    Redfordrenegesonfarmworkersafety
    Seedsofreformfailtogerminatewhenreportomitsupdate toOccupationalHealthandSafetyAct
    EdmontonWorkersinAlberta'sagriculturesectordeservebettersaystheAlbertaFederationofLabour. TheAlbertaFarmSafetyAdvisory(AFSA)Councilreport,whichwasreleasedbythegovernmentthisweek, failedtorecommendtheinclusionoffarmworkersinAlberta'sOccupationalHealthandSafetyAct(OHSA). FarmworkersaretheonlyworkersinAlbertawhoareexcludedfromtheAct. AlisonRedfordpromisedchangetoAlberta'sagriculturalworkers,butshe'slettingthosepromisesgo fallow.AlbertaFederationofLabourpresidentGilMcGowansaid.Morethan300farmworkersare seriouslyinjuredeveryyear.Seventeendieeachyear.Theresultsofthisreportwilldolittletochangethat. TheAFSACouncilhadrepresentativesfromindustryandgovernment,butonlyonelabourrepresentative. Recommendationsincluded:

    Strategic,ProvincewideCoordinationandAwareness;EnhancedEducationalResources,Trainingand Certification;FarmRelatedPoliciesandGuidelines;andStrengtheningtheagricultureworkers componentofthecurrentTemporaryForeignWorkerAdvisoryOffice. ManyfarmsinAlbertaarealreadywellrun.Thesearethekindsoffarmsthatwillfollowallthenew guidelines,andallthenewpoliciesthatcomeoutofthisreport,McGowansaid.Theproblemisthatthere arefarmswhereyouseetheappallinglabourpractices.Thosearetheonesthatwon'timprovetheir behaviourunlessthereisregulatorychange. Thereport,whichbeganalmosttwoyearsago,hasbeencompleteformorethanayear,buttheAlberta Governmenthadbeensittingonit.ItwasonlymadepubliconTuesday.Duringtheleaduptoherselection asPremier,AlisonRedfordpromisedtoprovideOHSAprotectionforfarmworkers. Alberta'sagriculturalworkersdeservethesameprotections,samehealthandsafetyregulationthatevery otherAlbertanenjoys,McGowansaid.Untilthegovernmentacts,therewillcontinuetobetoomany workplaceaccidentsonAlberta'sfarmsandagriculturaloperations. 30 MEDIACONTACTS:
