Class and Workshop Descriptions Spring - 2013 April 21 June 1

Drawing Drawing Fundamentals (2013/3-D1) (Limit 12 students) Apr. 23 May 28, T 9:30 am 12:30 pm This class is an introduction to drawing. The focus will be on how to measure accurately, create depth, use light and shadow and find interesting compositions. You will learn how to use charcoal to interpret what you see as we work from still lifes and photographs. Instructor: Todd Carignan Intermediate Drawing 2013/3-D2 (Limit 12 students) May 3- June 7, F 2:00 5:00 pm This class is a continuation of the Drawing Fundamentals class. Now that you can measure accurately and use charcoal, it is time to explore drawing environments. This class focus is on perspective drawing. We will work from life and photographs to create believable drawings of rooms and buildings, landscapes and cityscapes. Instructor: Todd Carignan Life Drawing Group - Evening (2013/3-LDG1) Tuesdays, 6:00 9:00 pm Ongoing Life Drawing/Painting Group - Morning (2013/3-LDG2) Wednesdays, 9:30 AM- 12:30 am Ongoing This life drawing groups meet on a continuing basis in Studio I. Painting with oils and acrylics and modeling with clay and wax are allowed in addition to dry media and watercolor. The cost is seven sessions for $70 paid using a punch card system. Painting and Mixed Media Acrylic Painting in Depth ( 2013/3-P1) (Limit 12 students) Apr. 23 May 28, T 2:00 5:00 pm This class is a great way to further explore the versatility and mixed media options available with acrylic paint. Painters who have been introduced to acrylic or interested in trying an alternative medium to watercolor or oil will enjoy the similarities as well as expanded techniques provided by texture mediums, glazing and gel transfer processes. Class consists of slide presentations, instructor demos and hands on experimentation. Students can bring in photos to work on personal projects or choose in-class setups for inspiration. Instructor: Kirah Van Sickle Painting for Beginners in Oil or Acrylic (2013/3-P2) (Limit 12 students) Apr. 24 May 29, W 6:00 9:00 pm No fear - all fun! This class is a primer on materials and techniques for the beginner painter. Students will learn about the various mediums, materials and tools, historical perspective, as well as basic fundamentals of color, shape, value and style. Acrylic is versatile and forgiving and will be the medium used for demonstrations. Through lecture, demonstrations and exercises the student will have a framework upon which to grow. . This class will build on fundamentals familiar to the beginner or intermediate painting student who has painted outdoors, and ready to tackle more urban scenes. With a focus on basic color theory, color mixing, perspective, composition, editing, brush handling and value patterns, this class will ensure your

work will become faster, more dynamic and improve your overall confidence. Subjects include streets, signage, cars, telephone poles and people. The first class will meet at the museum for a short lecture and discussion. We will utilize the surrounding grounds as inspiration. Subsequent classes will meet at a predetermined site in the Wilmington area. The instructor will be working in acrylics and sharing tips for using the medium in the field. Students are encouraged to paint in their preferred medium..
Instructor: Kirah Van Sickle Painting With Watercolor (2013/3- P4) (Limit 12 students) Apr. 25 May 30, Th 6:00 9:00 pm This watercolor class for beginner and intermediate level participants emphasizes not just looking, but seeing, and incorporating critical detail into compositions. Students will be invited to participate in art duets, sketching and painting a subject in common with the instructor. Instructor: Fritz Kapraun Mixed Media Exploration (2013/3-MM) (Limit 12 students) Apr. 22 May 27, M 2:00 5:00 pm A venture into the pursuit of experimental surfaces and mediums. Investigate new techniques to approach any composition: collage, bricolage, transfers, image altering, simple printmaking, and contemporary mediums. Instructor: Donna Moore

Beginning Rug Hooking (2013/3-FC1) (Limit 12 students) Apr. 25 May 9, Th 9:30 am 12:30 pm Learn the basics of traditional rug hooking. A project focus during the class allows for students to develop personal color selections and moves from beginning loops to finished product. Instructor: Judy Quintman Intermediate Rug Hooking (2013/3-FC2) (Limit 12 students) May 16 May 30, Th 9:30 am 12:30 pm Take rug hooking to the next step. Learn how to create your own pattern and transfer it to the backing, how to color plan your design and how to dye the wool for your project. You need to have a basic knowledge of rug hooking to move on to this class. Instructor: Judy Quintman

Calligraphy
Japanese Calligraphy (2013/3-JC1) (Limit 8 students) Apr. 22 May 27, M 7:00 8:00 pm This class is appropriate for both beginning and those with previous experience in Japanese Calligraphy. Students study the manner of Calligraphy, learn the three types of letters and student's name in Japanese. Instructor: Mitzi Ito

Beginning DSLR Camera & Basic Digital Photography (2013/3-PH1) (Limit 12 students) Apr. 26 May 31, F 10:00 am Noon Students learn the parts and functions of the DSLR camera and the controls on the camera that alter shutter speed, aperture, and light sensitivity. Students are introduced to basic image manipulation through demonstration, using computers and software. Instructor: Alan Cradick Intermediate Digital Photography - (2013/3-PH2) (Limit 12 students)

Creative Writing
Writing Your Memoir (2013/3-W1) (Limit 8 students) Apr. 24 May 29, W 2:00 4:00 pm Memoirs take many forms and serve a variety of purposes, but memoir writers share at least one common purpose: to record something about their lives in a form that other people can read. Whether you want to leave a rather private record of your life for your friends and family, or a literary work that may reach thousands of readers, this class will help you: find memories to include in your story; organize your memories and reflections into a logical form; produce new writing; revise and polish what you have written. We will spend some class time each week on writing exercises designed to help you generate ideas and new material. We will also look at short excerpts from at least one published memoir each week, and I will suggest memoirs and craft books that you may find inspiring or helpful. We will set aside some time to share your writing if you want to, but no one will ever be required to share. Instructor: Sheila Boneham

Childrens Classes
Preschool Picassos Ages 3 5 with a parent (2013/3-KA1) (Limit 15 students) Apr.22 May 27, M 9:30 am 10:30 am In this class preschool age children along with a parent partner have a chance to explore art and the museum together. Age-appropriate activities are designed to nurture the imagination, foster an interest in art, encourage creativity and introduce children to the Cameron Art Museum in entertaining and engaging ways. All supplies are provided. Parent and child should come dressed to work with a variety of art materials. Instructors: Georgia Mastroieni and Sarah Richter After-school Art Class Ages 6 - 10 (2013/3-KA2) (Limit 15 students) Apr. 24 May 29, W 4:00 5:00 pm Children explore the museum through guided tours, scavenger hunts and special activities, and then express their creativity through hands-on art projects in a variety of media (including drawing, painting, collage, printmaking and sculpture). On the final day of class, there is a Student Art Reception. Instructors: Georgia Mastroieni and Sarah Richter

Pine Needle Basketry Basic Bine Needle Basket (2013/3-BWS1) Apr. 21, Sunday 12 4 pm In this 4 hour session, students will learn how to make a pine needle basket, focusing on how to start, coil, and shape the wall of the piece. One small project will be completed, and another will be started during this workshop. Students will then be able to finish the second piece at home on their own. Students will learn how to locate long leaf pine needles, prepare them for use, and will learn how to seal the finished basket. Instructor: Melanie Walter Life Drawing Workshop: One Day Focus (2013/3-LDWS1) (Limit 12 students) May 4, Sat., 10:00 am 4:00 pm Learn to interpret the human form. This class will deal with measuring accurately, seeing light and shadow, capturing gesture and the body's natural rhythms. Instructor: Todd Carignan

Beginning and Intermediate Watercolor (One-day workshop) (2013/3-PWCWS-1) (Limit 12 students) May. 11, Saturday 10:00 am 4:00 pm Students are introduced to materials, tools and useful techniques, using the watercolor medium through practice exercises. Students are furnished with a basis for finding a unique way of representing objects and learning to see. Instructor: Betty Brown Pine Needle Wine Bottle Coaster Project (2013/3-BWS2) 1 day workshop (Limit 12 students) May 12, Sun. 12:00 to 4:00 pm Students will make a small pine needle wine bottle coaster utilizing the traditional method of pine needle coiling. The project will be started from a cork base and embellished with a choice of beads, nut slices, etc. Instructor: Melanie Walter Wire Sculpture (2013/3 WSWS1) 2 day workshop (Limit 12) May 18, Sat. 10 am 4 pm & May. 19, Sun. 12:00 to 5:00 pm With an emphasis on joining techniques, students work with simple tools and wire to create a wide range of 3 dimensional sculptures. Instructor: Michael Van Hout Drawing and Painting with Pastels (2013/3-DPWS1) - 2 day workshop (Limit 12 students) May. 25, Sat. 10:00 am 4:00 pm & May. 26, Sun. 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm Drawing and painting in pastels for beginners and intermediates. Students use soft (not oil) pastels to create images from still life as well as land and seascapes from photographs. Master artist Hiroshi Sueyoshi offers instruction and demonstration in clay hand-building, wheel-throwing and glazing techniques. Classes appropriate for both novice and experienced clay artists..
