MASTER ENERGY STRATEGIES

Master Energy Strategies Programmes

Energy procurement was a question of secondary importance until 1974, when it became a central cost factor to be controlled and monitored. With environmental constraints and the liberalisation of markets, it has now turned into a strategic choice and a factor of uncertainty and risk for countries as well as for firms. The Masters in Energy Strategies provides an understanding of energy issues as well as the capacity to define solutions, and choose and implement strategies for energy procurement and management.

Objectives
For graduates to participate in drafting energy policies for their firms or countries. To succeed at projects involving French firms and institutional players.

Schedule
Linguistic preparation Scientific refresher course (thermodynamics, thermal studies, fluid mechanics, electricity) during the first month A compulsory technological base on energy systems and infrastructures A core curriculum on economy, management and law In-depth technical studies Two foreign languages including French for non-French students and English for non- English speakers

Skills acquired
Knowledge of energy activities and energy markets. Acquisition of the tools needed to compare energy systems, producers and consumers, in accordance with various energy, environmental and economic criteria. Analysis of decisive factors in competition between forms of energy. Understanding the technical issues in energy choices for firms and countries. Carrying out projects with high added value in a liberalised and globalised economic, legal and cultural environment.

Professions
The high current demand for engineers in the energy field explains why all the energy engineers professions are open to graduates from this Masters programme, from research offices, R&D (thanks to the laboratories special connections with industry) and project engineers to finance professions in the energy market. In a field with strong economic constraints and an international context in constant turmoil, this Masters graduates are especially valued when it comes to forecasting professions targeting firms development in new energy markets and/or in new countries.

Professional openings
The opportunities open to graduates are in: Equipment companies (automotive, aeronautics, power stations and infrastructure) Major electricity and gas network operators Public agencies and regulators Oil companies Service firms, especially energy services, a speciality for major French firms Specialised research offices and consulting firms National, regional and local authorities International organisations: International Energy Agency, European Commission, United Nations Programme for the Environment, etc.

Examples of internships
A 5-month project in a research laboratory Examples: modelling of the European market for heat pumps; perspectives for coal industry development, analysis of mergers and acquisitions of power operators within the European Union from 1998 to 2007, analysis of the French wind turbine industry: R&D strategies to be conducted. A project in a firm lasting 5 months Examples: devising a shared climatic representation for electric grid consumption forecast models, evaluating the carbon content of various energy uses, grid for analysis of possible investments for a newcomer to the French electricity market, technical and economic study for the creation of a Solar Electric Station, etc.

Assets
Training in step with industry needs, with study based on the research laboratories of MINES ParisTech that conduct industry-oriented research. The three partner centres for the Masters degree are the Centre Energtique et Procds (CEP), the Centre dEconomie Industrielle (CERNA) and the Geosciences Centre. Living in complete cultural immersion, students follow courses with other students from the MINES ParisTech engineering course. There is also individualised academic counselling, with school years restricted to 15 students in number.

David LILLIENBERG, MSE 2007/2008

My time at Mines ParisTech was a great experience. I met a lot of interesting people, both professors and students, who are close friends of mine today. One of Mines ParisTechs many strengths is the close contact you get with the professors and the schools administration. Moreover, the schools location in central Paris and the fact that it is a prestigious member of the Grandes Ecoles is of course an advantage which made me even more motivated. Further, the master itself deals with several attractive energy topics and offers professional experience. Overall, I was very happy with the arrangement of the master and the good support I got from the school. After graduation from Mines ParisTech, I joined an American consulting firm where I worked with modelling of electricity prices. Today I work at the German utility E.ON with risk management of hydro power. In case you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at: david.lillienberg@mines-paris.org

Luis-Maria BARROSO, MSE 2005/2006

The energy sector always lured me, and working within a world class group has always driven my path. This MsC opened me the doors. With an undergraduate mechanical engineering degree, I was completely decided to delve into the energy sector. With a rich and interesting diversity of curriculum, covering a wide range of knowledge between general management and technical domains, the decision to be an ENSMPs applicant has continuously retrieved me positive experiences. Nowadays, Ive fulfilled my professional expectations undertaking an international business development career and, personally, as a very happy person!
