MEDITATION & SPIRITUALITY

– THE AFTERSCHO?áOL WAY

BY: DR. T.K. JAIN
AFTERSCHO ?á OL

Yoga is derived from the Sanskrit

word ‘yug’ which means ‘union’,
‘joining’,’ combing’ or’
concentrate’. Now a days it has
become common that people go
to Yoga for relief from certain
ailments and ofcourse that is
possible. But the ultimate goal of
Yoga is union of oneself with
universal force .The great saint
Pathanjali who lived during the 3rd century B.C .has documented
about 185 verses called ‘Pathanjali Sutras’ in which he has
elaborately mentioned the procedures to attain mastery in
Yogasanas

Broadly there are four different types of Yogas namely ;

• Jnana Yoga

• Bhakti Yoga
• Karma Yoga and
• Raja Yoga

In Raja Yoga eight steps have been defined to achieve liberation.

They are
• Yama
• Niyama
• Asana
• Pranayama
• Prathyahara
• Dharana
• Dhyana
• Samadhi

An introduction to Preksha Dhyana:

Preksha Meditation means the balanced management of our
sensory perception. Sensory perception can be managed and has
been managed. We see, hear, taste: this is the employment of
sensory perception. This can be divided into two types: one is
seeing while being affected by attachment and aversion, hearing
while being affected by attachment and aversion, eating, tasting,
etc. while being affected by attachment and aversion. This is how
sensory perception is commonly employed in the world. There is
nothing special about this. Not only man, but other living beings
also employ sensory perception while being affected by
attachment and aversion. As the art of seeing develops, man only

sees. He does not see through attachment and aversion: he only

sees. The use of the word “only”denotes balanced management.
Where it was felt “I only see, only hear, only taste”, it now
purports balanced management of the sensory perception. Its
nature is to know. The common man, however, does not employ
his senses to know, but for attachment and aversion. Upon seeing
another, attachment sprung up and a feeling of love was born.
Upon seeing another, aversion set in and the feeling of hatred
was born.

Preksha means the development of the sense of equanimity

– to open the eye of equanimity. When this eye is opened, we will
see- and only see. We will try to comprehend Reality, know the
Truth. Neither the feeling of like nor dislike will be linked to this.
This is the balanced management of our sensory perception.

Meditation means to control the wavering nature of mind

and to decrease its instability. The two words are ‘restlessness’ &
‘one-pointedness’. The mind cannot remain stable at one point.
Its preferences keep on changing. This is the restless state of
mind. When it stabilizes at an object or at a point, it attains the
steady state. The primary definition of meditation is the practice
of concentration of the mind at one point or base. As our mind is
able to remain steady for a longer and longer time on a preferred
point (which we choose), our concentration power has increased
and restlessness has reduced.

We do not know how to harmonize our thoughts. The flow

of thoughts is continuous. We do not know how to employ them
thoroughly either. Every second, about 30 – 35 thoughts go back
and forth. One thought is followed by the next, & the second
followed by a third. At a time, many thoughts strike our minds, &
if we do not regulate them properly, problems arise. By Preksha
Meditation we learn the art of regulating our thoughts in the right
direction.
Often a question arises in our minds: why should we restrain our
senses? Why should we try to make our mind stable? Why should
we practice concentration? After all, what is the need? Life goes
on anyway. There is no trouble in living life as it is. Then why take
such pains? This is the thought of our progressive world. Do we
wish to remain on the level of sensual consciousness? Or do we
want to reach the world that lies beyond the senses? The
experience of the extra-sensory-world is completely different
from that of sensual consciousness. Once the first experience of
extra-sensory perception sprouts in a person, and the person sees
the first rays shine, he/she visualizes a new world. I would like to
narrate a poignant story in this context.

Main components of Preksha Dhyan:

1. KaU
yotsarga : Relaxation with self awareness for reducing
tension and attachment.
2. AntaryaŽtra : Spine meditation (Internal trip) for upliftment of
flow of energy.

our services. Our purpose is to promote spirituality. Many people

don’t belive on us at the first moment, but when they see our
camps in progress, they start promoting our camps. We believe
that as the time passes, our camps will become popular and we
will be able to spread spirituality across the globe.

There were many moments, when we requested institutions to

give us the permission to conduct meditation camps for their
students – and we were refused. We tried to convince them that
our camps will enable students to increase concentration,
improve memory – but all in vain. Today, after 10 years of
struggle, we are able to conduct camps with less resistance. There
are many institutions/ student unions which inivite us to conduct
such camps.
