Students will focus on improving their listening and speaking skills through an interactive and participatory
approach. This course will be enriched with a variety of media to listen to authentic English and speak in an
extemporaneous manner. Music, You Tube videos, Podcasts and other media will enhance the learning
experience.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
By the end of 2 sessions, students will comfortably and appropriately:
Hold spontaneous conversations on basic and everyday topics (e.g. – weather, sports, health, current
events, etc)
Develop and creatively use their English lexicon
Listen to various types of English media and be able to relate the main idea
Lead a class discussion, ensuring participation of all members
Maintain a balance between accuracy and fluency in speaking skills
EVALUATION
Students will be evaluated based on the 5 areas listed below. Every week, a class member will be
responsible for leading a class discussion. Students will also keep a tally of participation points, which will
contribute to their final mark. A self-assessment will be conducted at the beginning and end of the course.
Finally, there will be 2 exams held at the end of each session. The evaluation will be divided as follows:

EFL COURSE EVALUATION:
SPEAKING AND LISTENING
10 PARTICIPATION POINTS
A student receiving a 10 comes to class prepared; contributes readily to the conversation but doesn’t
dominate it; makes thoughtful contributions that advance the conversation; shows interest in and respect
for others’ views; participates actively in small groups.
8 PARTICIPATION POINTS
Comes to class prepared and makes thoughtful comments when called upon, contributes occasionally
without prompting: shows interest in and respect for others’ views; participates actively in small groups. A
score of 8 may also be appropriate to an active participant whose contributions are less developed or cogent
than those of a 10 but still advance the conversation.
6 PARTICIPATION POINTS
A student receiving a 6 participates in discussion, but in a problematic way. Such students may talk too
much, make rambling or tangential contributions, continually interrupt the instructor with digressive
questions, bluff their way when unprepared, or otherwise dominate discussions, not acknowledging cues of
annoyance from instructor or students.
4 PARTICIPATION POINTS
A student receiving a 4 comes to class prepared, but does not voluntarily contribute to discussions and gives
only minimal answers when called upon. Nevertheless these students show interest in the discussion, listen
attentively, and take notes. Students in this category may be shy or introverted. They may participate fully
in small group discussions. They should work toward making progress in overcoming shyness as the course
progresses.
2 PARTICIPATION POINTS
Students in this range often seem on the margins of the class and may have a negative effect on the
participation of others. Students receiving a 2 often don’t participate because they haven’t read the material
or done the homework. Students receiving a 1 may be actually disruptive, radiating negative energy via
hostile or bored body language, or be overtly rude.

Self-Assessment (10%)
In order to create a sense of self-awareness and progress in class, students are expected to complete a self
assessment. This will improve goal orientation toward a noticeable improvement in language skills. Self-
Assessment will be conducted once every session, worth 5% each.
You will also sign and present a copy of the learning contract to the instructor during the self-assessment
conference, with one copy to keep for yourself.
