Napoleon's Engagement Ring to Josphine Fetches $948,000 At Auction

Forbes~T h e e n g a g e m e n t r i n g t h a t Napoleon Bonaparte gave to his future wife Josphine in 1796 sold for more than $948,000 at auction in France on Sundayshattering its high estimate of $20,000. The gold ring, with an origin listed as 18th Century, is adorned with two pearshaped

stones, a blue sapphire and diamond that rest side by side facing opposite directions. Each gem weighed one carat each. Bidding at the Osenat auction house in Fontainebleau opened at 10,000 euros but the first bid was for 50,000 euros and quickly see Ring on page

The violin played by the bandmaster of the Titanic as the oceanliner sank has been unearthed, a British auction house said Friday. Survivors of the Titanic have said they remember the band, led by Wallace Hartley, playing on deck even as passengers boarded lifeboats after the ship hit an iceberg. Hartleys violin was believed lost in the 1912 disaster, but auctioneers Henry Aldridge & Son say an instrument unearthed in 2006 and has undergone rigorous testing and proven to be Hartleys. The auction house spent the past seven years and thousands of pounds determining the water-stained violins origins, consulting numerous experts including government forensic scientists and Oxford University. The auction house said the rose wood instrument has two long cracks on its body, but is incredibly well-preserved despite its age and exposure to the sea. It estimated the violin is worth six figures. Hartley was one of the 1,517 people

who perished when the Titanic struck an iceberg 565 kilometres south of Newfoundland on April 15, 1912. Some reports at the time suggested Hartleys corpse was found fully dressed with his instrument strapped to his body, though there was also speculation the violin floated off and was lost at sea. Henry Aldridge and Son said it researched the violins story with a Hartley biographer as the instrument underwent forensic testing, uncovering documents that showed Hartley was found with a large leather valise strapped to him and the violin inside. The violin apparently was returned to Hartleys grieving fiance, the auction house said, and later ended up in the hands of the Salvation Army before being given to a violin teacher and ultimately Henry Aldridge & Son. Testing by the U.K. Forensic Science Service showed corrosion deposits were considered compatible with immersion in sea water, while a silver expert studied a plate on the violins neck to determine if it fit the time profile.

CROCKPOT CHICKEN AND RICE CASSEROLE

crockery cookers have 3 settings - high, medium, and keep warm.

Don't use the "keep warm" setting instead of the "cooking" settings for extended periods. Sometimes the high setting will cause overcooking and you will lose the benefits of using a slow cooker. The high setting is best used to bring food up to Variation: leave out the rice and serve over a safe temperature quickly before beginning slow cooking at the "medium" or "normal" setting. If cooked Pennsylvania style wide noodles. Note: Use temperature setting recommended your Crock-Pot is causing liquids to boil, lower the by your owner's manual for cooking. Some setting or meat will become dry and tough.

. . .Ring
went up to $130,000 euros, then pacing itself to $450,000. Several bouts of laughter were heard during the bidding as seen through the auction houses live website. Right before the hammer fell at 630,000 euros someone pushed it to 640,000 which produced more laughter. The sale was held Sunday to honor the 250th anniversary of Josphines birth, according to reports. The ring was described as modest by the auction house from someone who had not yet acquired great wealth and power. However, it gain a lot of international interest based on its historical significance. Empress Josphine was 32 years old, six years older than Napoleon, and a widow with a son and daughter at the time of their marriage on March 9, 1796. According to Napoleon's memoirs written at St. Helena, he met Josephine when her son Eugene came to ask him for the right to keep his father's sword.

Napoleon said yes, and Josephine invited him to her apartment in Paris to thank him. Napoleon was immediately smitten, and within the first couple months of their relationship had fallen completely in love with her. He wrote about this in his memoirs:"Everyone knows the extreme grace of the Empress Josephine and her sweet and attractive manners. The acquaintance soon became intimate and tender, and it was not long before we married." The marriage didn't last, but "Josephine continued to treasure the ring and gave it to her daughter Hortense, later Queen of Holland, through whom it came down to her son, Napoleon III and his wife Empress Eugene. Napoleon III, the last monarch of France, was the nephew and heir of Napoleon. It was sold during Sundays auction of the Collection of Prince Victor Napoleon and Princess Clementine of Belgium.

The very last Saabs built are going to auction

The 78 vehicles are up for bid at KVDs Marketplace through April 3, and include 31 units of the 9-4X SUV of which only 700 were ever built. Seven of the few dozen 9.5 Sportkambi built are also available, along with 37 of the 2012 Saab 9.5 SportSedan models, out of a total of 54 fabricated. Another sale by bid last year drew a surprising level of interest in the long struggling brand. "We held a similar auction at the end of last year and noticed the strong following that SAAB still has around the world, said Per Blomberg, Business area manager at KVD. The interest was enormous, both in Sweden and internationally. With the last cars now being sold we expect an equally high level of interest from Saab enthusiasts." Some of the vehicles remaining to be sold are among the rarest of the rare. These include the last factory produced Saab 9-3X built by Saab Auto mobile AB one of only three Saab 9-3 SportSedan models in existence that were factory-painted Skyblue. Furthermore, a Saab 9-5 NEW SportSedan TiD6 (Alpha) 2.9 superdiesel is available. Buyers may view the vehicles this coming Friday at Wallhamn, a short distance north of Gothenburg, March 22. For obvious reasons, security is tight and a scheduled appointment is required. If interested, send an e-mail with your name, contact details and the model you are concerned with to saabauction@kvd.se by noon this Thursday. Some of the cars cannot be driven, while others require completion or registration. The condition of each model at auction can be found along with its description on kvdauctions.com. Commissioned by Saab's receivers in bankruptcy, the cars will be sold individually. The auction and bidding takes place on KVD Kvarndammen's market place. The very last vehicles built by Swedish automaker Saab will go under the "hammer" in an online auction

D i s n e y C e l s H e a d l i n e $923,000+ New York Animation Auction

Hand-painted cels and rare animation drawings from artists' personal collections.

DALLAS A three-cel set-up from Walt Disney's classic Lady and the Tramp realized $33,460 and a cel featuring Mickey Mouse as the Sorcerer's Apprentice from Fantasia sold for $26,290 during Heritage Auctions' Animation Art Signature Auction. "Our formula was to auction primarily fresh material that had never before been offered for sale, with almost no reserves, and to cross promote it to a new generation of bidders as well as seasoned animation collectors," said Jim Lentz, Director of Animation Art for Heritage. "We plan to continue in this vein and also to continue emphasizing the whole range of animation from 1928-2000." As expected, Disney animation from the 1937 classic Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs claimed the majority of top lot honors including a Snow White and the Old Hag production cel set-up, fetched $26,290, an Evil Queen production cel with signed card brought $25,095, and a production cel featuring Snow White surrounded by seven pint-sized heroes as she sings "Some Day My Prince Will Come," and accented with a handpainted background, sold for $20,315. A rare character model sheet featuring concept drawings for each of the seven dwarfs, plus notations, realized $6,572. The auction offered collectors a broad range of Walt Disney's imagination as a black and white nitrate production cel with presentation background from the 1931 Mickey Mouse short Traffic Troubles reached $19,120 and a pair of original maquettes of two drunken pirates created in the early 1960s to develop Disneyland's Pirates of the Caribbean ride, quickly sold for $20,315. A number of rarities from Warner Broth

ers Studios proved popular with bidders as an original signed watercolor painting of Pepe Le Pew by Chuck Jones, brought $13,732, an early Wile E. Coyote concept sketch by Jones brought $9,500, and a series of rare 1955 Wile E. Coyote production cels "Snow White and vintage Disney has animation art is roaring back," Lentz said. "It was great to see such an enthusiastic response to this wonderful art form. People loved the broad selection of hand-drawn and handpainted animation art from all eras. They are already asking when we're holding the next auction!" Interest was not limited to feature films as a pan production cel set-up from the 1969 television special It Was a Short Summer, Charlie Brown attained $12,547 and a production cel set-up with background from 1983's The Charlie Brown and Snoopy Show ended at $10,157. A 1990 production cel and background from the first ever episode of The Simpsons sold for $2,031 and a 1962 concept drawing original art for what would become the animated series The Jetsons reached $2,390, while one of five known publicity cels featuring the entire Jetson's cast of characters and signed by the actors who lent their voices to the show's return to syndication in 1985 brought $2,151. The auction also featured a selection of cels from cult classic rock and roll themed cartoons. A three-production cel set-up featuring John Lennon, Jeremy the Boob and Chief Blue Meanie from The Yellow Submarine reached $2,031. The Jackson Five featuring the cast singing their hit "I Want You Back" brought $1,195.
