Describe the process of production of pig iron from iron ore Describe the principle of production of steel from pig iron by the following process:- open hearth, Bessemer converter and modern process. Explain the following properties of materials used in engineering:- Elasticity, brittleness, hardness, strength, toughness, ductility, malleability, plasticity and workability. How is steel categorised on basis of carbon percentage. What do you understand by the terms :-cold working, hot working , strain hardening, forging, and stress concentration Define the term isotropic. Explain why rolled steel is non isotropic What is heat treatment? Briefly describe the following heat process:- tempering, annealing, normalizing and hardening. What are its uses.
State the composition of the following materials:- Cast Iron, Cast Steel ,Mild Steel, Stainless Steel and high tensile steel. Briefly compare their properties characteristic and list their use. Specify the machinery where the above material are used onboard ship with reasons Identify the equipments where following alloys used : Brass, Grey Cast Iron, Gun metal, Monel metal, Cupro nickel, Cast Steel. Draw the pressure vs volume curves for the Otto, Diesel and Dual cycle and compare the process. Compare the advantages and disadvantages of these cycles. How is the actual cycle process measured in an operating engine. Define ENGINE. Define INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE.What is the meaning of SI and CI engine? Diesel engine is what type? Explain a 2 stroke and a 4 stroke cycle. Compare the cycle for a 2 stroke and a 4 stroke diesel engine. Draw p-v curves and identify important phases of the stroke in it. Prove mathematically :- the area under a P-V curve is the work done. Explain how DC is produced and Identify the parts and explain the functions of those parts of a DC generator. The basics of AC and DC current/voltage characteristics. Knowledge of phase vectors, phase difference and RMS voltage State the uses of the Armature field poles, slip rings, field coils, brushes and springs, commutators Explain the principle of DC motors, back emf, voltage equation. Types of DC motor and their application. Various methods of speed control, Ward Leonard speed control, power losses in D C motor Starters for the dc motor. Circuit explanation Basic knowledge of principle of operation of transformers, circuits and its uses Explain what are the factors controlling the EMF. Equation for finding emf & armature reaction Alternating current through R L C. Draw graphs showing variation of current & applied voltage when ac is applied to these components. Solve problems concerning voltage current impedence, reactance, power and pf of R L C Superimpose the voltage and current graphs to obtain the power graph Explain impedence and compare it with resistance of a DC circuit.
