Walloon Brabant Province :

the green escape the time of pleasures

WELCOME TO WALLOON BRABANT, the destination that will captivate you with its joie de vivre and its long historic tradition at the heart of Europe, a stones throw from Brussels. Take a gentle, perfectly quiet, rolling landscape, punctuate it with charming villages, imposing sites, museums, castles, abbeys and good tables. Add large leisure parks and natural reserves, a healthy dose of golf courses and Templar farms connected by sunken lanes and cycle paths. And then take your time to enjoy this landscape, for your pleasure. Here everything is an invitation to discover and relax : from family days at Walibi to visits full of surprises to monuments as astonishing as the Romanesque Sainte-Gertrude Collegiate Church in Nivelles and the sumptuous Cistercian Abbey in Villers-la-Ville. You can also explore Hesbaye Brabanonne, a land studded with square farms, Gobertange stone houses and extraordinary nature sites like Folx-les-Caves. And then there is Waterloo, where Europe had a great date with history. Walloon Brabant is all of this and more : a highly varied blend of pleasures dotted throughout gentle and poetic landscapes painted with warm light. Europe is encapsulated in Walloon Brabant, which down the centuries has been Gallic, Roman, Bourguignon, Austrian, French and Dutch. The province is beholden to so many authentic values ; not least the friendliness of your welcome, the quality of your comfort and the flavours of a traditional cuisine. These are the main concerns of your host. Gastronomy, like folklore, is a source of pleasure, and Walloon Brabant reserves for you the joys of convivial tables and specialities to suit every taste. This is where the pleasure of your green escape begins in Walloon Brabant !

Dodaine in Nivelles is a park but also a brook that takes you to the water park at the sports centre.

Bois des Rves is a paradise of verdure stretching no less

Walloon Brabant : Roman

Land of breeding and culture, Walloon Brabant is as epicurean as it is welcoming. Farmers and producers who are proud of their traditions and artisan-restaurateurs whose concern is to maintain the quality of the produce all of them participate in food markets and other themed events.
t is true that we have astonishing cheeses and wonderful chocolates, that the climate and the environment are conducive to the breeding of delicious trout and snails, that the brewing tradition justifies our reputation and that a taste of our foie gras is appreciated by all gourmets.

Tarts are also the pride of Walloon Brabant.

The people of Nivelles have been enjoying their tarte al djote for a millennium now. Bi tchaude et bi blete, this nice warm, soft and savoury tart with cheese and chards is baked in a hot oven and topped with a large dollop of salted farm butter. The uncontested star of Brabant cuisine should be consumed with a good Bourgogne wine or a Trappist beer.

esque and oh so gourmet

Other tarts, other tastes : Walloon Brabant is partial to succulent tarts to recipes as varied as they are mouthwatering. Waterloos sweet tart is consumed warm and Chaumont-Gistoux excels with its fruit tart. Wavre and Jodoigne have their fromage blanc tarts, Genappe its Lothier tart and Rixensart its Vi Paurin. While chocolate and the many local beers retain their flavour, charming hostels and restaurants add a gourmet flavour to the green escape and it is always a time of pleasure

Not far from Jodoigne, Pitrain is the birthplace of a world-famous breed of pig. This four-ham swine, which does not have an ounce of fat under its pink and black flesh, is bred in optimal conditions following traditional methods with strict respect for the environment and the animals well-being. The tourist offices will be delighted to give you more information to help you plan your gastronomic stays and visits to producers and farms, with details on seasonal flavours, calendars and the best gourmet addresses.

Ro
History is everywhere : in Virginal, with the glassworks of Fauquez, an astonishing industrial archaeology complex, or in Rebecq, with its two Arenberg mills. Not far from there is the surprising Muse de la Porte in Tubize, in a stunning seventeenth century farmhouse. The Roman Pas, a land rich with culture, offers all of these landscapes, punctuated with a thousand good reasons for so many green escapes.

he time of pleasures and green escape starts at Sainte-Gertrude Collegiate Church. This abbey, a Romanesque gem founded by Charlemagnes forebear Itte of Aquitaine in the seventh century, is the heart of Nivelles, the capital of the Roman Pas, and the birthplace of opulent abbeys and celebrated families. From the gothic pillory and village mill of Braine-le-Chteau take the rural route to Ittre and Oisquercq, in the heart of a magnificent natural environment scattered with volcanic rock.

Romanesque and ever so gourmand. A rich historical and archaeological heritage

Sainte-Gertrude Collegiate Church and archaeology vault in Nivelles
Built at various times in the eleventh century, from both an architectural and an archeological perspective SainteGertrude Collegiate Church is without doubt one of Europes most important Rhine-Romanesque-style monuments. The crypt houses the foundations of five successive churches, built between the seventh and the eleventh centuries. The many tombs include those of Sainte-Gertrude, Charlemagnes first wife Himeltrude and Ermentrude, the granddaughter of Hugo Capet. The crypt also accommodates an ossuary. The capacious Romanesque crypt dates from the eleventh century. A powerful twelfth-century front building is topped with an octagonal church tower containing the stunning Imperial Room. It is flanked by two turrets. The southern turret, the Jean de Nivelles tower, contains the celebrated fifteenth century jacquemard, an automaton that rings the hours of the day on a bell given to the town of Nivelles by Charles the Brave. The Collegiate Churchs interior is an impressive size. Its remarkable furniture includes pieces by the sculptor Laurent Delvaux, Renaissance pieces and fragments of Sainte-Gertrudes reliquary from the thirteenth century.

Breathtaking ruins of an abbey covered by tree hollows

Essential poetry The Villers Abbey
Some members of the Cistercian community in Clairvaux arrived in Villers to found a new abbey in 1146. The monks and converts developed this marshy location hemmed in by steep slopes using an ingenious hydraulic system of subterranean canals, mills and ponds. Built in the seventeenth century, the huge cloister is the centre of the monastery, surrounded by the buildings constructed or converted by the occupants for prayer, receptions and manual work. The abbey reflects every architectural style represented in the region. An important seat of power in the eighteenth century, the abbey was plundered in 1794 and the monks left in 1796. Slowly but surely the abbey acquired its present atmosphere in which nature reigns. The ruins are a source of inspiration for artists and writers : Victor Hugo was inspired by the romantic ambience of the place on several occasions.

The abbey mill now accommodates exhibition spaces and a restaurant. The abbey hosts a range of activities throughout the year, including family days, concerts, exhibitions, conferences and theatre An opportunity for escape !

The Spanish War of Succession

that began in 1700 was a conflict in which many battles were fought and Ramillies was the location for one of them. On 23 May 1706 the Duke of Marlboroughs troops inflicted a severe defeat on the soldiers of Marshall Villeroy. Vanquished and vexed, the French thought up a mocking song, Malbrough sen va-t-en guerre, changing Marlboroughs name slightly to make it easier to pronounce in French. The battle is re-enacted every May.
