The Immensity of the changes wrought and still to come cannot be underestimated says futurist Graham Molitor.

This miraculous information channel, the internet, will touch and alter virtually every facet of humanity, business, and all the rest of civilizations trappings.

Computers and communications. These are the two powerful wellsprings of the Information Age. From them arises a torrent of technology change. And the technology that makes this world became smaller. A long distance to find information had transformed and became very easy to solve any problem and to find any information needed at the world wide. If we look back a long time ago, if people are more than 50 feet apart, they are not likely to collaborate. That was the old so called 50-Foot Ruled stated. But modern communications and information technology has now given us global collaboration. The collaboration is only at your fingertips. Anyone can find any information their needed just by browsing the web. This is what we called the Internet. The Internet is a big topic to discuss and even bigger thing to learn. Its a combination of many pieces and parts, from email and the web to instant messaging and social networking. Even if we have master one piece of the puzzle, theres more out there to learn. The Internet has become an increasingly important feature of the learning environment as we look these days forward. Research by the Pew Internet & American Life Project in November and December 2000 shows that students especially teens use the Internet as an essential study aid outside the classroom and that the Internet increasingly has a place inside the classroom. The Project surveyed 754 online youth ages 12-17 and their parents. Teens and parents report that Internet is vital to completing school projects and has effectively replaced the library for a large number of online youth. 71% of students reported using the Internet at their primary source for their last major project, and they also reported accessing online study aids like Sparknotes or CliffNotes. Beyond legitimate assistance with studies via websites, or email or Instant message communication with teachers, students also take advantage of the Internet to cheat, with 18% of students reported knowing someone who used the Internet to do so. The introduction of internet to the education field has improved the quality of learning. Nobody could deny that it makes the lessons more interesting, while it is also more efficient for students to study online .Furthermore, it is general acquainted that using computer and internet access can help students learn more knowledge which they may not able to learn from

the lesson or books. The web has provided the users especially students with infinity information and knowledge that can be found in just a second. As we look back before this technology has invented, the knowledge level of students are less because lack of education tools. Students are only refer to the book as the most important and the only educational mechanism. But now after the Internet that was initially developed by Vinton Cerf, an American Computer Scientist as a part of a project sponsored by United State Department Of Defence Advanced Research Project Agency (ARPA) and directed by an American Engineer Robert Kahn. The developing of internet by ARPA began as a computer network that linked computer network at several universities and research laboratories in the United State. Even though the World Wide Web was only developed in 1989 by English Computer Scientist, Timothy Berners-Lee, the implementation of information technology in education has started at the beginning of its developing as we look at the history itself. With this infinity information that provide by internet, students will have more advantages and for sure their can improve their ability with so much knowledge could found in internet rather than only by a class lesson and reading a book. Obtaining an education online can have distinct advantages for the right student. First, being an online student allows them great flexibility with their schedules. Students can manage their daily time more efficiency according to the important tasks to be done. As the transformation of education system that needs students not only mastered curriculum or academic, furthermore students need to participate in co-curriculum activities provided by school, college or universities. As an example the launching of 1 Murid 1 Sukan by the Malaysian Minister of Education. This programmed need students to participate at least one of extra curriculum activity especially sport. Such as this programmed can make some students cannot manage their time well. This is why we see that internet are becoming a great advantage for students, online courses and infinity information allow students to check in at a time that works with their personal schedule. While assignments and tests can still have hard deadlines, online students can fit their schooling around their work and personal lives. World Wide Web or Internet nowadays can be found anywhere at any time. This make the benefit of online schooling is that it can be done anywhere Internet access is available. Students no need to spend a lot of time to find an access to internet and sitting half day at a library to find a reference to complete a assignment and any thesis. It can be found even at the restaurant or hanging around with friend. Student can sneak in time nearly anywhere to write a discussion board post, study or work on an assignment. This flexibility can be very helpful

for students or maybe to people who work full-time, are parents or travel frequently and want to continue their education. In the higher level of education in Malaysia, such as college or universities are now provided the broad way educational system that could help so much students that cannot effort to do or to attend a full-time courses. This another advantage of an online education includes not having to travel to a campus all the time to grab a scroll of diploma, degree or maybe higher. Students no longer have to move large distances to attend a college with a program that peaks their interest. This education system has performed a large number of degree holders without decrease the quality of the college or universities production. People who interested to further study are simply need an Internet connection and computer. This advantage can also benefit students with disabilities that make it difficult to travel. For some working adults who are thinking about advancing their education online should check with their employer to see if they offer any type of tuition reimbursement. Some employers encourage their employees to pursue higher education through online learning, as the classes can be attended from anywhere and the employee will not have to miss work. There are some potentials of detrimental effect of the internet use for education and an online education. Everybody knows that even though today technology give much transformation to educational system, but still the most important learning tools are from a lesson. The best educational terms at all are from the lesson from teacher or lecturer. Because education by lesson are the best way to prove our knowledge since we were trying to say a word until we not able to do so. So being as you work independently from your computer, there is less person-to-person interaction as you make your way through your courses. While many courses require discussion boards and posts to ensure students communicate with each other, it is not at the level of a traditional classroom. The implementation of internet for most of the education system will end up with students that not be able to have a good interpersonal communication skills. This is because student are spending much more time faces the computer monitor rather than meeting teachers, a group study and hang up with friends. Another area of the possible detrimental effect of an online education or student or teachers who used internet as the most important education tool is the availability of teacher or lecturer itself. With no physical hours to attend, it can be a bit challenging to pin down most teachers or lecturers when you need a question answered or have a concern about any course. This is the reality of education today. People are depending on internet to

communicate, to find information and even to buy a good for daily use. For students, they like to only send an email or massage rather that meeting people. One of the issues arises today is that student abuses to internet especially the world latest polemic, the social networking such as Facebook, Twitter, Tagged, Friendster and so on. According to the statistic, more than 50% of student in Malaysia are spending their time more on social networking than finding information. Even teens today access internet only to have a chat, to post a non-educational thought and to find friend that not sure if really exists. Facebook on internet now is like a spreading disease to the world society. Nearly 85 percent of college students log on to Facebook every day according to techrunch.com. The social networking site has become an addiction for many. Instead of students concentrating on their homework or studying for a big test the next day, they are spending hours looking through pictures, answering their page comments, and chatting with friends on the sites instant messenger. Facebook has consumed good grades and face-to-face communication is in jeopardy. According to Professor Swarndeep Gill of the CalU earth science department Facebook can be very distracting. He says that many of his students grades show how they get sucked into distractions such as Facebook and remain glued to their computers for hours. He is concerned that some students are spending too much time on the social networking site when they need to be focusing more on their homework. College is not easy and takes a great deal of focus, Gill said. There is little room for the distractions of Facebook when you want good grades.

Senior Allen Pines agrees that the site takes time away from his homework. He says that some of his grades reflect the little time he spends studying. Instead of finishing his work, he finds himself taking multiple breaks to visit Facebook. Doing my homework is important to me, Pines says. But I cant help getting caught up in the world of Facebook.

Internet has brought our education to the new level, and we can sayit as a world borderless education system. Instead of the negative effect of internet on students, there is many way to prevent this bad implication. One of the great implementation of technology is the safety of it. Safety on the Internet leads the way on the Con side of the Internet debate. Many parents and teachers are concerned about students accessing inappropriate and adult

material while online. Although firewalls and security settings will block most unsuitable websites, students adept with the Internet could get around these blocks and settings. Supervising a full classroom of students on the Internet may be impossible for a single teacher to handle. Many parents and teachers also have the concern that a student may get involved with online predators. Teaching online safety must be a requirement for all students who are involved in a class that provides Internet access to put parents at ease. Preventive approach should be taken both at home and at school. At home, parents should monitor their kids internet activities. As the internet has become a key requirement, prohibiting them from using the internet very inappropriate. However, monitoring is very effective measures to prevent the disanvantages of internet among kids at home .Beside that, the school also have to take action such as monitoring done by the teachers in charge, as the process of learning and teaching nowadays that use the internet as a very important tools. In addition, the values should also be applied in the minds of adolescents to prevent internet disadvantages on students from getting worse. In addition, limiting the use of the internet

is also an effective way to overcome this problem. Parents or teachers can take action by limited or restricted of the bad website visited by children. This preventional action can be done at home, at school, and in Cyber Cafe. This limiting action is one of the iniciative that we can use to avoiding moral damage of our students and also our teenagers. In addition, the restriction of the use of the Internet also can curb minors from doing activities that are not beneficial to our students. As we look around the web, there is plenty of software that we can use to prevent this problem. Use of Internet software that can block access to websites that very inappropriate. This is also one of the very efficient measures in order help us to monitor students. Use of this software should have known because it is one way to avoid the rise in internet misuse problems. This software should be used in institutions of higher learning and large offices. The software is able to block access to websites that are immoral. Here are some of the key findings from a survey of 754 of those youths by Pew Internet Project. From the survey, 87% of parents of online teens believe that the Internet helps students with their schoolwork and 93% believe the Internet helps students learn new things. Further more, 55% say the Internet has been a good thing for their children and only 6% say it has been a bad thing. Beside that, 38% say the Internet has no effect one way or the other on their children. The report also showed that 55% say it is essential for todays children to learn how to use the Internet in order to be successful and another 40% believe it is

important. For the communication, 28% of these parents have used email to communicate with their childrens teachers. Pew Internet Project also show that other relation related has 5% of adult Internet users have taken a class online for college credit. That amounts to more than 5 million people. Beside that, 53% of adult Internet users have gone online to do research for school or job training. On any given day 8% of adult Internet users are online doing research for school or job training. Further more, 52% of adult Internet users have done job-related research online. On a typical day, 16% of Internet users are online doing job-related research. About half of Internet users (more than 50 million people) have access to the Internet at work. From the good of our education today. Even though it has disadvantages or detrimental effects there is so many ways to prevent it. Everone should play a roll to make sure that our student or more important our children, our generations will not be abuse from the disadvantages of internet. ( 2,536 Words )
