The Fifth Sunday After Pentecost

July 1 and 2, 2007

WELCOME: To the friends who know us we renew our welcome, to the stranger we extend it
most sincerely. If you are new or a long time resident of our area looking for a church home,
please accept this invitation to meet with one of the pastors at the close of the service or by
appointment at your convenience. If you are visiting us, please sign our Friendship Register
during the offering and accept our invitation to worship with us again.

PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP: Almighty God, you sent your one and only Son as the
Word of life for our eyes to see and our ears to hear. Help us believe what the
Scriptures proclaim about him and do the things that are pleasing in your sight;
through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the
Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

ORDER OF WORSHIP: Common Service – page 15; Communion at 7:30 a.m. and
Monday evening

HYMNS: Sunday 288 536 422

Monday 288 536

MEDITATION BEFORE WORSHIP: It is not always easy to be a Christian, is it? Sometimes

we find it difficult to stand up and be counted. Jesus’ disciples were to find that out in
the days to come. Remember when Jesus fed the 5,000 - Jesus was experiencing a
time in his ministry when “many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed
him” (John 6:66). He then asked his chosen disciples a question as he does in our
Gospel for today. Look at John 6:60-69.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: The Scriptures for today clearly proclaim who Christ is, what his
chief work is and what this means for the life of those who follow him.

FIRST LESSON: Zechariah 13:7-9.

Here we have a picture of Christ as the Shepherd who suffers God’s wrath on our
behalf.

PSALM: Christian Worship # 552, stanzas 1 and 4 - “By All Your Saints Still Striving”

SECOND LESSON: Galatians 3:23-29

No matter what your race, gender, or social status, recognizing Christ in faith
makes you a member of the family of God.

GOSPEL: Luke 9:18-24

Jesus told his disciples of his coming suffering, death, and resurrection. Peter’s
clear confession of Christ is a wonderful example for us.

SERMON TEXT: Luke 9:18-24 Rev. Myron L. Schwanke

SERMON THEME: “What Kind of Disciples Does Jesus Expect?”
1. Those who confess him with their words
2. Those who confess him with their actions.
Holy Communion: The Bible teaches….
 that Jesus' body and blood are truly present in the sacrament.
 that receiving the Lord's Supper in an unworthy manner brings judgment on the
individual.
 that when we receive Communion together we are making a public statement that we
are united in all our teaching and belief.
Therefore, we ask that only those who are members of the Wisconsin Synod or members of
churches in fellowship with the Wisconsin Synod approach the Lord's table for Communion.
Members of St. John's are reminded to thoughtfully and prayerfully prepare to receive the
Lord's body and blood.
Personal Preparation for Holy Communion on page 156.

PRAYER BEFORE COMMUNION: Father, I have sinned against you and yet in mercy you
sacrificed your only Son to purge away my guilt. For his sake, O God, be merciful to me, and in
the joy of your Holy Spirit let me serve you all my days. AMEN.

ZECHARIAH 13:7-9
“Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, against the man who is close to me!” declares the
LORD Almighty. “Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered, and I will turn my hand
against the little ones. In the whole land,” declares the LORD, “two-thirds will be struck down and
perish; yet one-third will be left in it. This third I will bring into the fire; I will refine them like silver
and test them like gold. They will call on my name and I will answer them; I will say, ‘They are my
people,’ and they will say, ‘The LORD is our God.’”

GALATIANS 3:23-29
Before this faith came, we were held prisoners by the law, locked up until faith should be
revealed. So the law was put in charge to lead us to Christ that we might be justified by faith. Now
that faith has come, we are no longer under the supervision of the law.
You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, for all of you who were baptized into
Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male
nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s
seed, and heirs according to the promise.

LUKE 9:18-24
Once when Jesus was praying in private and his disciples were with him, he asked them,
“Who do the crowds say I am?”
They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, that one of the
prophets of long ago has come back to life.”
“But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”
Peter answered, “The Christ of God.”
Jesus strictly warned them not to tell this to anyone. And he said, “The Son of Man must
suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and he
must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.”
Then he said to them all: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up
his cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his
life for me will save it.

now being organized.
