CategoriesofEffects

There are 3 categories of audio effects, and since we are ina digital domain, in our DAW, we might call this: Digital Signal Processing or a DSP.Thesethreecategoriesaregenerallyrelated tothreeofthesoundproperties. Additionally,IwillrefertotheseeffectsonmydigitalpianoYamahaP120.

First category is dynamic effects and they are related to amplitude. Dynamic effects automatically control volume based on the material over time. For these effects, there are the followingplugins:compressors,limiters,expanders,andgates. On my digitalpiano,thereisasliderforMasterVolume:minmax.Ofcourse,nuanceddynamics isachievedinthefirstplacebykeypressure.

Second category is delay effectsandthesearerelatedtothepropagationprincipleofsound, adding slight delays to the signal which tends to represent spaces that you're inside.Pluginsin this category are: reverbs, delays, phasers, flangers and choruses. They provide us asenseof thespace,impressionthatthesoundisproducedinalargeorsmallroom,oronastage. On my digital piano Reverb settings are: Room, Hall 1, Hall 2, Stage, as well as: Chorus, Phaser,Tremolo,Delay.

Third category is filter effect to control the timbreof the sound. Just to remind you that the timbre is that quality of sound whichallows you to distinguish, for example, yourmother'svoice fromyourfather's,orsoundofaviolinfromaflute.Pluginsinthiscategoryare: highpassfilter,lowpassfilter,bandpassfilter,EQssuchas:parametricfilters,andgraphic equalizers. Onmydigitalpiano,thereisasliderforBrilliance:mellowbright.
