Protect yourself from risks associated with tattoos and piercings

Brought to you by

Do not get pierced or tattooed at a party or home. Even your best safety efforts may not protect your from serious infections outside of a licensed, sterile body-modification establishment.

observe for cleanliness

Because body modifications directly open vulnerabilities in your skin, there is no such thing as being too careful when getting your tattoo or piercing. Use of unsterilized equipment poses a serious risk of infections such as hepatitis B & C, and HIV.

_
If youre considering a new tattoo or body piercing, the most important decision you can make is how best to protect your health. All body modifications begin as open wounds, and are vulnerable to infection if not properly taken care of with strict safety precautions.

Always personally witness your artist or piercer open new and sterilized equipment before they begin working on your body.

Body piercings should be done only with a new, sterilized needle; never a piercing gun.

Be aware of your artists or piercers cleanliness practices. They should always wash their hands and use a new pair of latex gloves before working.

be responsible
&
Never get any body modification work done if you or your artist/piercer have been drinking or using drugs. In addition to impairment of judgment, drugs and alcohol in your system during a tattoo or piercing can pose serious health risks.

Tattoo inks should never be shared or reused because blood can get into the ink. New disposable ink containers should be used for every client. In addition, skin to be tattooed should be shaven with a new disposable razor.

This is an autoclave, a machine which sterilizes equipment. If your tattoo artist or piercer does not have one, you should be very concerned.

If in doubt, ASK. A safe artist or piercer should always be willing to discuss their safety practices; if your artist or piercer does not wish to talk about them, you should not allow them to work on your body.

Some parts of the body are riskier to tattoo or pierce than others. Be sure you have a clear understanding of how to keep the area clean and free of infection. Follow your artists or piercers aftercare instructions.
