Working with the text files


Creating a new word document:
Office button , NEW command (blank document or using templates)

Opening of a file
Office button , Open command.

Viewing modes:
Outline the document is displayed having the first paragraph lines marked-up; Print Layout the document is displayed having page numbering, header and footers in the printing layout; Web Layout the document is displayed like using a web browser; Full screen reading the document is displayed full-screen without the bars;

Draft, the document is displayed draft way.

Saving a document:
Office button , Save as...

Closing the current file


Office button Typing the text: using the keyboard (input device); the usage of Enter key is done at the end of the paragraph; to move to the next line (in a paragraph) Shift+Enter key combination Editing Capital letters (Caps Lock key On, or Shift+text key) Text Alignment - using specified buttons Text Effects (bold, italic, underline) , Close

A paragraph means a text area typed between the twice usage of Enter key. Accesing different areas in the document:

mouse clicks inside the document; using the scroll bars; using the keyboard: the arrow keys and key combinations Alt, Ctrl, Page Up, Page Down, End, Home: one line up; one line down; one character to the right; one character to the left;

Ctrl + one word to the right; Ctrl + one word to the left; Ctrl + one paragraph up; Ctrl + one paragraph down; End the end of the current line; Home the begining of the current line; Page Up one page up; Page Down one page down; Ctrl + Page Up the begining of the current screen; Ctrl + Page Down the end of the current screen; Alt + Ctrl + Page Up the begining of the previous page; Alt + Ctrl + Page Down the begining of the next page; Ctrl + End the end of the current document; Ctrl + Home the begining of the current document.

Selecting the text


Mouse techniques:

Selecting a word, double click the word; Selecting a text line 3 clicks on the black line in the right margin; Selecting a paragraph, 3 clicks in the paragraph.

Selecting all the text Select All or Ctrl+A.

Moving and copying the text


The moving (copying) the text, consists: Selecting the text; Home/Clipboard Cut (Copy); Accesing the wanted area (move or copy to); Home/Clipboard Paste.

Finding and replacing text fragments


Home/ Editing Find &Replace section.

Editing Capital letters and case changings


Caps Lock, Shift+text Home/Font, Change Case.

Inserting special characters


-Different keyboards: English US, UK, French, German, Romanian... - Insert/Symbols, Symbol (More symbols...). Font: (normal text), Subset: Basic Latin. Assigning key combinations

Working with two or more files at the same time


View/Window, Arrange All.

Text formatting can be performed at 3 levels


Document level: format of the page , the margins, eventually headers and footers

Paragraph level: the characterictics of a paragraph: the aligment, line spacing, , indentation (the distance between the text lines and the margins); Character level: font type, size, style, text effects, character spacing.

Document formatting

Page Layout, Page Setup Paper size= physical size of the paper (includes logical size and the margins) -logical page = the area where effectivelly type the text (except the margins) Page Orientation (Orientation - landscape, portrait), Mirror Margins used if the document is printed on both sides of the paper. Different types of documents (one type of page, two types of page: left & right): - (Odd page) placed to the right side - (Even page) placed to the left side - (Paper Size: A3, A4, A5, B5, letter... - (Header /Footer) Paragraph level - alignment of the text , line spacing, text indentation. Align (left, right, center, justify) Format/paragraph (Indents & spacing):

Indentation the distance between the text lines and the margins
There are 3 indentation categories: (Right), the text will be placed to the interior from the right side (Left), the text will be placed to the interior from the left side (Special), with the options: o None all the lines will use the distance specified in the Left field o First line only the first line will be indented using the specified value in the By field, plus the specified value in Left field. o Hanging all the lines (except the 1rst one ) are intended to the specified value in By field.

Line spacing (the space between the paragraph lines): single, 1.5, double,exactly, at least or multiple, using At field . Line and page breaks Widow/Orphan control the paragraph cannot have one line on one page and the rest of the lines on the next page Keep lines together the paragraph will be placed on one page and it cannot be split up Keep with next the paragraph will be placed on the same page with the next paragraph Page break before the paragraph will be placed on the next page Supress line number Dont hyphenate

Character formatting:

Font; Size; Font Style; Effects; Character Spacing.

Home, Font A font = a character and symbol set, having the same typeface design. A font is described by the symbol set, spacing, pitch, point size, style and type face family. Size. Font Style: Regular, Bold, Italic, Underline Text Effects.

Special text editing methods Inserting breaks and or defining text sections
Page Layout, Page Setup, Breaks Break (section) = a continous area in the document that can pe formatted in a separate way compared to the rest of the document (and other sections). Next Page new section on the next page Continuous new section on the current page Even Page new section on the first even page Odd Page new section on the first odd page.

Column editing:
Format | Columns: The user can specify: Number of columns Width and spacing Spacing Interrupting the column editing: Insert | Break and then Column Break. Ctrl + Shift + Enter. Format | Colums and Start New Column. Or choosing Page Layout, Page Setup, Columns and One column..

Creating Bulleted & numbered lists:


Home, Paragraph

Bulleted, Numbered, Outline numbered.

Format | Bullets and Numbering. Using the Enter, TAB, Backspace. Example: Counties and cities: 1. Cluj County: 1.1. Cluj-Napoca 1.2. Dej 1.3. Huedin
