Cooperation

a. Review of journal article or book chapter Shaw Kate, Cooperation comes easily but thinking makes us selfish, September 24 2012 The article I decided to read is untitled Cooperation comes easily but thinking make us selfish which was written by Kate Shaw in 2012. This article is actually a student about human behavior when it comes to cooperation. In the first study the scientist chose 212 participants who were given 40 cents and asked to contribute to a commutate pool. The researchers measured the time it took each participant to make a decision about how much to give, and compared it to the amount of money they contributed. The longer people took to decide, the less generous they were. Afterward, the researchers conducted a variation of this study, but manipulated the amount of time people had in which to decide how much to donate. One group of subjects had to make their decisions within ten seconds; other subjects had to wait ten seconds before they were allowed to contribute anything, and third group of participants had no time constraints at all. The researchers found that subjects under time pressure gave significantly more money than either those that had to wait or those that were unconstrained. The results of the study states that humans are predisposed to cooperation and generosity, and only become selfish when they take time to think about the situation. a. A personal opinion/view of the role/application of the value Cooperation is an act or instance of working or acting together for a common purpose or benefit, it is a very important component in the workplace. As a student soon to be graduating I have been applying for many positions and one thing in common I saw in the job postings was that they are looking for candidates that are able to work in group and have good communication which are parts of being able to cooperate. b. A work place impact/relationship. What is the role of the core value in the work place? How does it influence you as a professional? How would you apply it in the workplace? Cooperation is an essential feature of any workplace, as without it nothing would ever get done. Employees need to collaborate in order to decide how to approach a task and to ensure that everyone knows what their role is. There needs to be compromise and cooperation, because otherwise everything would descend into chaos, with everyone trying to get their point across, shouting increasingly louder to be heard. Cooperation enables a workplace to function much more effectively, as everyone is focused on working together to achieve the same goal.
