Gospel (John 20:26-31)
Now a week later his disciples were
again inside and Thomas was with them.
Jesus came, although the doors were
locked, and stood in their midst and
said, "Peace be with you." Then he said
to Thomas, "Put your finger here and
see my hands, and bring your hand and
put it into my side, and do not be
unbelieving, but believe." Thomas
answered and said to him, "My Lord and
my God!" Jesus said to him, "Have you
come to believe because you have seen
me? Blessed are those who have not
seen and have believed." Now Jesus did
many other signs in the presence of (his)
disciples that are not written in this
book. But these are written that you
may (come to) believe that Jesus is the
Messiah, the Son of God, and that
through this belief you may have life in
his name.
This is the truth. Peace be with you.
A reading from the Second Letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to The
Corinthians (5,11-21) Your blessing father,
Brothers and sisters,
Therefore, since we know the fear of the Lord, we try to persuade others; but we are
clearly apparent to God, and I hope we are also apparent to your consciousness. We
are not commending ourselves to you again but giving you an opportunity to boast of
us, so that you may have something to say to those who boast of external appearance
rather than of the heart For if we are out of our minds, it is for God; if we are rational, it
is for you. For the love of Christ impels us, once we have come to the conviction that
one died for all; therefore, all have died. He indeed died for all, so that those who live
might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised.
Consequently, from now on we regard no one according to the flesh; even if we once
knew Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know him so no longer So whoever is
in Christ is a new creation: the old things have passed away; behold, new things have
come. And all this is from God, who has reconciled us to himself through Christ and
given us the ministry of reconciliation, namely, God was reconciling the world to
himself in Christ, not counting their trespasses against them and entrusting to us the
message of reconciliation. So we are ambassadors for Christ, as if God were
appealing through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For
our sake he made him to be sin who did not know sin, so that we might become the
righteousness of God in him.
Praise be to God always.

MEDITATION
Thomas was not with the company of apostles when Jesus first appeared
to them, showing them his wounds and calling them to be his emissaries to the
world.
When his fellow apostles shared the incredible news with Thomas, he
was unconvinced: Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my
finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe. To us,
Thomas incredulity strikes us as completely normal; we probably would not have
acted much differently!
Thomas was not present with the other disciples when Jesus gave the
Spirit (John 20:24). Thus he could grasp neither the truth of the risen Lord nor the
testimony of the others who witnessed to the truth of Jesus risen in glory. In the
Christian faith community, we are meant to find the support, encouragement and
truthfulness to sustain us on times of trial, tribulation, doubt and confusion. This
was not the case with Thomas, who without the guiding inner light of the Holy
Spirit resisted the witness of the other disciples.
When Jesus appeared a second time to his disciples, Thomas was
among them. Jesus admonished him for his failure to believe the testimony of
other witnesses and proclaimed the blessedness of those who believe in the
future, based on the testimony of others who had seen. Thomas now had
received the Spirit, as indicated by his proclamation of Jesus as My Lord and my
God (John 20:28), a declaration which is a complete expression of faith in Jesus
as divine Son of God.
We too have received the gift of the Holy Spirit. We too have been
blessed with a faith community of brothers and sisters in our churches and
fellowships. And we have received the testimony of a cloud of witnesses
stretching all the way back to the time of the disciples. Do we see Jesus as
risen in glory? Can we confess him as our Lord and God.
