The Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Spain stagnated in the third quarter of 2011 over the previous quarter. Historically, from 1995 until 2011, Spain's average quarterly GDP Growth was 0.65 percent reaching an historical high of 1.53 percent in December of 1997 and a record low of -1.60 percent in March of 2009. Spain's economy is the fifth largest in Europe. Spain is part of the European Union since 1986 which required the country to open its economy to trade and investment.
