Logos
February 23rd, 2013

Objectives: Programs:

Creating a variety of logos to fit a company or personal image Using the basic tools of Illustrator Adobe Illustrator

Description:

These are logos I created for an actual online bookstore company. I wanted to create logos that were simple yet eye-catching. I used the light-bulb because of its common use as a symbol of inspiration.

Process:

The whole process was full of deleting, moving, changing, and starting over. But in the end, in my first logo I used two different fonts, sizes, colors for the 2 and the inspire. Bringing in a yellow circle for the background, I changed the opacity to 50% and the brush definition to filbert, to give it a lighter edge to it. For my second logo, I typed out the words 2, i, and then nspire in seperate text boxes. I changed the font size of the 2 and the i to make them bigger, and to allow the i to make the length of the p in nspire. Then I placed a yellow circle on top of the dot and curled wires inside using the pen tool to create a light-bulb. As for my third logo, I brought in a picture of a light-blub, traced it, and added the curly-cues on the end as wiring for the light-bulb. Then, changed the light-bulb to an orange fill with a black outline. I typed in the name 2inspire out next to it, making the 2 stand out more by sizing it a little bit bigger. Event Ad
January 31st, 2013

Objectives:

Finding, scanning, and importing a high-quality image Creating a full-bleed design Using text boxes for layout in Word Inserting and editing images in Word

Programs:

Microsoft Word Epson Scanner pdf2jgp.net (PDF converter)

Description:

This Event Ad was an Ad I created for a fundrasier and sponsor of my choice, as if I was given this project by my employer with low funds and limited resources, using only Microsoft Word. The fundrasier and sponsor are ficititous.

Process:

After finding and scanning my image, I inserted it within my document and gave it a white border to give it a look of an actual photo. I then inserted the blocks of color, filling them with the green and blue from his attire. For the background color I used the color of the sky from the image. By using the shapes, I gave the Ad a more juvenile feel, using the red, yellow, and green, again, from his attire. I then added the text: the title, the subtitle, date, time, place, age range, cost, description, the sponsor, and where the proceeds will go to along the blue and green strips of color. Web Page
March 16th, 2013

Objectives:

Sizing and optimizing an original logo as a .png for a web page Writing content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it appeals to a target audience Designing a web page using HTML to display the logo and content Acquring a working knowledge of HTML and basic understanding of CSS Identifying hex colors for web design Compressing multiple files in a zipped folder to attach as one file

Programs:

Text Wrangler Adobe Photoshop

Description: Process:

I created a web page using HTML for my text and CSS for my design to describe one of the logos I created. First, I created a text of 234 words, inserted it into HTML format used TextWrangler; adding links, bullets, my logo where needed. After linking my HTML to my CSS, I changed the colors of my borders, backgrounds, text, and links, using the eyedropper tool in Photoshop to match my logo. I changed to the Cambria font, changed my font sizes, and placed a bold around the last line of my text. Finding a free gray striped image on google.com and changing the sizing on Photoshop, I placed the image as my background. I then focused on my padding, arranging my text, bullets, and images into the positions I wanted them. That also included changing the padding to curve the top two corners of my box, and left the bottom corners squared. Comm 130 - Visual Media Eric Lybbert

Brochure
March 30th, 2013

Objectives:

Setting up and aligning a two-sided, folded document Creating an original company logo and using it in a brochure Incorporating quality images

Programs:

Adobe InDesign Adobe Illustrator Adobe Photoshop

Description:

I made this informative brochure about the annual 4th of July event for the small town of Kelly, Idaho. The town and the peoples names involved are fictitious.

Process:

I came up with my design, searched the web, and found five free images I wanted to use. After setting up my alignment in InDesign for a tri-fold two-sided brochure, I began to place my images, editing, extending, and flipping them as needed using Photoshop and InDesign. I placed the watermelon image on the front, shortening the flap to give it an envelope look. Using the pen tool, I created blocks of color, curving the edges where I wanted. With the pathfinder, I cut my blanket image to create a border around the curved edges. I created a bite using the pen tool and placed multiple bites along the edges to make it look like someone had bited into the watermelon. I also placed a text wrap along those bites so no text would enter in those areas. I placed my text within my brochure and used a text wrap to wrap around curved borders. I created a logo for the event in Illustrator by typing out Fourth of July, picking a font, making it an outline, and began manipulating it how I wanted. After canceling out the fill and leaving a border, I placed 23rd annual and Celebration before and after, and placed it on the front of my brochure. Comm 130 - Visual Media Eric Lybbert

Imaging
February 8th, 2013

Objectives:

Learning basic photography skills Using a digital camera to take a quality image, then downloading it Sizing and croping the image Adjusting image brightness, contrast, hue, and saturation levels Using the selection tool to isolate a portion of the image Desaturating a selected portion of the iamge Using a filer or colorizing a portion of the image

Programs:

Nikon Camera Adobe Photoshop

Description: Process:

This is Kara Laney, a roommate of mine. I took this picture of her and edited, saturated, used a filter, and more to make it look as it does now. After taking the photo, I brought it into Photoshop. I fixed the levels of the photo, made it black and white, cropped it as a 6x6, and gave it more brightness and contrast. I selected the umbrella first, colorized and saturated for more of a darker red color, and feathered and smoothed the mask to give it more gentle transition. Selecting the background, I saturated and added the Crosshatch filter to it. I then selected, saturated, and gave her even more contrast. Comm 130 - Visual Media Eric Lybbert

Objectives:

Creating a new logo to fit a company or personal image Designing consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead Using the basic tools of Illustrator and InDesign

Programs:

Adobe Illustrator Adobe InDesign

Description:

This business card is for the interior design company called Emery Design. I created the logo and the format of this design. The company and name information are fictitious.

Process:

I created my business card in Illustrator. For the front of the card, I used different shades of blue to create a paint color palette for part of the background. My logo was made by tracing a lamp image and using different fonts, sizes, and colors for the title. I placed my logo in the bottom left-hand corner over the lines of color. The contact information was placed in the top right-hand corner, bolding the most important information like their name, title, and phone number for contrast. As for the back of the card, I used a larger version of the the color palette for the entire background and enlarged my logo, using different colors so it could more easily be read. Adobe Illustrator Adobe InDesign

Description:

This letterhead was created to match the previous business card design for the interior design company of Emery Design. The company and name information are fictitious.

Process:

I created my letterhead in InDesign. I placed my logo in the top corner, using different colors again so it could more easily be read. I used my color palette as lines for the top and bottom of my page, and the same background color in my business card as my background in my letterhead. The name and title were placed to look like a continuation of the top line, and the address, phone number, and email were placed equally apart below the bottom line. The name, title, and every other piece of information below was bolded for more contrast. I enlarged the lamp in my logo to be used as a watermark. Comm 130 - Visual Media Eric Lybbert

Flier
January 26th, 2013

Objectives:

Applying the design principles and using appropriate typography Incorporating basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout Retrieving image and logo from links Creating a project folder with image, logo, and InDesign documents to keep links intact

Programs:

Adobe InDesign

Description:

This is a flier I created for an upcoming event a company called Vouant Communications was putting on. I need to create something that was in grayscale and eye-catching and appealing to my audience. The company and event are ficititious.

Process:

First, I sketched out a few of my ideas and chose one that I thought was the best. Bringing in some different shades of gray and a big font, I created a title at the top of the page. My photo was brought in and I feathered it using the gradient tool to lead into my text. I enlarged the size of my date, place, and time to stand out so it could be more easily found, and placed the website information on top of a black line below to match the title above. Lastly, I placed the logo above the black line and aligned it with the text. Comm 130 - Visual Media Eric Lybbert

Montage
February 14th, 2013

Objectives:

Learning to manage Photoshop layers Learning to blend images together smoothly, using masks Using filters Applying appropriate typography

Programs:

Adobe Photoshop

Description: Process:

I created this inspiration montage by blending two images and using a quote by Dr. Seuss. First, I found the quote and the two pictures I wanted to use. Placing my picture of the older couple as the background, I flipped the image. Using a content-aware fill and the healing brush in Photoshop, I extending the image so I could place the couple further down where I wanted them. In the leafed-hear image, selected the leaf and deleted the background of the image and filled it in with a dark brown color. I blended those pictures together for a more smooth transition between the two. I then placed the text, making the three words love reality and dreams larger and in a script font. I made the words love and reality an autumn red color to convey the idea that love is real, not of the imagination. I placed a small drop shadow on the words so it could be more easily read. I also used an small dark red overlay effect on the leaf. Comm 130 - Visual Media Eric Lybbert
