Recovering Microsoft Exchange 2003 Mailboxes with Auto Snapshot Manager


Purpose: Upon Completion of this lab exercise the student will be able use the Dell EqualLogic Auto-Snapshot Manager tool to create an Exchange Recovery Storage Group, and recover individual users mailbox items. Goals and tasks: Verify setup of a test Exchange 2007 Storage Group on the Dell EqualLogic SAN Use Auto-Snapshot Manager to create a Smart Copy (consistent snapshot) of the Storage Group View the snapshots from the Auto-Snapshot Manager User Interface Locate the snapshot on the Dell EqualLogic SAN Group Manager Simulate lost mail from users mailbox Create a Recovery Storage Group Use the Exchange System Manager to perform a merge operation the users mailbox Verify that the users mailbox has been restored Dismount the database and remove the Recovery Storage Group Unmount and Logoff from the Smart Copy Hardware and software requirements: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Verify setup of a test Exchange Storage Group on the Dell EqualLogic SAN 1. Open Group Manager for the PS Series SAN that supports the Exchange server. a. List the volumes that store the Exchange data: _____________________________________ _____________________________________ 2. Open the iSCSI initiator, and for each of the Exchange volumes perform the following: a. Select the Targets tab. Highlight the name of the volume, and select Details. b. In the Target Properties window, select the Devices tab, then select Advanced. c. In the Device Details window, view the Volume Path Name (drive letter) for the selected volume: _____________________________________ _____________________________________

d. Close the iSCSI initiator 3. Open the Exchange System Manager and perform the following: a. In the left hand panel, expand the Servers object, then select your server, then highlight the ASM-DEMO-EXCH-2003 mailgroup. b. Right-click on the mailgroup to view properties. In the properties window, select the ASM Demo storage group, and right-click to view properties. Record the paths for Logs and System files below Transaction Log Location:_____________________________________ System Path Location:_____________________________________ c. Highlight the database in the ASM Demo storage group (there should be only one). View properties for the database, and select the Database tab. Record the paths below: Exchange Database: ______________________________________ Exchange Streaming Database: ______________________________________ 4. Start Auto-Snapshot Manager and perform the following: a. In the left hand section, open Applications Microsoft Exchange Writer, select the Exchange Server, and highlight the SAN-based storage group. b. In the Properties area, confirm that the Host Volumes listed are the same as you observed in Step 3. II. Use Auto-Snapshot Manager to create a Smart Copy (consistent snapshot) of the Storage Group

1. In Auto-Snapshot Manager, highlight the Storage Group, and select Create Smart Copy Set from the context menu or Actions pane. a. In the Select Smart Copy Type window: i. Set Smart Copy Options to Snapshot ii. Leave Backup Type as copy iii. Enter comments if desired, and press Next.

b. In the Data Verification and Soft Recovery Options window: i. Select both Perform Checksum Verification and Perform Soft Recovery ii. Confirm Eseutil location iii. Set Perform Task to Immediately after smart copy creation c. Select Next to review the Summary screen, then select Create to make the Smart Copy

2. Verify that Checksum Verification and Soft Recovery are complete before continuing a. In ASM, select the Smart Copies master node, select the Exchange storage group, and highlight the smart copy that you just created b. View the Properties pane for the smart copy, and confirm that Soft Recovery and Checksum Verification have completed successfully. It will probably take a few minutes to complete. If necessary, periodically right-click Auto-Snapshot Manager in the left column and select refresh to update the properties screen. III. Simulate lost mail from users mailbox 1. Open a browser window and log in to webmail for user classuser2. a. In the address bar, open location https://serverc4/exchange/classuser2 b. Log in to the mailbox with these credentials: Username: classuser2 Password: eql 2. Delete some or all of the mail from the inbox. IV. Create a Recovery Storage Group 1. In Auto-Snapshot Manager, highlight the smart copy of the storage group. 2. From the context menu or the Actions pane, select Create Recovery Storage Group a. Read the notes on the initial screen, and select Next b. On the Select Exchange Storage Group window, highlight both the storage group and the mail store c. In the next two windows, select available drive letters for the new storage group d. In the Create A Recovery Storage Group window, review and follow the manual steps listed in the window: i. Open Exchange System Manager ii. Right-click on your Exchange server, and select New > Recovery Storage Group iii. In the Recovery Storage Group Properties window, use the browse buttons to browse to the drive specified in the manual steps, create a new directory called RSG, and place both the transaction logs and the system paths in that directory. iv. In Exchange System Manager, you should now see the Recovery Storage Group listed under your server. Right-click on the RSG, and select Add Database to Recover (the database/mailstore to recover is specified in the manual steps). Add the database now, but do NOT mount it.

v. Return to the ASM Create Recovery Storage Group window, and select the checkbox I have performed the above steps. vi. Next to the empty field labeled Provide the Recovery Storage Group Location, press the ellipses () button and navigate to the folder that you specified in step 2.d.iii above. vii. Press Next to complete the Create Recovery Storage Group process. Press Finish on the last screen. e. Return to the Exchange System Manager window. f. Highlight the database located in the Recovery Storage Group. Right-click on the database and select Mount Store. Verify that it mounts successfully.

g. Right-click again on the database, and select Refresh. You should see two new objects under the database: Logons and Mailboxes. V. Use Exchange System Manager to perform a merge operation the users mailbox 1. Select the Mailboxes object in the RSG database. 2. In the list of mailboxes, right-click on class user2, and select Exchange Tasks. 3. When the Exchange Tasks Wizard appears, press Next to see the list of available tasks. In our case, there is only one available task, Recover Mailbox Data, which is already highlighted. Select Next to continue 4. Review the information on the Recover Mailbox Data screen, and press Next to continue. Select Merge Data as the recovery method, and press Next again. Review the task schedule, press Next and then press Finish on the last screen. 5. Return to Class User2s mailbox, and confirm that the missing mail items have been restored. VI. Dismount the database and remove the Recovery Storage Group 1. In Exchange System Manager, right-click on the RSG database, and select Dismount Store. 2. Once the database is dismounted, right-click again on the database, and delete the database. 3. Right-click the Recovery Storage Group, and delete it from your server. VII. Unmount and Logoff from the Smart Copy 1. In Auto-Snapshot Manager, observe that the Smart Copy that was used to create the RSG has an i overlaid on its icon. 2. Right-click on the Smart Copy and select Unmount and Logoff. Confirm that the operation completes normally. Lab # 6b is completed
