(LEADER, ROKY OD 2004 DO 2009) Selected results VEGA 1/2036/05 - Landslide risk assessment in Slovakia (Martin Bednarik, 20052007) Methodical procedure of the landslide risk assessment consists of three main phases. The first phase is landslide hazard assessment using bivariate statistical analysis. Bivariate statistical analysis is based on the comparison between landslides inventory map as a dependent variable and all the input parametric maps separately. The second phase ground upon the vulnerability evaluation. Elements at risk were evaluated from their material vulnerability point of view. Only direct loss caused by landside hazard was calculated. The next logical step is a financial evaluation which is based on official prices set by the Slovak legislation. The map of landslide risk assessment, the last phase, represents likely financial loss caused by slope deformations, which are defined in the prognosis of a landslide hazard map. Two risk scenarios were compiled for the study area. The scenarios are presented in a form of crown pixel maps, each pixel has been attributed its own value of landslide risk.

Ministry of Environment SR, Project Nr. 1189 Engineering geological atlas of rocks in Slovakia (Rudolf Holzer, 2004 2007) The goal of the project and processing of the Engineering Geological Atlas of Rocks of Slovakia was to perform the basic characteristics of the rock mass and rock material in a simple and unified form. The uniform genetic-lithological classification of rock types founded on hierarchically different types and degree of homogeneity of rock masses and their physical state was considered as the most simplified scheme for the systematic classification and comparison of rock behaviour and properties. The summing of archive and actual knowledge and demands led to the final selection of 150 representative localities which represent the most extensive rock types in Slovakia and give a complex overview of the state and quality of the rock environment from the viewpoint of engineering geology. A record sheet consists of general information about locality, rock mass and rock material physical and mechanical characteristics and the efficiency of the deposit, as well. The direct connection of collected data to the needs of the practice (with the focus on the properties of the dimension stone and aggregate) and compilation of data in relational database enabled also the application within the GIS environment. The data collection in the form of the unified records follows the regulations of updated and new European standards requirements (STN-EN 14689-1). Project ASO Slovakia Austria Hungary - Czech Republic Types and causes of dimension stone damage of historic buildings under protection contribution of geological research to the maintenance of cultural heritage (Rudolf Holzer, 20062007) The main goal of the project was focused on the investigation of the building fond of the St. Martin`s Cathedral in Bratislava and the St. Michael Church in Vienna. Both structures are built up by easily workable Neogene sedimentary rocks, which had been exploited in the Vienna basin. For the accomplishment of the project goals following results were obtained: - Setting up of unified methodology of the qualitative and quantitative state assessment of the dimension stone on mentioned historic buildings. - Construction of the detailed faade plan of all 10 investigated fields of the St. Martin`s Cathedral in Bratislava and its georeferencing and vectorisation in GIS environment. - Determination of the lithological composition, typology of the conditions and causes of the deterioration of the dimension faade stone on both structures in Vienna and Bratislava. Recommendations on suitable replacement stone from quarries in Austria and Slovakia (with characteristics decisive for the replacement stone suitability) were realized, as well. - Confirmation that historic stone sources of medieval structures (faades of the church and burial place in Bad-Deutsch-Altenburg in Lower Austria) are also the ancient Roman amphitheatre and military camps in Carnuntum and Petronell. Samples from Carnuntum and Petronell were taken and their laboratory investigation focused on properties comparison with the stone on buildings in Bratislava is in progress. Action Austria-Slovakia, Project Nr. 54s3, Geological random conditions for biotechnical/soil bioengineering slope stabilization techniques and their sustainable development. A pilot study. (Renta Adamcov, 01.06.2006 28.02.2007) Application of bioengineering for erosion control and slope stabilisation is still mostly reduced to soil protection techniques in Slovakia (grass seeding, seed mats, erosion control nets...), while real ground stabilising techniques (live cuttings, fascines, wattle fences, layering...) and combined construction techniques (vegetated gabions, vegetated wooden crib walls etc.) can be seen at many sites in Austria, Italy, Switzerland etc. To learn more about the application rules and suitable geological conditions, some successfully stabilised sites have been visited and studied in Austria. Undisturbed rooted soil samples have been taken and tested in Slovak laboratories. They proved the contribution of the root system to the soil shear strength and thus the stabilising effect of the vegetation. Several bioengineering attempts have been found also in Slovakia. However, their revision by Austrian experts showed that some of them failed. Reasons

have been searched for and huge beginner-mistakes have been found and summarized. All visited sites have been documented; collected data and material will be used for an interactive educational CD about the bioengineering in the environment-friendly land stabilisation. International Programme on Landslides (IPL C101-2): Landslides monitoring at selected historic sites in Slovakia One of the scientific goals of the Project is to study effects of volume changes of the rocks due to daily and seasonal temperature changes and their effect on monitoring data in situ and in the laboratory. For this reason a three thermocouples at different depths were installed in the travertine cliff and automatically recorded data are stored in the data-logger since February 2003. Three thermocouples continually measuring the temperature at different depths (15, 50 and 80 cm) inside the rock mass were installed. In laboratory, on samples of cylindrical shape cut in three axis (x, y, z) three-thermo cycles corresponding to Central European condition were adopted. The laboratory results confirmed that the travertine from Spi Castle bedrock starts to change the volume within the 47 and 51C reaching the thermal dilation coefficient 0.3 mm/m. Surficial parts of the rock mass are influenced by daily, seasonal temperature fluctuations triggered by air temperature changes, insolation and wind cooling. Cyclic fluctuations are partly transmitted into rock mass according to Fourier law. The authors focused their attention to the study of thermal flow within the rock mass as well as on the study of those thermo-physical rock properties which are important from the view of thermo-mechanical rock behavior having an influence on rock mass loosening. The results gained during the study confirmed that the surface layer up to the depth of 80 cm is mostly thermally attacked and within it thermal dilation, thermal deformations and associated disintegration phenomena occur. Vol. 41, no. 3-4 (2007), p. 305-316. Application of local conditions in earthquake engineering is interconnected with the achievements in natural sciences like geology, seismology and geotechnical. Due to variation of soil conditions on the territory of Slovakia, the properties of response spectra and/or simulated recorded accelerograms should take these phenomena into account. The paper discusses the approach to the determination of shear wave velocities and soilstructure interaction. Possible application of latest records from new Slovak seismic station network is discussed, too.
