. Holly Wolford Date: 4/8/13 Subject area / course / grade level: Speech/ 3rd grade Materials: Journals, Computer/Smart Board EQ & Standard: How can you tell someone else a story of a favorite experience in order of what happened?

1.2.3 relate an important life event or personal experience using simple sequencing
Lesson objective(s): Student can share a personal story with another in person or on paper in correct chronological order and only including highlights of the story. Differentiation strategies to meet diverse learner needs: Split students into groups and allow each to share events; have students journal their timeline of a specific event; bring in pictures and share events

ENGAGEMENT
Begin by showing a short video clip of teachers favorite experience/vacation spot. At end, explain what they saw and use simple sequencing to relate a day on vacation. Students take time to reflect on their own personal memories. Students should ask themselves if they have a favorite vacation, a memorable sporting event, or any other personal experience that they would like to share.

EXPLORATION
Students will be given a list of typical actions used while getting ready in the morning. They will be asked to put the list in the order in which the events occur to practice sequencing. Take a few minutes to brainstorm and jot down possible experiences that student wishes to share. Choose one to write about in a page-long journal. Include specific detail about events throughout the experience. Break into small groups and share journal with others. Switch groups and share a new experience in sequential order without journaling first. Which event occurred first, second, third, etc.? Why is it important to list events in a sequence? Is that detail necessary to convey the event to another?

EXPLANATION
Students will read back through their journals and recognize the sequencing they used. Teacher will explain why this is important. Teacher will try to tell a story or routine without sequencing events to illustrate possible confusion. Why is it important to put an event in simple sequential order? Would you understand your partners story if it was out of order? Is it necessary to include every small detail when relating a personal experience?

ELABORATION
By telling a few different stories to a partner or group, students will understand the best way to relate a life event to someone else. What vocabulary will be introduced and how will it connect to students observations? Chronological- putting the events in order is important when telling a story; Sequencing- students will understand the importance of putting events in the correct sequence when telling stories and listening to others Student will be able to tell personal stories in conversation in a way that others will be able to understand the sequence of events Student will be given extra credit opportunity to bring in pictures or souvenirs from their experience in order to make connections to their stories
