Destiny Warner Guided Reading 03-08-2013 Group 1: (high) Focus: Reading more difficult text and pushing our

abilities. Essential Question: Compare and contrast modern Iowans with the Lakota Native American tribe from 200 years ago. Thursday Materials: Buffalo Before Breakfast by Mary Pope Osborne. Today we are going to finish Buffalo Before Breakfast. I want you all to read the text and then we will discuss your thoughts on the book. If you have any final things you would like to add to your Venn Diagrams, today is the day you should do that. As they read, listen to individual students and support their reading as needed. If students finish with the selected pages they should go back into the text and reread. Ask students their thoughts on the book. Follow their thinking and ask openended questions. Encourage them to talk to each other about the text instead of just the teacher.

Group 2: (low) Focus: Use the main ideas and details along with the infer/predict strategy to gain understanding of the text. Friday Materials: Penguins by Alan Wood Today we are going to finish Penguins by Alan Wood. Lets write down what we know about penguins so far. Page 10: Point out the chart and show how it tells us a lot of information in a way thats easier to read than a paragraph. What information does each part of this chart tell us? As students read, observe and guide as needed. Use language that supports their understanding. The chart gives more information about penguins than we might have had. It tells us that Penguins live around the world. What are some other details that we

can add about where penguins live? Remember the map on page 5 if you need to check for details.

Group 3: (on level 1) Focus: Use main ideas and details along with the infer/predict strategy to gain understanding of the text. Friday Materials: - Antarctic Animals by Erik Barneveld - Paper - Pencils This week we learned a great deal about Antarctica and the people who work there. Today we are going to read more about some of the animals that live there. If you look through the book you will see headings with the topic for the pages and you will also see our vocabulary words highlighted. Instruct the students to read the whole text. As they read, listen to individual students and support their reading as needed. If students finish with the selected pages they should go back into the text and reread about their favorite animal in this book. After reading, discuss the students favorite pages and animals. Instruct students to write a topic statement with details.

Group 4: (on level 2) Focus: Use main ideas and details along with the infer/predict strategy to gain understanding of the text. Friday Materials:

- Exploring Antarctica by Lisa Benjamin pages 10-14. - Paper - Pencils

Today we are going to continue reading Exploring Antarctica by Lisa Benjamin. Tell me some of the main ideas weve talked about so

far. Why do people want to explore the coldest place on Earth? Do you think they were brave or foolish to go to Antarctica? Page 10-11: Waterproof. Point out more historical photos of ships and explorers. Page 12-13: Modern pictures of the locations. Page 14: The timeline shows the sequence of events that took place in Antarctica. What year the the first event take place? The last? As they read, listen to individual students and support their reading as needed. If students finish with the selected pages they should go back into the text and reread the pages. Respond to the text with the students by doing the activity on page 15 of the text. Discuss main ideas and details. Encourage students to go back into the text to support their answers.
