For me we can legislate morality but only in a limited sense.

This is because morality is the foundation of some of our laws but bear in mind not all. For example, there are laws against murder, stealing and perjury (bearing false witness) which are under the things that are considered as violations of the Ten Commandments of God, which is considered as moral actions. But in some countries abortion is legalized which goes against our moral principle which is not to kill another human person. However, there should be a limit to the moral acts should be or that can be legislated. Because in a society like ours, there are many different views of what should fall under the scope of morality. Social norms are legislated by the government of different countries from time to time and this actions places parameters on the acceptable behaviors and actions of the people inside the society. For example, in some places or countries divorce is legalized and is a part of their daily and normal lives. However, in the Philippines, divorce goes against the moral views and understanding of the Filipino people. This is because our morality is greatly influenced by our Christian beliefs and this is the reason why our actions are always generally based on what the scriptures says. According to Thomas Moore during the Puritan attempt at cleaning England, My Lord we should take care not to legislate every virtue or to make criminal every vice; least we give need to jailing all the citizens. For me this means that we cannot legislate every moral value we know because once in a while, we tend to break or stray away from these values. And if these values are legislated then if we break any one of this we become criminals, no matter how small or trivial our offense is. For example, if telling the truth is legislated then, prison facilities wouldnt be enough to sustain the number of criminals convicted to this crime. We all tell a lie every once in a while, sometimes every minute of the day, and for some even their lives are lies, some big, some small, it is even sometimes used to save a persons life. To cheer up a child in Christmas, to prevent friends feelings from getting hurt, sometimes, even to fool ourselves. Then if having too much pride becomes a crime since it is stated that one should not boast ones achievements, then our politicians alone would make up the total number of prisoners under that category. And of course, if loving your neighbors as you love yourself becomes legislated, then I for one would be in jail right now. So, as I have explained by my examples, not all moral acts should be legislated. Because as I believe, people should not be driven to live with virtue because of the fear of the law, people should live with virtue because if they are sensible enough, then they would realize that virtue is the key to harmonious living. Besides, not only that, but because it is the example made by the Lord God for us, his servants to follow.
