Heat Exchanger Design:

Problem statement: Design and Build a Heat transfer equipment/device which extracts maximum heat from the given mass of Hot fluid using a Cold fluid in an indirect contact. Mandatory Rules:

1) The heat transfer equipment, device or prototype (hereafter referred as model) shall be semi -batch (unsteady-state) in nature. Contestants will be provided with A litres volume of hot water (equivalent to mass of B kg) at C C. The cooling medium shall be cold water (tap water) flowing continuously at fixed volumetric flow rate and fixed inlet temperature. Hot water will be filled in the model in the beginning. A funnel with bore will be made available. The run length for demonstrating the working of model shall be D minutes. (The values of A, B,C and D shall be disclosed before the start of run)

2) The mode of heat transfer shall be indirect contact. Care should be taken to prevent mixing of hot and cold fluids within the model as incompliance to this rule can offer penalty as described below: If the difference in mass of hot water added and the mass recovered at the end exceeds 25 grams, the team will be disqualified from the contest. 3) Unsafe models or those using chemicals (physical state) or substances incompatible with the hot or cold media and/or having tendency to react with and/or liberate hazardous substances shall be declared unsafe and be disqualified. 4) Trail runs or preliminary runs shall not be allowed in and around the contest venue. 5) The model shall have provision to fill the hot water at the start of run and withdraw the same at the end of demonstration. The withdrawal connection shall be used only at the end of run to measure temperature in time no less 10 seconds and mass of the hot water. 6) The model shall have provision for cold water inlet and outlet. Cold water will be supplied and withdrawn through rubber tubing. 7) The model shall be sealed properly to prevent any leakages during the run. The decision to allow another attempt shall be made by the judges based on the circumstances. 8) The model shall be limited to a plot space of 30 cm X 30 cm and the maximum height shall be limited to 30 cm.

9) The model shall be static and the working be demonstrated on a table (standard set up at the venue).

In the Spirit of Fair Competition.. Every member of team must a) Observe discipline and help in the success of the event. b) Follow safety practices for the team and other participants.

Please Note.. The organizers reserve the rights to change any or all of the above rules as they deem fit. Change if any will be informed to the contestants at the earliest. The decision of the Judges will be final and irrevocable.

Analysis: Heat duty required for cooling the given mass (m) of hot water from initial temperature (Ti) to final temperature (Tf) is given by, Q = m. cp . (Tf-Ti)

Since the mass of hot water (m) and heat capacity (cp) is constant, the heat transfer is directly proportional to the driving force (Tf-Ti). Also, the initial temperature (Ti) is also kept constant for all the contesting teams, the model with lowest final temperature will be declared as the winning team.

In case of a Tie In case of a tie between teams, the team with highest marks in Heat X-change Cross-Word contest will be the crowned as Winner.

General Rules The participating entries must be as a team of a maximum of three (3) people. B. Tech/B.E. students with valid ID cards of their respective educational institutes are only allowed to participate at ChEMERGENCE11. Every team has to register online at our website www.chemergence.com for the competition. Kindly send in an abstract of your Design complying with the problem statement. The abstract should be e-mailed to the address heatexchanger11@chemergence.com on or before 21th September, 2011. The selected participants will be intimated by 23nd September, 2011. Only the participants whose abstracts will be selected shall be eligible for the finals at ChEMERGENCE 11.
