This chapter describes the NETSMART 1500 TL1 uplink feature, the window used to manage it, and how an outside system connects to it. A TL1 uplink is a communication interface (created within TL1 Uplink Management) that allows an outside system to connect to your NETSMART 1500 Element Management System (EMS) and, through it, connect to the entire network of NEs it manages. Interactions through an uplink are by TL1 session. Two types of TL1 sessions are supported: Pass-through sessionA pass-through session is a TL1 session that appears (to the outside system) to be a direct logon to an NE. The session, however, is through the NETSMART 1500 EMS using the NETSMART 1500 logon to the NE. Depending on provisioning (by TL1 Uplink Management), the NETSMART 1500 EMS may filter alarms, deny commands, or reply on behalf of the NE. The pass-through mode is normally used for NE provisioning rather than for network monitoring. Refer to Section 3.2, Pass-Through Sessions [p. 3-6], for more information. SNC sessionAn SNC (subnetwork controller) session is a TL1 session with the NETSMART 1500 EMS itself (rather than with an NE) that allows the outside system to monitor the entire network of managed NEs through a single TL1 session. The SNC session is designed to support upper-layer Network Management Systems (NMSs). The SNC session can be set to forward TL1 autonomous messages from all managed NEs as they occur. The SNC session responds to a special set of TL1 surveillance commands with information retrieved from the NETSMART 1500 database. Refer to Section 3.3, SNC Sessions [p. 3-10], for more information. TL1 Uplink Management provides tools to support the following administration tasks:

Create and manage TL1 uplinks Create and manage uplink user/logon accounts
Note: The uplink user logon account includes the user identifier (user ID) and private identifier (password) that the outside system uses (in the ACT-USER command) to establish a TL1 session.

Create and manage alarm filters and associate alarm filters with uplink user/logon accounts

Uplink Terminology
Table 3-1 [p. 3-3] defines uplink terminology used in this practice.
Table 3-1: Uplink Terminology (1 of 2)

Term
Access control list (ACL) Alarm filter Communication session

Definition
An ACL is a list of TL1 commands that are denied to an uplink user. For more information, refer to Section 4.4, Manage ACLs [p. 4-22]. An alarm filter specifies criteria that an alarm message must meet before it is passed to an uplink user. For more information, refer to Section 4.5, Manage Alarm Filters [p. 4-29]. A communication session is a TCP/IP connection between an outside system and the TL1 uplink feature of the NETSMART 1500 EMS. An uplink can support one or several communication sessions, depending on how it is configured. A TL1 session is established (within a communication session) when the outside user/system issues the ACT-USER TL1 command. The session is terminated when the outside user/system issues the CANC-USER command (or if TL1 Uplink Management disconnects the TL1 session). TL1 Uplink Management supports two types of TL1 sessions: Pass-through sessionA TL1 session that appears (to the outside system) to be a direct logon to an NE but is actually an indirect connection through the NETSMART 1500 EMS, using the NETSMART 1500 logon to the NE, and mediated by the NETSMART 1500 EMS. SNC sessionA TL1 session (with the NETSMART 1500 EMS) that allows the outside system to monitor the entire network of NEs managed by the NETSMART 1500 EMS through a single TL1 session. An SNC session is normally used to support an upper-layer NMS.

CHAPTER 3 TL1 Uplink Management Overview

Table 3-1: Uplink Terminology (2 of 2) Term

Uplink

Definition
A TL1 uplink is a TCP/IP communication interface created and configured within TL1 Uplink Management to allow one or more outside systems to establish a TCP/IP communication session with the TL1 uplink feature of the NETSMART 1500 EMS. For information on creating or modifying an uplink, refer to Section 4.3, Manage Uplinks [p. 4-10]. The uplink name is the unique name given to the uplink to distinguish it from other uplinks. The uplink name is used solely for administrative purposes within the NETSMART 1500 EMS. The uplink configuration includes the connection parameters that the outside system uses to establish a communication session and attributes associated with the uplink. An active uplink is an uplink with at least one communication session currently active. The TL1 uplink user/logon account sets up the user identifier (user ID) and private identifier (password) that the outside user/system uses to establish a TL1 session (with the ACT-USER command). Various attributes of the user/logon account are provisionable, including alarm filters and ACLs. For information on creating or managing user/logon accounts, refer to Section 4.2, Manage Users/Logons [p. 4-2].

3.1.2

TCP/IP Connection
TL1 uplink users establish TL1 sessions within a data communications network (DCN) connection to the NETSMART 1500 EMS via TCP/IP. An uplink can support one or several TCP/IP communication sessions, depending on how it is configured. Each configured uplink specifies an IP address and a subnet mask. The subnet mask determines the security for a given configuration. A remote system can allow a single computer, a range of computers, or all computers to connect to the TL1 uplink application using the subnet mask. For example, to allow all computers to connect, a subnet mask of xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is used. To allow only one computer to connect, a subnet mask of 255.255.255.255 is used, ensuring that only the computer specified in the IP address of the link can connect. If a link network address is 160.25.50.0 with a mask of 255.255.255.0, the range of computers that can connect to this link is 160.25.50.1 through 160.25.50.254. Overlapping of subnet masks is permitted. Connections are made on a best-fit scenario. For example, if an enabled link has a network address of 172.10.0.0 and a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0, and another enabled link exists with a network address of 172.10.50.0 and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, when a remote NMS with a network address of 172.10.50.35 attempts to connect, it uses the second link, following the best-fit rule. A subnet mask of xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is only used if the IP address of the connecting computer fails to match any of the more specific configurations. A duplicate definition of a network address and subnet mask combination is not permitted. A single configuration containing a subnet mask of xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is allowed.
Note: In the subnet masks above, xxx = 255.

CHAPTER 3 TL1 Uplink Management Overview

3.1.3

TL1 Session
After establishing a TCP/IP session with the NETSMART 1500 EMS, the uplink user can establish one or more TL1 sessions (within the TCP/IP communication session) using the ACT-USER TL1 command:
ACT-USER:TID:UID:CTAG::PID; TIDTarget identifier of the NE (for a pass-through session) or SNC (for an SNC session) UIDUser identifier (user ID) of your TL1 uplink user/logon account CTAGCorrelation tag PIDPrivate identifier (password) of your TL1 uplink user/logon account

The uplink user can establish many pass-through sessions (with different NEs) through the TCP/IP connection but should not have an SNC session simultaneous with a pass-through session. Generally, a TL1 session is terminated by the user with the CANC-USER TL1 command. However, the NETSMART 1500 uplink administrator can also disconnect the TL1 session, communication session, or TL1 uplink as described in Section 4.3, Manage Uplinks [p. 4-10].

3.2.1

Pass-Through Session Description

This subsection includes the following items:
ITEM TL1 Commands. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Autonomous TL1 Messages . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . PAGE 3-6 3-7

A TL1 uplink pass-through session is similar to an ordinary TL1 session in that it is established with an individual NE and appears (to the uplink user) like an ordinary TL1 session with the NE. However, the session is through the NETSMART 1500 EMS and uses the existing NETSMART 1500 logon to the NE. The NETSMART 1500 EMS denies or mediates some commands and messages as explained later. A pass-through session can be established with any NE that the NETSMART 1500 EMS is logged on to. In contrast to an SNC session, a pass-through session is intended primarily for provisioning, rather than for monitoring. An uplink user can have several pass-through sessions (with different NEs) open at once but should not have an SNC session simultaneous with a pass-through session.

TL1 Commands
If an uplink user establishes a pass-through session with an NE, the NETSMART 1500 EMS generally forwards any TL1 command entered by the uplink user to the NE and relays the NEs reply back to the uplink user. The following are exceptions:

Commands ALW-DBREPT, INH-DBREPT, ALW-PMREPT, INH-PMREPT, and SET-DAT are denied to the uplink user. If an ACL is associated with the TL1 user account/logon, the TL1 commands listed in that ACL are denied to the uplink user. For more information on ACLs, refer to Section 4.4.2, Associating an Access Control List with an Uplink User/Logon [p. 4-24].

CHAPTER 3 TL1 Uplink Management Pass-Through Sessions

Some commands (such as RTRV-HDR, ACT-USER, and CANC-USER) are answered by the TL1 uplink system without interaction with the NE. For more information, refer to Section 3.4, TL1 Commands [p. 3-13]. When using the Pass Thru mode, the user must enter the TID in upper case.

Autonomous TL1 Messages

If an uplink user establishes a pass-through session with an NE, autonomous messages from the NE are generally forwarded to the uplink user. The following are exceptions:

Transient conditions and messages REPT PM, REPT EVT FILE, REPT AUTO LOGOFF, and REPT DBCHG are never forwarded by TL1 uplink. If an alarm filter is associated with the uplink user account/logon, those messages are not forwarded. For more information on alarm filters, refer to Section 4.5.2, Associating an Alarm Filter with an Uplink User [p. 4-32]. The uplink user can allow and inhibit autonomous messages using the ALW-MSG-ALL and INH-MSG-ALL TL1 commands, respectively. These commands remain in effect for the duration of the pass-through session. The TL1 uplink administrator provides an initial setting (ALW-MSG-ALL or INH-MSG-ALL) for each uplink user account/logon (refer to Section 4.2.1, Adding an Uplink User/Logon [p. 4-3]). The setting takes effect each time the user logs on to an NE, but the user can override the setting with the ALW-MSG-ALL and INH-MSG-ALL TL1 commands.

CHAPTER 3 TL1 Uplink Management Pass-Through Sessions

Establish a Pass-Through Session CAUTION:

If you have an SNC session open, terminate that session (with the CANC-USER:SNC command) before starting a pass-through session. An uplink user can have several pass-through sessions (with different NEs) open at once, but should not have an SNC session simultaneous with a pass-through session.

Create a pass-through session from the remote system as follows:

Step 1 Task

If necessary, establish a TCP/IP session to port 2025 of the NETSMART 1500 server using the same IP address (or host name) that NETSMART 1500 clients use. In the TCP/IP session, enter the ACT-USER command with the TID of the target NE and using your uplink user identifier (user ID) and password:
ACT-USER:TID:UID:CTAG::PID; TIDTarget identifier of the NE you want to have a pass-through session with UIDUser identifier (user ID) of your TL1 Uplink user/logon account CTAGCorrelation tag PIDPrivate identifier (password) of your TL1 Uplink user/logon account

Example: ACT-USER:FUJITSU:UID:CTAG::PID; The pass-through session is now established with the NE. You can now enter TL1 commands and receive autonomous TL1 messages as described in Section 3.2.1, Pass-Through Session Description [p. 3-6].

An SNC (subnetwork controller) session is a TL1 session (with the NETSMART 1500 EMS itself, rather than with an individual NE) that is intended to support network monitoring. It provides a mechanism for an upper-layer Network Management System (NMS) to connect to the NETSMART 1500 EMS and, through it, monitor the whole network of NEs that the NETSMART 1500 EMS manages. An uplink user should not have an SNC session simultaneous with a pass-through session.

TL1 Commands
If an uplink user (or NMS) establishes an SNC session, the NETSMART 1500 EMS supports the following TL1 commands:

ALW-SNCMSG INH-SNCMSG RTRV-HDR RTRV-SNCALM RTRV-SNCNE RTRV-SYS

For more information on these commands, refer to Section 3.4, TL1 Commands [p. 3-13].

Autonomous Messages
If an uplink user (or NMS) establishes an SNC session with the NETSMART 1500 EMS, autonomous messages from the whole network of NEs managed by the NETSMART 1500 EMS are generally forwarded to the uplink user (or NMS). The following are exceptions:

Messages REPT PM, REPT EVT FILE, REPT AUTO LOGOFF, and REPT DBCHG are never forwarded by TL1 uplink. If an alarm filter is associated with the uplink user account/logon, those messages are not forwarded. (Refer to Section 4.5.2, Associating an Alarm Filter with an Uplink User [p. 4-32].) The uplink user (or NMS) can allow and inhibit autonomous messages using the ALW-SNCMSG and INH-SNCMSG TL1 commands, respectively. These commands remain in effect for the duration of the SNC session. The TL1 uplink administrator provides an initial setting (ALW-SNCMSG or INH-SNCMSG) for each uplink user account/logon (refer to Section 4.2.1, Adding an Uplink User/Logon [p. 4-3]). The setting takes effect each time the user (or NMS) logs on to an NE, but the user (or NMS) can override the setting with the ALW-SNCMSG and INH-SNCMSG TL1 commands.

CHAPTER 5 SNMP Uplink Management Overview

5.1

Overview
The Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) Uplink is a separately licensed NETSMART 1500 component that provides SNMP based fault monitoring of NEs managed by the NETSMART 1500 Element Management System (EMS). SNMP Uplink Management (see Figure 5-2 [p. 5-12]) allows users with the SNMPUplink user function to administer the SNMP Uplink and manage access to the SNMP Uplink Server. This chapter describes SNMP Uplink Management and provides procedures for operating in the SNMP Uplink Management environment.

5.2

SNMP Uplink Terminology

Table 5-1 [p. 5-2] lists and describes the frequently used SNMP terminology.

A new server, SNMP Uplink, is included with the NETSMART 1500 EMS as part of the optional server group snmpuplink. The new server is disabled by default. The following sections provide information on configuring and starting the SNMP server.

5.3.1

Configure the SNMP Uplink Server

After the NETSMART 1500 EMS is installed on the NETSMART 1500 server, the NETSMART 1500 SNMP Uplink server (agent) must be configured. By default the agent is configured to listen for sessions on port 161. If you have other agents already running on the server, you must move those agents to another port or move the NETSMART 1500 SNMP Uplink server agent to another port1. Fujitsu recommends moving the agents to separate ports because of conflicts between the Sun Solaris installed agents (the Solstice Enterprise Agents Master Agent and DMI Mapper subagent) and the NETSMART 1500 agent.
Note: The NETSMART 1500 agent must be on a unique port number.

You can change the NETSMART 1500 agent or other agents, but these changes must be made before starting the NETSMART 1500 agent.
Note: The start-up scripts for the Sun Solstice agents are located in the /etc/rc3.d directory.

1 The

NETSMART 1500 agent session port is defined in the following file:

CHAPTER 5 SNMP Uplink Management Working with SNMP Uplink Management

Disabling an SNMP Manager causes the requests from the SNMP Manager to be dropped and authentication traps to be sent. Disabling a Trap Destination causes the listener to not receive any more traps. When the system starts up for the first time, a default manager profile with the name SYSTEM is created by the server. This profile accepts the requests from any SNMP Manager as long as the community string public is used. When a new SNMP Manager profile is added (whether the new profile is enabled or disabled), the SYSTEM profile is automatically removed. When the number of SNMP Manager profiles becomes zero, the SYSTEM profile is automatically created.

APPENDIX A TL1 Uplink Customization Overview

A.1

Overview
The NETSMART 1500 administrator can customize the TL1 Uplink feature by changing property values in the TL1UplinkServer.properties file. This appendix lists those parameters and their default values in Table A-1 [p. A-2].
Note: Refer to FNC-1500-0050-110, Server Administration Guide, for information on changing values in the TL1UplinkServer.properties file. Note: This practice assumes default values for the TL1UplinkServer.properties file. If values are changed to customize the TL1 Uplink feature, some aspects of the feature may not match the documentation.

A.2

TL1 Uplink Customization Properties

Table A-1 [p. A-2] lists and describes the parameters and default values in the TL1UplinkServer.properties file.
Table A-1: TL1 Uplink Customization Properties (1 of 2)

Parameter
default_instance_count disconnect_delay enable_pm_rept_events

Description
This parameter is the maximum number of communication sessions permitted in an uplink. This parameter is the delay before actual disconnect during an involuntary disconnect. The value of this parameter determines whether the PM REPT events received from the NEs will be relayed to a TL1 uplink session. Setting the parameter to true will enable this relaying. As the number of instances per enabled link grows, a warning is issued when a threshold of instances has been crossed. This parameter sets that threshold. This parameter is the maximum number of configured items the uplink supports. This parameter is the number of configured links that can be enabled at any one time. This parameter is the number of user configurations that are available. This parameter is the TID for the NETSMART 1500 Element Management System (EMS).

Default Setting
The default value is 10. The default value is 1 second. The default value is false.

instance_warning

The default value is 70 percent of default_instance_count. The default value is 40. This is the maximum number recommended. The default value is 20. This is the maximum number recommended. The default value is 100. This is the maximum number recommended. The default value is SNC.

APPENDIX A TL1 Uplink Customization TL1 Uplink Customization Properties

Table A-1: TL1 Uplink Customization Properties (2 of 2) Parameter

only_loggedin_nes

Description
The value of this parameter determines whether a user wants to see PM events only for those NEs that are logged in for that TL1 uplink session or for all NEs. Setting this value to true will ensure that only PM REPT events for logged in NEs are passed on. Setting it to false will relay PM events for all NEs. This is a comma separated list of TL1 uplink user IDs. A PM event will only be relayed to those TL1 uplink sessions in which an SNC logon (if any) is affected using one of these user ids. This is a comma-delimited list of TL1 commands that will be denied. This value represents the amount of time allowed to pass between the establishment of a communication session and the initial TL1 session. The value of this parameter indicates whether all faults or only unacknowledged faults are returned as response to the RTRV-SNCALM command. A value of 0 indicates all responses (including faults that are acknowledged in the NETSMART 1500 EMS). A value of 1 indicates that only unacknowledged faults are returned as part of the response. This is a comma-delimited list of TL1 commands that cannot be put in an access control list (ACL). This parameter is the port the uplink application listens to for connections from remote Network Management Systems.

Default Setting
The default value is false.
