Day 1 5:04 Multiple people are texting and on the computer doing homework or killing time.

There are Groups of people ordering coffee at starbucks, which is entire discourse community in its self with its own individual set of artifacts, language, and different actors. Artifacts for the entire student union in general include bookbags, computers, coffee, food, earphones, uncc apparel, and student ids. 5:10 groups playing pool with friends and others hurrying to classes with food. Baristas making coffee (role) Groups of students socializing over coffee about apartments, classes etc. (Common ground which links them in their discourse community.) 5:15 the lines for food and starbucks grow longer as more students arrive after class. Artifacts used by students studying are cell phones, notebooks, and headphones. A general common rule in place is if a student is studying with headphones in they generally want to be left undisturbed and do not want to socialize. Students make the student union have a purpose all the operations revolve around their presence. Frats and sororitys have a discourse community which is present here they usually are in groups of other members/Greek with their own artifacts (letters, recruiting, etc). 520 a highly used artifact would be the elevator which has heavy traffic between employees and students going to study or eat. Basketball is an artifact carried by many passer bys (a) uncc apparel is commonly worn by many students 5:25 people talking/ordering /texting/typing/ using social media/studying Another discourse community would include all the different religious communities (different apparel/actions/head coverings/beleifs) 530 the later it gets the less populated the union is less studying more people here to eat. (information booth)-employees,maps,pamphlets exits chairs. The employees play a role when working which plays a part in the operation of the union.

Day 2 8:35 there is a lot less students studying most are here socializing or are here to eat dinner with friends. Artifacts at this later time are somewhat different such as wendys food, ipod, ipads, student ids, umbrellas. 8:40 athletes make up their discourse community with different clothing such as tennis shoes and basketball shorts. Many are carrying basketballs or wearing uniforms. Theyre generally sweaty and carrying athletic bags with them. Employees walking around observing and cleaning A lot less students present overall probably due to how much later it is. Coffee is still a major artifact almost everywhere you look you see someone drinking some. The most obvious community is the students who make up this figured world (Artifacts- school logos, ids, waiting, books, room keys, bookbags) Lots of people waiting, much calmer and more relaxed then the busy pace at earlier times of the day 8:50 people talking on phones People are collected into small groups, isolating themselves with their peers. Frat guys in blazers(artifact for their discourse community) at the atm(money) Empty book store with bored employees outtakes bags are an artifact used in the students discourse community its a means of grocery for on campus students. Guys dancing with girls yelling and laughing.

Day 3 500 Interview q1 why do you come to the student union? To study between classes I need background noise. Q2 how often do you come here?

Not often I dont come on campus much Q3 do you know a lot of people here? A few but not many. Q4 do you come here for just starbucks? No but a lot of friends do. 510 People waiting between classes( homework, computers, phones earphones big headphones ,bookbags, ipods) People playing pool (tables, balls, certain rules and skills) Students walking quickly to classes from the dorms. Most students present are ones that live on campus rather than commuters.( could they be a discourse community in themselves?) A lot of the same people hanging out and socializing in the same places as there were earlier in the week. Janitors playing their role in this community. (headphones, avoiding people, mops, trashcans) Employees hanging out after work ( keys, shirts nametags, eating) they change their discourse community and go from acting professional to just another student hanging out with friends relaxing. The trash system in the union is particular to this discourse community with three separate sections depending on types of trash based on the universities program. Random stranger hitting on girls.( using this facility as an opportunity to meet people.) 520 People studying ( usually quite, want to be left alone, books/computer) Athletes (matching warm-ups, basketballs, tall) Wendys line grows long as more students come for dinner.

Summary The figured world my group and I have chosen to observe is the Student union as our figured world. We decided to observe this location due to the large role it plays on our campus and the large amount of study body that utilizes it. This figured world has many purposes, it is used for dining, studying, hanging out, even as a path way for students headed to classes. Because it is accessable for our entire student body a wide variety of behaviors can be seen here, it isnt uncommon for this location to be loud in some areas as well as quite in others. It is typically understood that the union is for the use of UNCC Students. Many students use this as a meeting place or to socialized so it is quite common for there to be large group gathering and talking. You could expect almost any type of public behavior here is, however I feel it would be seen as very inappropriate for someone to be unusually loud on higher floors which are used to study or to be extremely affectionate or even for a non student/employee to be hanging out there. Because of our diverse student body and all the different opportunities present at union, many different types of discourse communities can be found there such as the food service staff, or the school employees, students, sports teams, the random break dancers and many others. I think one of the most prominent discourse community present here would be the Greek organizations on our campus because they make up such a large part of our school and a large percentage live on campus. The student union has a wide variety of uses and communities present here and they all have their own rules making behavior vary quite drastically.
