Historical Highlights Market City Shopping Center

1946 Three families have a dream of starting a thriving family business, and take a risk and use their life savings to purchase a 3.5-acre vegetable patch with a monkey pod tree at the intersection of what are now Kapiolani Boulevard and Harding Avenue. Market City, Limited, is established. Market City Shopping Center, Hawaiis first modern shopping center, opens, offering approximately 87,000 square feet of retail space and 200 parking spaces. Hawaiis first Foodland Super Market opens at Market City Shopping Center. Wiki Wiki Burger opens at Market City Shopping Center. 1959 1970s 1981 1991 Hawaii becomes 50th state. Lumber and home improvement store, Timber Town, opens at Market City Shopping Center. Foodland Super Market moves to its current location at the east end of Market City Shopping Center next to the Board of Water Supply. Foodland Super Markets former location is divided into several spaces. New tenants include Fun Factory and Market City Shopping Centers first national retailer, Blockbuster. Market City Foundation is established and begins annual tradition of awarding $1,000 scholarships to each of two deserving high school students from the East Honolulu area. Market City Shopping Center celebrates Golden Anniversary (50 years). Sandra Au Fong is recognized as the Women in Business Advocate of the Year by Small Business Week.

2000 Marvin Fong becomes president of Market City, Limited. Ben Franklin Crafts opens and becomes Market City Shopping Centers anchor tenant at lower level. 2008 Market City Shopping Center celebrates 60th anniversary with a 1950s-themed party. The more than 500 people in attendance include Governor Linda Lingle, Lieutenant Governor Duke Aiona; live entertainment includes Elvis and Little Richard impersonators. Anniversary celebration includes giveaway of 60 free turkeys from Foodland. 2009 2010 Organization of Chinese Americans (OCA) Hawaii Chapter honors Sandra Au Fong with its 2009 Corporate Achievement Award. Market City Shopping Center is selected as one of two Hookela Awards finalists for Retail Merchants of Hawaiis 2012 Shopping Center of the Year Achievement Award. Market City Shopping Center is selected as one of three finalists for Hawaii Business magazines SmallBiz Success Awards in the Community Service category. 2012 2013 T-Mobile, L&L Barbecue and Thai House open. Market City Shopping Center celebrates 65th anniversary with a yearlong series of promotions.
