Design Notes
Two QPSK BER Simulation This example demonstrates a BER simulation using two QPSK signals of different bandwidths and an interfering tone. The bandwidth of the 8.5GHz QSPK signal is half that of the 10GHz QPSK signal and is designated as such by setting its SYMRATE parameter to _DRATE/2. Also, to account for its bandwidth being half that of the other signal its SMPSYM parameter is set to _SMPSYM/2. Thus, the time step (1/(SYMRATE x SMPSYM) between samples originating from both QPSK transmitters is equal. The data sources used in this example are independent of each other. This is achieved by setting the random seed (RSEED) parameter of both RND_D sources to a different value. Leaving the RSEED parameter empty, which is the default, causes RND_D to generate a seed based on the ID parameter, which will almost always result in different seeds for different ID values. The variable PWR is effectively sweeping the signal to noise ratio (SNR) from 0dB to 12dB in increments of 1dB. The AWGN channel of 8.5GHz QSPK signal is scaled by +10log\sub 10\nosupersub (2) to compensate for the fact that its bandwidth is half that of the 10GHz signal. This ensures that that total noise power " seen" by both signals is equal. A one input BER meter is used for the 10GHz signal. In this example the combiner sets node 1 as the primary input (see the online help for the combiner). The one input BER meter measures the primary signal's BER and therefore uses the 10GHz signal. Each subsequent modulated signal that is added needs a two-port BER meter (BER_EXT). When using multiple BER meters in one system diagram only one BER meter can have the DETACT parameter (action when minimum errors detected) set to "Complete current block". This is the meter that controls the simulation sweeps. All other BER meters should have their DETACT parameter set to " Do not sweep." See chapter 1 of the online VSS Modeling Guide for more details on controlling simulation sweeps. The frequency selector subcircuit is used to select which signal is to be demodulated by which receiver. The RCVR block operates on the signal at the center frequency. The output spectrum of the combiner can be viewed in the " Spectrum" graph. The resulting BER curves and a QSPK BER reference curve are displayed in the " BER" graph. The red points are generated from demodulating the 10GHz signal. The blue points are generated from the 8.5GHz signal. The black line is the reference curve.
