Statement of purpose
I am currently carrying out my education at MHSS College of Engineering, University of
Mumbai. I am applying for the Master’s Degree in Computer Engineering.

Taking a look at devices like the computer, they aren’t built in a single day but have
undergone an evolution. I describe this as an evolution because it is the work of many minds
working with different technologies during different periods of time.

People have put their own inputs and have developed the computer and are still
developing it. Someday I would like to be a part of this evolution of the computer. If we
anatomize the computer field we realize that the computer is just not the convention mouse,
keyboard monitor etc. It has developed into hundreds of systems linked together. I would like to
be a part of this evolution. I plan to make this possible by acquiring more knowledge in the field
of computer engineering. What I have studied in my Bachelor’s degree has formed a base and I
would like build on it with my Master’s degree at your esteemed university, University of
Houston.

During the Computer Engineering course at MHSS my ambitions for casting my own
footprint in this field has been fired even more. The courses in my undergrad have captured my
imagination, the endless possibilities that arise from any field and the technologies that can be
applied are astounding.

My academic track record has been above average over the years. I did falter in third
semester but then I made up for it in the next semester. Somehow I always feel I can do better at
my academics as they are good but there is always room for improvement for me. My GRE and
TOEFL do reflect my verbal prowess but I could have done better would it not have been for the
time constraints.

The projects I worked on in my second year and the currently have given me an insight on
the teamwork and innovation required to build any project. I had worked on a project called the
Image Viewer. This gave us a chance to actually implement what we had learned. The Image
Viewer indexed images and sorted them. It displayed the images and could perform basic
function like zooming and cropping. The code was written in JAVA for the Image Viewer Project.
Currently my team and I have been working on a project called Internet Protocol Television
(IPTV). This project implements the television through the internet. This project has been a
learning experience about the Internet as a whole along with many other concepts including
Networking and Security.

My fields of interest include:

Computer Networks:

This is the upcoming field as in the computers we use today and the information we
exchange between computers is through using the knowledge of computer networks.
 System Security:

This field has enticed me as it is a race between the people who want to protect what has
been created and people who want to destroy. It is the field which is more and more emerging to
be important because it needs a new level of innovation and ideas.

Artificial Intelligence:

This field has caught my attention since the day we had started our Intelligent Systems
class in the seventh semester. It is about how to make a system reach a level such that it can
reason and decide on its own and many other implications.

Apart from the academic side I have a keen interest in music; I play the drums though not
an expert drummer but a pretty decent one. I regularly read comics; I have special interest in the
Japanese manga. I always learned that knowledge has to be respected. What I hold on the
highest would be art in any form even a computer is an art form as it is the vision and
imagination of a line of minds, great minds.

My goal would be to start my own IT firm, which regards research and development as the
precursors to commercial success. To be able to appreciate and understand the importance of
research, I would like to go through the grind and explore the rigors of cutting edge research.
This would bring all round growth for my country and propel it faster ahead and out of the dark
times. After my graduate studies, I would like to work in the industry, preferably in research and
development and would surely make my dream come true.

After a detailed survey, I am convinced that the faculty and the research work at
University of Houston is one of the best and appropriate for me. The program being offered by
your department would help me immensely in culminating my professional objectives. It is my
keen desire to participate in your pioneering research efforts and to be at the forefront of
technology.

I am aware that graduate study calls for a high degree of innovation and commitment. I
am confident that with drive and will to always do better than before will carry me through this
challenging course.
