Kelly and Sean Menefee selected Berwick Park in Monterey for their intimate wedding day. Organization was a necessary element to make the day perfect and they found that much of the planning could be done at home, prior to the big day.
ity Hall, the beach, the mountains, a church, a winery ... what do all these have in common? They all could be the perfect location for a wedding. One of the wonderful aspects about planning a wedding in the 21st century is there are no limits to where a couple can have their special day. Having been a wedding photographer for 20-plus years, I have been to weddings in hundreds of locations, with just about every backdrop you can imagine. From New Hampshire to Florida, South Dakota to Oregon, Idaho to the Pacific Ocean and our own backyard of Placer County, there are some spectacular locations in our country. Selecting a venue for your romantic day will involve many considerations. How
many guests you will have, whether the rental fees are within your budget, and the style of your wedding in relation to the venue. Outdoor weddings are increasingly popular and a beach is a perfect location for a couple who loves the great outdoors and one that will work for a wedding that is large or small. Kelly and Sean Menefee chose Berwick Park in Monterey and the Pacific Ocean for the backdrop of their special day. With just close friends and family in attendance, they wanted to also be budget conscience. With some planning, you can definitely do a Monterey beach or park wedding on a small-ish budget, Kelly Menefee said. Whether you choose the beaches of Lake Tahoe, the

Many comment on all the compliments they receive from their guests about how comfortable a place it is. Newlyweds Benjamin and Megan (Harris) Bruhn chose the Blue Goose for their July 2012 wedding reception because the 2004 Del Oro High School grads said they had watched the fruit shed being renovated over the years and wanted a place that reflected their home town and could fit their 250 guests, Megan Bruhn said. We had a vintage chic theme and it was the perfect set-up to mesh the rustic atmosphere with elegance, she said. Dustin and Stephanie (White) Fee, both teachers and coaches at Del Oro, picked the Blue Goose for their fun themed reception in July. rom simple elegance to rustic looks, todays brides and grooms are choosing a range of designs and themes for their wedding cakes. Bridal couples are even combining themes by ordering a combination of lace and burlap, said Wendi Calton, owner of Little Bliss Cakery in Granite Bay. Some are asking for bold colors such as eggplant-purple and white while others want fondant flowers and satin ribbon. Ribbons allow brides to pull in their colors on a cake, Calton said. Shes creating cakes with smooth buttercream frosting that looks like fondant and adding rhinestone trim. Brides want simple elegance, she said. Calton also sees a trend toward casual choices such as outdoor or mountain themes. Javier and Esther Aguirre, who own Divine Desserts by Aguirre in Loomis, also get requests to create cake designs from elegant to casual. Aguirre said couples like monograms or fresh flowers, which are delivered by the florist and added to the cake at the reception. Brides also like jewelry on their cake, Aguirre said. People like a little bling.

to the altar. TV shows such as Cake Boss and The Next Best Baker, both on TLC, are giving couples ideas for themes, she said. They see TV stars picking themes and want to try them, too. We especially see that in cakes with Mexican or Lake Tahoe themes. Calton, who learned beginning cake decorating at age 4 when her mom gave her graham crackers to decorate, can be seen mixing batter and baking in the shop. I wanted an open kitchen so people could see how clean we are, she said. Both Calton and Aguirre said that todays couples are looking for ways to cut expenses. Aguirre said people are not choosing fondant for cakes as much as in the past, but prefer buttercream.

o many things to consider in planning your wedding: The guests, the dress, the food, the right colors ... and so on. Inevitably, some of the smallest details can become your receptions biggest challenges. When I meet with my couple prior to their wedding we discuss the music of course, but I find it really helpful for all concerned, if I bring up the DETAILS. I really believe its my job to act as a proxy on site coordinator (if the couple has not hired a professional wedding coordinator) to make sure everything runs smoothly throughout the ceremony and reception. A perfect example is the communication between the photographer and the caterer. If the caterer is expecting to serve a time sensitive meal at 6:30 and the bride and groom are still with the photographer taking pictures at 6:15. This could mean big trouble. I like to take the time to reach out to the photographer and give them a gentle nudge to wrap things up, allowing the bride and groom to join their guests. On the other hand, if the caterer is going to be a little late getting the food ready for service, I like to get the couple announced into the party so that they have time to decompress and relax with a drink and time to mingle with the guests. Although its not an easy subject to broach at a pre-planning meeting, I find it sometimes is very important to find out about the Family Politic. Example: If the bride has a biologic dad and a stepdad whos raised her since elementary school, it becomes an issue for the father/daughter dance ... why not honor them both by playing two separate songs. If the biologic dad brings her down the aisle but doesnt want to dance, do we have a brother or grooms father who would like to step in for the father/daughter dance?

ecisions, decisions. Planning a wedding is a whirlwind of choices, from colors and flower arrangements to finding that perfect venue and hammering out a delicious menu. But arguably the most important decision couples will make is what music to have on their big day. Is it better to hire a DJ to man the mixing board, churning out fun, beloved, danceable music all night long, or should you head down the classic route, keeping it classy with a string quartet? As any respectable wedding vendor will say, its your day, and its up to you. It depends, said Matt Brys, owner and a principal entertainer at Extreme Productions of Roseville. I love a mix of both, but many times it comes down to prices and budget, and I get it. The cool thing, I think, about what we do at our company is people get a sense of that live entertainment

they are entertainers and masters of ceremonies: A DJ would show up and play music and hope for the best. Somebody who owns a wedding or owns an event will sit down with you and build up a soundtrack, a mood and a vibe for each event. That means working with the bride and groom to select atmospheric music for all parts of the wedding, from seating and ceremony to the reception. It also means weeding out those do-not-play songs the couple cant stand, and making sure all sound aspects of the wedding run smoothly. Mountain Event Productions owner Greg Whatley said his crew become wedding planners by proxy, helping make sure everything is where its supposed to be, everyone knows whats going on and the bride and her mother! are happy. We have a motto that we firmly believe in, Whatley explained. Its your wedding. Were just there to make sure it runs smoothly. In addition to emcees, Mountain Event Productions also offers state-of-the-art, multi-camera wedding videography. And his crew can also coordinate unique touches to the evening, including digitally recording the wedding vows and playing them back during an appropriately romantic bride-and-groom dance at the reception. Whatley agreed with Brys that its all up to the couple whether to have live music or a DJ, but pointed out some pros of hiring an emcee. The first thing is the cost, he said. Live bands are extremely expensive, and secondly, limitation. A live band can only know so much music and it cannot paint a reception with broad strokes, and what that means is styles of music. Even though a band may be professionals, and there are a lot of good ones out there, they only have a limited setlist. Thats just the nature of the beast. We have over 12,000 songs at our disposal.

Cost is a big factor in choosing music Whatley said a live band can cost between $3,000 and $5,000. He said he finds that his fee usually comes out to 25 percent of the cost of a live band. Alan Clark, principal cellist for the Auburn Symphony and a member of the Camellia String Quartet of Sacramento, pointed out that a more frugal option than hiring a full band is to have a string quartet at the wedding. Camellia charges $450 for the first hour of music, than $200 per hour after that, along with travel expenses. That cost also includes a consultation with the quartet and bride to select the songs. Live music, Clark said, enhances the tone of the wedding, especially if that music is played by a string quartet. Not only is there lovely music played while the guests are arriving, but the ceremony is enriched by the texture and beauty of the music played while the mothers and grandmothers enter, the bridesmaids enter, and especially while the bride processes down the aisle. Clark said music during a unity candle ceremony, memory candle, prayer or vocal solo is also satisfying. And dont think a string quartet cant get lively the perky music played during bridal
party and guest exits gives a fun sense of completeness to the event. When asked if hiring a live band is worth the expense, Clark responded, Is going to dinner in a nice place with tablecloths, lovely settings, controlled climate and pleasant noise absorption an improvement over a fast-food experience? Of course! This is a special day for many family members beyond the immediate wedding party, and if care is given to enhance the experience for so little expense as a quartet, I think it is a great bargain and money well spent. Ron West of Rocklins DJ West Entertainment said its a given that a couple wants to hire a talented band or DJ for their big day. Finding one is a matter or talking with friends and shopping online, he said, pointing out that he was done weddings with both receptions and a DJ, and it works out great. He added that top-notch talent gets booked a up to a year in advance, so its best to book early. Music can make or break a wedding celebration, West said. Its one of the most important things to consider for your reception and can send your guests home feeling good or going home early.
WHAT TO ASK
Ron West of DJ West Entertainment has been an on-air radio personality and mobile DJ entertainer for more than 25 years. Here, West provides some important questions couples should ask potential wedding DJs. What equipment do you use? If you need a sound system for the ceremony, can you provide this as well? Are you a DJ who will stay in the background making necessary announcements, or will you be visible and more of a performer? What will you wear? (Make sure he knows how you want him to dress.) How is the music selected? Do you have a wide variety of songs available? Can I have a list of songs I do not want played? How do you handle the events of the evening? (It's important to know how the transitions from one activity to another will occur.) Do you offer video projection services for a slide show or music videos? What type of lighting do you offer? Some DJ companies have more than one DJ. Which DJ will be at my wedding? Will you play music as the guests are arriving and during cocktail hour and meal? Do you provide a wireless mic for speeches? Do you have liability insurance? Do you bring backup equipment with you? How early will you be there to set up? Do you have references we may contact?

t has long been thought that the guys role in planning a wedding is to shell out some cash, buy the ring, show up to the ceremony and say, I do. Such is not the case anymore, as more and more men are taking an integral part in the wedding planning process, according to Jody Hoffman, owner of Crazy Girl Events in Meadow Vista. Hoffman specializes in wedding planning and says she has noticed more and more men showing up at bridal Toby Lewis is a shows and taking a more freelance writer vested interest in planand newlywed ning the big day. living in It used to be where the Sacramento. guys just didnt want to do anything, she said. But now, because weddings have changed so much, guys are getting more involved because they want to see what is going to make their wife-tobe happy. I recently experienced this firsthand. My wife and I were married in September and throughout the planning process, I quickly learned that my role would not be to simply show up. Here are some things I learned on how a guy can play a role in the wedding planning process:
Just go with it
I never realized that weddings are not really about the bride and the groom. Oh no, it goes much deeper than that. I didnt know I had so many family members and distant relatives, but once you invite one, it becomes evident you cant leave anyone out lest you dont mind offending some. I also never realized how many gifts you are supposed to buy for so many different people, either out of courtesy, appreciation or respect. This includes bridesmaids gifts, groomsman gifts, gifts for the in-laws, gifts

for the best man and maiden of honor, welcome gifts for all the guests, gifts for people who helped in the planning process, even gifts for the neighbors dog down the street. I also learned that when my future wife asked for my opinion on something (such as wedding invitations, napkin inserts, etc.), she truly wanted to know what I thought, but really she was looking for me to approve what she probably had already chosen. And so I become really adept at saying, Yes, I like that, or, Im not sure, what do you think? From what Ive read, and experienced, most guys tend to zone out when 20 different options for wedding invitations are presented to them. So my advice is to try and figure out what she is partial to, and just go with it.
If theres one thing my intuition tells me, it is that no bride, no matter how Type-A she might be, wants to take on the entire wedding planning process on her own.
Let her know you are just as dedicated as she is in creating a day that you, and hopefully all of your guests, will remember for a lifetime. Odds are that you havent grown up dreaming about your perfect wedding day but she has. Hoffman agrees, stating that when a woman asks her future husband for his opinion, she sincerely wants to know what he thinks. Typically guys are like, I dont know, and that is not an answer, she said. Thats really hard on a bride. It makes things a lot more stressful for the girl.
Most likely, your future wife is going to give you a certain task or tasks that are suited for your specific talents. In my case, it was the music. I was determined to hire a live band that would give a show to be remembered for all time, which turned out to be a much bigger job than I had anticipated. But after several months of organizing the logistics, the music ended up being one of the highlights of the day, and I, as well as our wedding guests Im sure, was quite thankful that I took my one job seriously. Hoffman said that most men enjoy the responsibility of putting the music together, taking part in the food tasting and, of course, helping in the decision of what kind of booze will be served. She also agrees that a man taking a vested interest in planning the wedding goes a long way to making his bride confident and happy on what she hopes to be the day she always dreamt about. They want some sort of teamwork to make this wedding work, she said. Because it is about both of you getting married at the end of the day, and being happy with what youve chosen.
