Why do I need to speak in English? During my elementary years, my English teacher would often scold me of speaking in vernacular in her class. Feelings of inferiority consume my whole being. So I decided to learn. Learning develops into habits. Its quite hard to play the part that you do not want but I got to do this for my futures sake. Now, what a relief! I can make others stare in awe. Their mouth wide-open while I talk with great eloquence. Im now competent! Able to defeat the world at its best. So English for me had made a very great contribution in my life. So is to other people. It becomes the bridge of communication and perhaps the bridge of life. Man depends on their skills of using English language for their businesses and the necessity to interact to people from different walks of life. For it is the universal language; the language Im speaking to you right now. Well I think everythings going smoothly right now because you do understand me, because its English. This is an enough proof for everybody especially my fellow students the hope of Filipinos. That we should do or even try to swallow English, chew and digest carefully as our second Mother language and enhance our skill in speaking, writing, and understanding English. Filipinos have gone too far this time. We are known for our volubility in English speaking. That if youll speak with your brethren in English, youll be scrutinized and criticized. They will scan and point out every incorrect usage of words and grammar. It will be better for them bringing dictionary everyday. But if to other countries, youll be praised for they seldom speak English. They dont care about the grammar itself for whats important is, they do understand what youre talking. Language is mans most important tool for survival. It has indeed helped mankind to develop into advanced societies. In todays world language plays a decisive and dominant role in success of every profession and businesses. In the age of globalization, it is of paramount important and lack of proper English language skills create barriers and distortion leading to miscommunication and breakdown in meaning. This can have a negative repercussion for any company, business set-up or even individual. Without language, most human activities will stop. There will be no

literature, no science nor history. Man uses language as his foundation to find his place under the sun. I can now see the world of the future as one vastly improved. I can see mankind working for a better world within the framework of what we have today. It van be improved, not by withdrawal but by intelligent and continuous use of English language as his foundation to find his place under the sun. I believe everyone feels the pressure of our generation, as what they call it the modern times. Its not just about computer literacy or of quality education. It is also about communication.
