Falls, Lannon start formal discussions over fire service operations

The Menomonee Falls Village Board approved a motion March 18 directing Village Manager Mark Fitzgerald to negotiate a possible agreement with the village of Lannon regarding fire services in the two communities. The action follows a motion approved by the Lannon Village Board March 11 directing Village President Jerry Newman to negotiate with Menomonee Falls a proposed agreement regarding fire services. The separate motions approved by the communities also call for each representative "to investigate additional cooperation for intergovernmental cooperation" between the communities. The matter was discussed during the Menomonee Falls General Government Committee meeting March 18 prior to the Village Board meeting. Village Attorney Michael Morse said the resolution sets out legal and factual background for authorizing formal negotiations in regard to a potential agreement. Morse said the current agreements between Lannon and Menomonee Falls consist of mutual agreements that the village also has with other communities for assisting with fire protection during emergencies. Director of Protective Services Anna Ruzinski said the communities also have an agreement in which Menomonee Falls will provide dispatch service for their Fire Department in return for Lannon providing fire protection coverage to the southwest portion of Menomonee Falls.

Falls HS pair leading the way to bring clean water to Africa

Its as simple as taking shorter showers and really enjoying that refreshing glass of water, but most people children and adults alike dont grasp the impact. Two Menomonee Falls High School students understand, and theyre doing something about it. Seniors Hannah Mast and Kelly Adlington have started an endeavor to build a well in Africa and to raise awareness of water conservation, an effort they recognize may likely outlast their high school careers but not their passions. For Mast, its a two-year attempt that is finally gaining traction. As a sophomore, she saw a film in biology about Africa lacking clean drinking water. Inspired, Mast tried a few times to garner enough support to build a well in Africa, but couldnt quite find the right opportunity. "I just really wanted to help those people because they were helpless," she said. Then came this year, when Mast and her former biology teacher, Dana Kopatich, approached the Amnesty Club. Adlington, who cofounded the club as a freshman and remains one of its leaders, has been to Africa once herself on a humanitarian mission. Fittingly, the club was looking to do a project just like this. "I got excited about it right away," Adlington said. "Its exactly the kind of thing we wanted to do." Mast and Adlington got connected with The Water Project (thewaterproject.org), a nonprofit organization that builds wells in Africa, and the effort began. Mast and the Amnesty Club created a video that randomly asks students about their water use, features club members providing tips on water conservation and information from The Water Projects work in Africa. Some students said they take 20-minute showers; Adlington spends half that time and she has long hair. Most have no concept how much water they use in doing laundry, dishes, watering plants, in food and in coffee, and just drinking it. The average use, Adlington learned, is 80 to 100 gallons per person per day, all while 1 billion people in the world dont have clean water to drink. "They dont realize they can do something about it," she said. "I think that complacency is what really makes me mad." She has seen the lack of clean waters effect firsthand while in Tanzania last year. The instant Adlington got off the plane she was using bottled water, even to brush her teeth. Locals would walk up to five miles per day just to drink from a dirty stream, and it was all they had. The impact is immeasurable yet obvious. Children get sick from dirty water and dont go to school. Their parents stay home to care for them some even die and dont go to work. Its a vicious cycle. Mast and Adlington are working to help break it, one well at a time. That selflessness and worldly perspective comes as no shock to English teacher and Amnesty Club advisor Beth Larson. She describes both as deep thinkers with even deeper compassion for humanitarian issues. "Hannah and Kelly embody what is great about their generation: the awareness of humanity, the education to make bold statements and ask questions, and the confidence to travel across the world," she said. Wells through The Water Project cost between $7,000 and $35,000. Mast donated $150 from a family garage sale and received a $500 donation from her grandparents. Adlington raised $63 from an exhibit at last Fridays Culture Fair. Mast and Amnesty Club members are working tables this week during lunch to raise awareness and funds this week, desig-

nated as World Water Week. March 22 is World Water Day. Adlington and Mast are aware they may not reach their goal of $7,000 by the time they graduate, both with high honors, but theyre happy to pass on the legacy. "Im so grateful Hannah came to us. Its a way for kids at school to constantly think about water," Adlington said. "I think it would be really cool if we had a water week every year," said Mast. Larson said this kind of compassion from teenagers should reach well beyond the school. "Both of these young women, along with the members of service organizations like ours, should be great inspirations to other students, but especially to adults," she said. "With all of the stories in the media about what this generation is not doing or achieving, here is an example of what they are doing right... about what great opportunities are created in schools, and how parents get it right in raising great kids." Falls Best Buddies Club begins signup for Friendship Walk

BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR The Best Buddies organization at Menomonee Falls High School started its effort last week to sign up people for their team that will participate in the Friendship Walk May 4. Best Buddies was started in 1989. According to the Best Buddies International website, the organization is dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). A kickoff party was held at the high school March 18 to gather support for the Menomonee Falls team in the Friendship Walk. Emma Brose, a senior, said their goal is to raise $800 from the Menomonee Falls Chapter in the walk. This will be the second year the Menomonee Falls High School chapter will be participating in the walk. "We raised $1,000 last year and we're hoping to get over that this year," Brose said. There are currently 50 people in the Menomonee Falls chapter and Brose said the organization is hoping to get more people from the community to sign up for the walk. Signing up for the walk is free. Individuals who raise funds to support Best Buddies are eligible to win prizes. Anyone interested in signing up can go to www.bestbuddieswisconsin.org/downtown to register. Anyone seeking more information can call (414) 271-1470. Brose said between now and the walk the Menomonee Falls chapter will be engaged in fund raising activities and meeting to determine fund raising progress. The second year of Menomonee Falls participation in the walk coincides with the second year of a Best Buddies organization in the district. Karen Richie, a special education teacher at the high school, said she was approached by a parent about starting the organization two years ago. "It takes the fear away. Lots of people will look in my room and wonder what 'those kids' are doing. Well, 'those kids' are just the same as other kids in the high school. It pairs friendships with people who typically would not associate with one another, but they get to know what interests they have,"Richie said. Richie said members fill out a list of their personal interests and activities and then pair up students together. Maggie Calkins, president of Menomonee Falls High School chapter, said she became involved in the organization when it was started two years ago. Calkins noted she volunteered in Riche's classroom during her first two years at the high school. "I just like working with students with special needs. I think there's a great need for (Best Buddies) in our school,"Calkins said. "I think this is a great program it has integrated a lot of (special needs) students to meet new people, (and) hang out with new friends." Brose is paired up with Samantha Weston, who said the organization provides her with the opportunity to "hang out with my buddies" and engage in activities such as watching movies or eating out. "I just want to stress how important Best Buddies in to our community. It has made people a lot more aware of the special education community and how wonderful it is, and how much the kids have to offer. It has just brought our community together, and I love everything that it stands for," Brose said.

The resolutions also note that Menomonee Falls provides snow plowing services to Lannon as well as operational and maintenance services for Lannon's water and sewer systems. Village Manager Mark Fitzgerald said that one of the situations that prompted discussion is the fact that Lannon has trouble responding to daytime situations. "It isn't a perfect system. But the combination of manpower from both actually can be a nice asset. They actually have a lot of good manpower," Fitzgerald said. Fitzgerald said the resolutions were requested because as discussions occurred between chiefs from both communities, "it seemed appropriate to formalize at the policy level so that it was clear that there was a clear path to move forward with formal negotiations." A short time later he added: "This doesn't mean we'll get there, it means we're going to work on a number." Fitzgerald said that issues such as how the fire stations, equipment or manpower would be used "is still very much open ended" at this time.

world. Quintet members John Stevens, Daniel Grabois, and former member Douglas Hill have also composed many works for the group. Barry Kilpatrick writes for the American Record Guide, "The Wisconsin Brass Quintet is a remarkable ensemble that plays with more reckless abandon, warmth, stylistic variety, and interpretive interest than almost any quintet in memory." Formed in 1972, and the talented musicians left their mark throughout the Midwest and made appearances at New Yorks Carnegie Recital Hall and Merkin Concert Hall. The Quintet's educational programs have been presented in such prestigious settings as The Juilliard School and the Yale School of Music. As educators, they seek to influence future generations of chamber performers through clinics, lessons, and workshops for aspiring musicians for all ages. Prior to their evening performance at the Schauer Center, members of the group will lead a 90 minute masterclass at 3:30 pm. Open to the public, RSVP to 262-670-0560, ext. 204. Tickets to Wisconsin Brass Quintet are $19 for Premium seating or $16 for Standard seating. Cash bar opens at 7:00 pm and will remain open for the duration of the evening. Menomonee Falls Director of Engineering Tom Hoffman summarizes plans to repair the Lepper Dam and dredge the Mill Pond next fall. Photo by Thomas J. McKillen.

Village to draw down Lepper dam in fall

BY THOMAS J. MC KILLEN MANAGING EDITOR The Lepper Dam in Menomonee Falls will be drawn down in the fall to allow for dredging to occur during the winter months, village Director of Engineering Tom Hoffman told the Village Board March 18. The dam is located directly north of Main Street and adjacent to the Mill Pond Park shelter. The drawdown was included as part of the villages 2013 capital budget which was approved March 4. Hoffman explained the project consists of drawing down the pond, performing a yearly inspection of the dam and doing grouting and tuck pointing to the structure. In addition, the gates to the dam will be replaced. Hoffman explained that when the village worked on the dam two years ago, the gates didnt seal right due to age. As a result, a different type gate will be installed this time around to avoid leaking water. Just north of the dam the village will dredge sediment from near the structure. Hoffman described that part of the project as something we needed to handle relatively soon, since dredging last occurred in 1994. Under the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) permit the village received to proceed with the project, the village will be allowed to remove 5,000 cubic yards or 75 tons of material. He said the material is about four feet deep behind the dam and is getting close to the spill way. Well take it down to bedrock, Hoffman said of the dredging plan. Hoffman said crews on the project will enter the drawn down area from just north of the park shelter. The Kapur & Associates engineering firm will undertake the design and prepare the permits, which were submitted to the DNR for review. Hoffman said the schedule calls for drawing down the dam after Labor Day. Hoffman said the DNR wanted the drawdown to occur before turtles would seek to find a shelter near the river for winter. In addition, Hoffman said that by undertaking dredging in winter, the material will be frozen and will be easier to remove than if it was wet. Hoffman said it is estimated to take two months to remove all material from the river bed. He said material removed from the river bed will be taken to Waste Management for disposal. Plans call for having the trucks transporting the material go along Roosevelt Drive before turning north at Pilgrim Road to go north to the Waste Management facilities. He said the village is seeking to avoid using Water and Main streets. He estimated the new gates for the dam will be installed in October. Any final restoration will occur in spring 2014.

...Perfect ACT score

From page 1
the class of 2012, only 781 of the more than 1.66 million students earned a composite score of 36. The ACT consists of tests in English, mathematics, reading and science. Each test is scored on a scale of 1-36, and a student's composite score is the average of the four test scores. Scotts outstanding score reflects commitment to his studies, according to Hamilton Principal Candis Mongan. "Academics has been top priority for Michael Scott in high school," Mongan said. "He is a student who takes pride in his achievements, never tires of learning, and challenges those around him." "In addition to his academic success, Michael is a talented musician who contributes his talents in areas beyond the classroom," Mongan said. "He should be very proud of his accomplishments." ACT test scores are accepted by all major U.S. colleges, and exceptional scores of 36 provide colleges with evidence of student readiness for the academic rigors that lie ahead. "While test scores are just one of the many criteria that most colleges consider when making admission decisions, your exceptional ACT composite score should prove helpful as you pursue your education and career goals," Whitmore wrote.

Falls boys basketball coach Leffel resigns from post

Dan Leffel resigned as the varsity boys basketball coach at Menomonee Falls, the school announced in a statement issued March 21. Ive coached for many years and have decided that now is the right time to walk away from coaching to spend quality time with my active family," Leffel said in a statement issued by the district. "Im also looking forward to having more time to dedicate to teaching third grade at Riverside Elementary School." Leffel then added: "I am very proud of the players Ive coached over the years and look back fondly on the time spent teaching those young men the game of basketball, and a little about life outside of the game. I'm thankful for the support of parents, the district, and Indians' fans during my tenure. I wish great success to the next varsity basketball coach of Menomonee Falls and look forward to sitting in the stands with my family and cheering on the program." "Like the entire Menomonee Falls community, I was surprised by the announcement, but commend Dan on the decision to make his family time a priority," Athletic and Activities Director Ryan Anderson in a statement issued by the district. "This years team finished the season with some gritty wins. The future of Falls Basketball is promising. The returning and upcoming players within the program will fuel a solid line-up for years to come." The position was posted by the district March 22. Interested applicants can apply on WECAN or contact district Anderson for more information.

Menomonee Falls High School and University of Wisconsin graduate Janelle Gabrielsen was recently named womens volleyball coach at Concordia University Wisconsin (CUW). Gabrielsen served as the graduate assistant coach for the Falcons during the 2012 season. "I am really excited to become the next volleyball head coach at CUW," Gabrielsen said in a statement issued by the university March 12. Janelle is a household name in the Wisconsin volleyball world and we are looking forward to capitalizing on her knowledge, experience and network. She is the right fit at the right time and we have very high expectations for the program." Gabrielsen graduated from Menomonee Falls in 2008. Working On Your Own Time

(NAPSI)-A number of professionals now work to keep time on their side. That's the news from the job front, where experts say careers with flexible schedules and jobs that let people set their own pace have become hot commodities. For instance, the real estate profession has become popular with people across the U.S. Because of its flexible nature, people can generally work as agents on a full- or part-time basis and often, they set their own schedules. People who want to start a career in real estate generally do so by working through a brokerage firm. The companies can provide leads, contacts and, perhaps most importantly, training. The learning platform leverages the latest technology to deliver career-long learning opportunities to its network of professionals. The real estate system is designed to help new agents learn real estate essentials and to help more seasoned agents continue to hone their skills and business sense. These systems can offer more than 200 self-paced training courses focussed on relevant real estate and technology skills, leadership and management programs-and real estate industry designations, such as Certified Financial Specialist. Such training programs can help busy people train for a career change on their own schedule. The programs can also be used as convenient ways to advance a person's career once she or he has started working in the real estate field. My Time-Jobs that let people manage their own time have become popular in the U.S.
