, handing a newspaper off to a friend, recommending us to your local supermarkets, rallying for us when we were being attacked, reading us, and most importantly coming back for more! So tonight is about YOU. Those of you who contribute to and read this monthly publication every month. You have helped us succeed as the newspaper startup that the experts laughed at on day one, the politicians tried to ignore, and the competition coudnt stop! Our success is YOUR success. THANK YOU! WE HOPE YOU ENJOY THE NIGHT! VALLEY PATRIOT AWARDS

Because we at the Valley Patriot are all about the little guys, we want to honor the many readers who contribute in small but significant ways to promoting the paper and spreading the word. Tonight we will give honorable mention to one of our readers who shows a particular interest in what we do and has a very unique way of doing it.

VALLEY PATRIOT HONORARAY MENTION AWARD:

VALLEY PATRIOT CONFIDENTIAL INFORMANT AWARD

Since the day we started the Valley Patriot, way back in the early days of the Sullivan Administration in Lawrence, this brave soul has leaked more information to the Valley Patriot than the guys who did the Watergate break in.

Tonight we honor two people who have made incredible contributions to the Valley Patriot above and beyond what is expected or even asked of them. Both of these individuals have gone out in the rain, snow and 90 degree summer temperatures to deliver newspapers. They have also advertised with us, recommended us to friends and family, written columns, called us with news tips, helped us expose more than a few scandals, and promoted us at public meetings and debates. Both of these special people have done all of this for the last 5-9 years (one since 2004) and believe it or not, they refuse to be paid for their efforts. It is our honor to know both of them and tonight we want to honor them for all the times we may have forgotten to say THANK YOU.

VALLEY PATRIOT GOOD WILL AMBASSADOR AWARD

Because honoring Veterans is so much a part of what we do at The Valley Patriot, tonight we honor two people who themselves honor our hero service men and women here at home. One of our honorees tonight is a veteran and works locally to help other veterans. The other is a civilian who has brought great joy to local veterans and honors them with his/her efforts every month.

VALLEY PATRIOT HERO AWARD

Because The Valley Patriot has enjoyed publishing thousands of submissions by our readers since 2004 it is nearly impossible to single out any one writer without slighting other great writers. So many great columns, letters and news stories have graced our pages in the last nine years that we feel every one of them deserve an award for exposing corruption, highlighting volunteer work, or bringing more honesty to a public debate. But the Editors Choice award isnt just for someone who made a significant contribution to the paper with their writing, but also has made significant contributions to community. WE LOVE PEOPLE WHO WALK THE WALK! So, this years editors choice award will be given to a man who embodies all of that and more.

VALLEY PATRIOT EDITORS CHOICE AWARD

Tonight we honor two people with our Valley Patriot Presidents Award. They were personally chosen by Valley Patriot President Tom Duggan for their daily help in keeping the paper running smoothly behind the scenes. This years recipients have given us their selfless dedication to stepping up when things are needed and doing things that are needed without being asked. Their contribution to the Valley Patriot newspaper makes them invaluable to putting our publication on the streets every month ... for #113 editions! Our first recipient is someone who spends a great deal of his free time on making the newspaper better. He knows the mechanics of distribution and at a moments notice is ready to get papers to Manchester NH, Fitchburg MA, Seabrook NH, or Newburyport. It is in no small part due to this persons efforts that The Valley Patriot can now be found 38 communities. Our second recipient is a someone who is making a real difference on a very large scale by educating the public and working as a political activist. This person quite literally never passes up an opportunity to promote the paper, include us in major events, advises, assists and lends us brain power where and when needed. Both of our Valley Patriot Presidents Award recipients are a vital part of our operation.

VALLEY PATRIOT PRESIDENTS AWARD

THANK YOU HENRYS JEWELRY AND AWARDS ON ESSEX ST. IN LAWRENCE

OFFICER TOM DUGGAN SR. LAW ENFORCEMENT AWARD

On March 16, 1990, Lawrence Police Officer Tom Duggan Sr. lost his life in the line of duty. He was a man who loved being a police officer and lived his life responding to cries for help in the community. While he worked on many major cases and high profile crimes, he always said that it was the day to day work he did helping people in small ways that really made his job worth doing. This year we honor his service and sacrifice by giving members of the community that he left behind The Valley Patriot, Officer Tom Duggan Sr. Law Enforcement Award. The award is given to members of law enforcement (police or fire) and/or civilians who honor the service and great personal sacrifice our local police officers and firefighters.

HONORING THE GREAT RONNIE FORD!

Tonight we honor the GREAT Ronnie Ford of Methuen who passed away earlier this year. Ronnie was not only a legendary radio host throughout the valley for years, he was very special to us here at The Valley Patriot for so many reasons that we couldnt list them all. He was a delivery driver, a salesman and a columnist every month and he was a true friend. He took great pride in being part of our publication and he delighted in the jobs he did for us because he believed in our mission. There will never be another Ronnie Ford.
