Area
Why Madeira?
The Madeira archipelago is made up of the following islands, Porto Santo, Desertas (three
uninhabited Islands: Deserta Grande, Bugio and Ilhu Cho) and the Nature Reserve of Selvagens

Madeira has a land area of 801 km2 and a coastline of 402 km


Area (km2): 801.01 Inhab/Km2: 309.0

Population (N.): 247,568 (2010)

The south coast of the island has the largest number of Madeiras inhabitants, especially the city of
Funchal (40% of total population). The population in the rest of the territory is dispersed and fragmented

Environmental infrastructures have been improved, such as drainage and wastewater treatment
services and solid waste collection and treatment services

Strong public investment in network infrastructures (road network, Madeira airport and maritime
ports)

The Madeira Islands


Madeira
Area: 758.4 km2 North-South: 430 km East-West: 256 km Maximum Height: 1,862 metros Resident population (2010): 243,181 inhabitants Main Characteristics: Madeira island, the largest of the archipelago, has a very irregular orography The economy is mainly based on the services sector and tourism is the largest revenue source of the regional economic activity The industrial sector contributes about 10% to regional GDP Craft activities are gaining importance in the regions economy: embroidery, tapestry and wickerwork have a significant weight in total exports of the island

Porto Santo
Area: 42.6 km2 North-South: 15 km East-West: 12 km Maximum Height: 517 meters Resident population (2010): 4,387 inhabitants

Main Characteristics: The Island of Porto Santo is distinguishable by its sandy soil, a 9 km long yellow sand beach, flat surface and a small green patch The services sector, in particular tourism activities, are the most important sectors in the economic development of the island Significant investment in tourism infrastructures and the transport network (airport and maritime port)

Desertas

Main Characteristics: Desertas are composed of three islets, Cho, Deserta Grande and Bugio and are located in the southwest of Madeira Island With volcanic origin, Desertas have a long rocky and rugged coastline making them almost inaccessible The Nature Reserve has an area of 9,672 ha and includes all islands and islets. The marine area is divided into Partial Reserve in the North, and Complete Reserve in the South Desertas are one of the last strongholds of the Sea Lion. A colony of around 23 animals choose Desertas to live In 1992, Desertas were classified as a Biogenetic Reserve by the Council of Europe, in recognition of its natural and ecological value

Selvagens
Main Characteristics: Composed of two groups of small islands, Selvagens are located about 163 miles from Madeira and represent the extreme south of the Portuguese territory. The most important islets are Selvagem Grande, Selvagem Pequena and Ihu de Fora It has been a Nature Reserve since 1971 and is one of the oldest in Portugal. It was awarded the European Diploma by the Council of Europe This Nature Reserve contributes to the maintenance of global biodiversity: important nesting areas for unusual seabird species; flora with some unique species, maintenance of fish stocks in the Atlantic sea area Selvagens flora was formerly used for commercial purposes and now has an important scientific interest

Why Madeira? Population
With 248,000 inhabitants, Funchal has 40% of the total population. Projection (Eurostat) for 2025:
233,000 inhabitants

30% of the total population in Madeira are under 25 years old and the ageing and dependency
indexes are below the national average. Madeiras inhabitants with more than 65 years only represent 13% of total population, while the national average rate for the same age group is 17.9%

Resident population increased 0.07% in 2010, above the national average, due to the contribution
of the migration component (0.11%). If compared with the year 2001 the population growth was 3%

Education
In the school year 2010/2011, students enrolled in primary and secondary education accounted for
2.9% and 2.8% of the national total, respectively

Between the school year 2006/2007 and 2010/2011, the number of students enrolled in higher
education increased by 9%

Higher education institutions located in Madeira provide a very good range of specialized courses
with a significant innovative component

Secondary Education

In the 4 higher education institutions, located in Madeira, the number of students that enrolled
exceeded 3,500 and graduates were more than 840. The areas of Engineering and Mathematics, Health and Business Studies (Management / Economics / Accounting) were chosen, respectively, by 16.4%, 13.7% and 12.3% the enrolled students. Graduates in these same areas represented, respectively, 12%, 10.5% and 15.2% of total

About 26% of the students enrolled in higher education have chosen S & T areas

Between 2000 and 2009 the gross household disposable income per capita increased by nearly
47.5% as a result of high activity and employment rates

The manufacturing industry is represented by more than 900 companies, which generate a turnover
around 368 million and have approximately 6,000 employees. The most representative industries1 are the following: Metal products (20.1% of total), Food industry (18.9%), Wood and Cork (17.9%) and Non-Metallic Minerals (6.2%)
