There are two broad groups in which culture can be placed. These are individualistic and collectivist ones.

How a person behaves is also determined by what type of culture that person was grew up in. In general terms individualistic culture promotes the independence of the people. Collectivist culture promotes the existence and importance of the group. The group has more preference than individual needs. The collectivist culture promotes interdependence. In collectivist culture people want to affiliate to a group or groups. The groups may be found at home, at the place of work or in the society. The people take the needs of the group as more important than that of the individual. People want peace and oneness in the group or society. They do not want confruntations to exist. Conformity is a key feature of the collectivists. Culturally, I am a collectivist. This is so because I was grew up in such a culture. At home we believe in the need for the extended families that give us emotional and material support. The family is an essential part of each one of us. In college we use committees of students to make decisions. There was a problem last week when we heard that 2 students planed the graduation party without consulting the rest of us. Decisions that come from a single person are questioned. The use of consultations which we use in college is a result of a collectivist culture. In my personal sense when I want to make decisions I also consult my trusted friends or the elderly people in my community or family. With the coming of the internet I also research from it. It is a personal need to consult other persons when i have an important decision to make. My college group is a colectivist one, but it has some exceptions because there is no group being purely colectivist or individualist. Generally, when we have homeworks, we must choose between individual and collective work. Most times we choose the second option because we were accustomed to the ease of working toghether. When we have something to present, we dont designate a representative. We divide the speach in a way that every member of the group is allowed to say something about the subject. This is another feature of collectivism. In our college group harmony prevails. We dont have disputes because serenity in our group is more important than individualistic argues. In our group coexists subgroups of friends who have intens communications and common activities. Our identity as students is influenced by other students, by teachers or other important persons who have contacts with us. For all of us, the degree we are about to take is the most important key because it is a condition in joining a bigger group: the public relations specialists group.
