Recently, Mrs. Slowey and I had the opportunity visit classrooms and award honour roll certificates to eighty -seven of our students. The VAPS honour roll recognizes students who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement during the course of the year, and on behalf of the entire school community, we would like to offer congratulations to these very deserving students. Well done! Also, we would like to extend good luck and best wishes to our students who will be taking part in the United Counties Science Fair on Saturday, April 6th, at St. Lawrence Secondary School. School Council Update: Our next School Council meeting will be held on Monday, June 3rd at 6:00pm in the Learning Common (formerly our school library). All are welcome to attend! Chocolate Bar Fundraising Campaign: Our annual chocolate bar fundraising campaign is set to begin on Monday, April 8th and will run until Wednesday, April 17th. An information/ permission letter has already been sent home, and we are offering great prizes for students who choose to take part. Out top -seller prize this year will be an Apple iPad Mini. Funds raised this year will be devoted to technology acquisition, in the form of a second iPad cart for use in our school. School Travel Planning , Walk 2 School Wednesdays, and School Trips to the Benson Centre: Did you know...

since 1960, the rate of children walking/biking to school has decreased from close to 60% to less than 30%? one car in five travels less than one kilometre during the morning commute to school? over the past 30 years, obesity rates have tripled, and one in four children/youth are either overweight or obese?

The correlation between less-active lifestyles and childhood obesity is undeniable! Our school was recently selected as a Our bike rack looks awfully pilot site for The School Travel Planning Program, which promotes healthy, active lifestyles, beginning with encouraging lonely! students and their families to consider alternate, active ways of getting to school, such as walking, biking, rollerblading, and skateboarding. Our school has also developed a partnership with the Benson Centre, and to celebrate our commitment to healthy, active lifestyles, we have designated four days between now and the end of the school year as Walk 2 School Wednesdays. On these days, the entire school will also be visiting the Benson Centre Field House for one hour of physical activity! The dates that have been selected are: April 17th, May 1st, 8th, and 15th. Fit2Dance Workshops: We are thrilled to welcome Fit2Dance to our school on Tuesday, April 16th. Our students in JK-6 will be participating in either the G.R.O.O.V.E. or Groovin Kids workshops. These programs will address components of the dance, health and physical education curriculum, as well as character education and bullying prevention. A permission form was sent home earlier this month and must be returned, in order for students to take part. Kindergarten Pre-Registration: 2013-2014: Junior and Senior Kindergarten pre-registration is now open for 2013-2014. The on-line registration link for NEW students only can be accessed by visiting: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/Registration_2012 Please be aware that the following documentation is mandatory, before the start of school in the fall: 1) proof of age (e.g. birth or baptismal certificate), 2) proof of immunization, 3) a valid health card. EQAO Provincial Testing Parents and guardians of students in grade 3 and 6 are reminded that this years EQAO testing will take place between May 22nd -June 7th. In order to promote student success, it is very helpful if parents and guardians avoid any planned absences (e.g. appointments) during the testing period. Lost and Found: Items in our lost and found box will be on display shortly. Please encourage your child to search for any items that may have been lost over the winter months, as all unclaimed items will be donated to charity on Monday, April 15th.
