E DITORS M ESSAGE Greetings Members, From Astronomy (transit of Venus) to planting saplings to saving non-renewable energy resources, an energy saving alternative to google, blacke!!! Hyderabad section is conducting a lot of activites. Its often said, that if you are invested in stock markets you should have a well diversied portfolio, otherwise you risk losing all your assets. I see a very well diversied IEEE Hyderabad section with a new chapter CAS/EDS introduced. A word to describe this would be RESPLENDENT. Please keep up with the good work. Kudos to all the section, afnity groups and student chapters for showing great enthusiam in conducting activies. I would also like to know about your inputs on closer integration of our newsletter with the social networks. This way we could showcase the latest happenings in our section to IEEE member as well as non IEEE members. Please send your suggestions to rohitvvv@ieeehyd.org. However we will still retatin our pdf newsletter as it serves the purpose of archiving our activites. You can always refer to them years latter. While compiling Synapse I see all the activities coming together. They converge in unison. If you go by the word Synapse, it means a junction. I hope this newsletter acts a synapse between chapters, afnity groups, student branches. This synapse would surely help you pass on your experiences to others in the section. So please do send your articles, reports to the newsletter. I would like to thank Editor Advisor S.K Salankayan and Chairman IEEE Hyderabad Section Dr Atul Negi for their continued guidance from time to time. Wish you happy reading. Have fun. the account of transit of Venus, IEEE-VBIT SB had organized an astronomical event of observing the transit in the college campus by making a telescope arrangement with lters. On June 6, a rare celestial event called a transit of Venus took place, and it wont be repeated in anyones lifetime. The event of Venus passing in front of the Sun is called the transit. This is equivalent to an eclipse with the Moon replaced by the planet Venus. During this transit, Venus has passed directly in front of the sun from Earths perspective, appearing as a small, slowly moving black dot. The transit events are very rare. In the eternal motion around the Sun, planet Venus overtakes the Earth once every twenty

Some lters available are 14 welders glass, aluminized mylar, completely exposed and fully developed black-and-white lm with silver emulsion, medical x-ray lms with images on them, smoked glass, photographic neutral density lters and polarizing lters. So the student branch members had made arrangement for lters too. B. two months. However at that time it need not be aligned with the Sun. As seen from the Earth, it may be above or below the Sun. The orbital planes of Venus and Earth are different. Hence the two planets will be in line with the Sun only when Venus is exactly on specied points which can be either in June or in December. The June events can recur in an interval of 243 years; so can the December events. Moreover, they occur in pairs separated by eight years. They occur in pairs separated by either 105.5 years or 122.5 years depending on the nodes (southern or northern). Thus the sequence is 1631 and 1639, 1761 and 1769, 1874 and 1882, 2004 and 2012. The above gure shows that after 2004 there are ve synodic cycles within 8 years bringing back Venus and Earth to the line of nodes in 2012. The gure formed by joining these conjunctions is called a pentacle.

Palaash VER wondered what if all the natural, non-renewable resources on this planet get exhausted. Today, natural resources are being exploited to an extent that they possess a direct threat of extinction. The use of fossil fuels has shown a tremendous increase in recent times, and thus has been the prime cause of atmospheric pollution. The time has come for the world to change.

In view of the above theme Auroras Technological And Research Institute hosted the one-of-its-kind event titled

Purdue University visited Hyderabad between April 22-24 to educate key local educational centers of excellence on the benets of EPICS and how educational institutions can take up EPICS as part of their undergraduate course curriculum. The system followed at Purdue is that EPICS is considered a project course and students get course credits for working on an EPICS project. Many students start as early as in their rst year of under-graduation and submit their nal project in their fourth year. The EPICS projects teams mostly have students in different years thus lending continuity to the project and sustainability as seniors graduate and depart. Visit to NIT Warrangal Prof. Bill Oakes, accompanied by Prasanna Venkatesan, Member, IEEE Educational Activities Board, visited National Institute of Technology, Warrangal, on Monday, April 23, 2011 and held extensive discussions with the Director and Dean on EPICS projects, its benets and how the college can leverage the same. The college showed a lot of interest in incorporating EPICS as part of the course curriculum and several forward looking plans were made during the discussions with Prof. Oakes. IEEE Educational Activities Board (EAB) organized a symposium on Teacher-in-Service-Program (TISP) to commemorate 10 successful years since the program started within IEEE. The Symposium was held between May 18th20th, 2012 at Tampa, Florida, USA and was well attended by over 35 TISP Champions and several pre-university educators (high school teachers) from 16 countries from around the world representing various Sections and geographies Symposium Agenda and Highlights Day 1 May 19th, 2012 Welcome - Serge Beauzile, Florida West Coast Section Chair and Freddie Wong, Symposium Chair/IEEE Houston Section Group Activity : Lesson Plan Development - Brad Snodgrass, IEEE Central Indiana Section This was a hands on group activity when the participants broke out into 6 groups with a geographic distribution, and worked on coming up with a brand new lesson plan outline. Each of the groups discussed several modern areas of technology like mobile computing, electronic circuitry and so on and how the same can be simplied into a 2 hour lesson plan that can be adopted in the classroom. The educators played an instrumental role in informing TISP volunteers about the subjects being covered in each grade and what topics would be most appropriate for inclusion into the training program. This was followed by a Panel Discussion on Strategies to Support a Teacher Professional Development Program. They spoke about the challenges they face in their school systems and how programs like TISP can go a long way in making learning of science and mathematics a lot more fund and

the things that cannot be changed, courage to change the things which should be changed, and the wisdom to distinguish one from the other. He went on to describe how the TISP program has been a change in mindset within the IEEE and oriented a good amount of IEEE resources towards focusing on pre-university education system from an earlier focus on engineering students and professional member programs. The day concluded with a presentation by Yvonne Pelham, Manager IEEE Educational Outreach. Yvonne covered the mechanisms used to measure the TISP programs including metrics like number of teachers covered, extent to which the hands-on experiments are being used in classrooms, number of TISP programs in each country and so on. Breakout groups to discuss implementation strategies and effective practices for programs that improve the teaching of STEM in the classroom This session involved the participants again breaking out into groups and discuss several topics such as challenges to start, sustain and grow TISP locally, attracting and retaining volunteers, successful approaches to introduce or promote TISP locally, recommendations for enhancing TISP volunteer training, certied provider program and aligning to educational standards, incentives for teachers to use TISP hands-on activities in the classroom, follow-on activities with teachers (i.e. evaluations) and so on. Each group subsequent presented a report of key strategies and recommendations for taking TISP to the next level. Closing Summary/Adjournment - Freddie Wong, Symposium Chair/IEEE Houston Section The Symposium was formally closed by Freddie Wong after thanking all the participants who came over to Florida to attend the program. TISP India Presentation Prasanna Venkatesan, Member - IEEE Educational Activities Board, Chair TISP India Committee, and Past Chair IEEE Hyderabad Section GOLD Afnity Group, who was instrumental in getting the TISP workshop to India in 2011, presented the TISP report from India. Prasanna talked about the TISP initiatives taken up in Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Karnataka and the extent of high schools being reached by the TISP program in each of the states. TISP He also presented the structure of the TISP Committee for India which shall report directly into R10 and drive TISP activities throughout India, initially focusing on the southern states. Prasanna was supported by other TISP volunteers from India including Prakash Sudhir from Bangalore Section, Rashmi Ambale and Padmaprabodh Ambale from Hyderabad Section, and Ranjit Nair and Namith Najeeb from Kerala Section

TISP Best Practices Brad Snodgrass from the Central Indiana Section (CIS) is one of the early pioneers of the TISP program and shared a number of best practices from his Section. In 2009, Central Indiana Section originated what they call the Teacher Grant Program. This program provides money for teachers to purchase materials for classroom presentation of TISP lessons. As of now, CIS remains the only section in IEEE to actively support such a program. Funding A common theme from most volunteers was on how to create a sustainable model of funding for TISP programs. This topic was brought to the fore by Dr. Moshe Kam in his keynote address on May 19th where he outlined the key challenges that the TISP program is facing, including the fact that most of the funding is coming via NIC and Humanitarian ad hoc committee. He stressed the need for TISP to be more selfreliant and raise funds locally. Concluding Remarks

Synapse June 2012

In summary, the TISP program was a highly successful event that allowed volunteers who has been working locally to come together for the rst time at an international level and discuss and share their work, thoughts and recommendations with each other. It allowed the participants to establish a global network on TISP and coordinate activities across sections within and outside geographical boundaries. With this exposure, we at Hyderabad, should be able to take up TISP in a big way and improve the quality of high school education by bringing in more scientic and practical elements to the regular classroom training. In this context, TISP should be not only viewed as a simple training activity but also a social contribution from engineers to the more underprivileged sections of our population who lack teaching resources and facilities.
