Donald Baker Sped 405 Final Assessment To address a wide range of skills in my classroom, I will need to implement as much

differentiation as possible. Different methods are needed in order to make connections with each student, and it will be my duty to make sure that each of these students feels connected to and able to learn all of the material. It is very necessary for both my instruction methods and the assessments of student learning that I use be differentiated to best allow all of my students to reach their potential. The key to successfully differentiating my instruction and assessments will be in collecting data and tracking progress. It will certainly be hard to know what exact methods work for each student, so some trial and error will be required. By using as many different methods as I can throughout the early part of a course, I can collect data on each students ability and progress with certain methods to see how the students learn best. It will also be necessary that I devise a way to reliably and validly collect data about each assessment or activity and create appropriate progress monitoring tools. Some of the methods and assessments that I can use in an effort to differentiate the material include small group discussions and projects, quick writing activities, and games. My typical progress monitoring tools would involve charts that could be illustrated through simple graphing. While I will not be able to initially pinpoint exact methods that appeal to each of my students, I will be able to gauge what might work by getting to know my students. This is a crucial step in differentiation, as getting to know every student will give me an idea of what material might appeal to them. Through this process I will hopefully be able to identify cultural

factors that could be important to consider, as well as issues such as reading troubles or public speaking anxiety. These initial observations will be very important in selecting teaching methods and assessments. I will also need to consult IEPs and 504 plans in order to make modifications or accommodations for individual students. My progress monitoring data and observations will also be crucial in helping to form academic plans for my students that do have IEPs. Also, as part of my efforts to help everyone reach their potential in the classroom, I will need to make sure that everyone feels comfortable and included. Inclusion is largely addressed by getting to know students and appealing to their cultures and interests through the material. In order to allow everyone to feel secure and comfortable in my classroom, though, I will also need to minimize and hopefully eliminate bullying in my classroom. I will develop a zero tolerance policy with regard to harassment in my classroom, as well as teach what it means to be respectful. It will also be necessary that students have the ability to concentrate in order to succeed, so I will also develop classroom rules with positive reinforcements and consequences in order to promote good behavior. Ultimately, my success as a teacher will rely on my ability to address a wide range of abilities in my classroom. The main thing that I will always need to focus on is getting to know my students and doing my best to address their needs. As long as I keep in mind the things that I have learned and will experience, I will be able to reach all of my students by putting in enough effort and creativity.
