TSG has been working very hard this
semester on many different projects and
initiatives focused on enhancing the
University and your overall Temple
experience. As Vice President of
External Affairs, my duties require me to
be the liaison between the student body
and administration as well as the liaison
between the student body and the
community.
This semester, one of my main focuses
will be on the relationship between
Temple students living off campus and
the local community residents. There
have been many issues surrounding off-
campus living this past year and I hope to
tackle those problems with the help of
Campus Safety. I have scheduled a series
of town hall meetings, the first being on
March 18th, 2009 in room 200b from
7:30 to 9:00 pm. The main goal of these
meetings will be to bridge the gap
between the students and the local
residents in hopes of fostering a greater
sense of community and respect.
The month of March also is the kick off
to “Just Cause” month! I highly
encourage everyone to participate in the
various events that will be going on
around campus. It will be a very exciting
month, so join a cause, start your own
or simply spread the word about the
different events we have planned!

This semester I have been working on
three projects. First, I am continuing the
flag proposal from last year. The flag
proposal is a project to put install flags of
the 160 countries from which the Temple
Student Body is represented. Each year
there will be 40 flags put up in the student
center atrium, and the flags will be changed
every year for four years, therefore a
student will be able to see all 160 flags in a
college career. The second project that I
am working on is proving a weekly bus
service from campus to South Philadelphia
for students to do grocery shopping. The
buses take students from the Student
Center to Mifflin St, where Target,
ShopRite and Marshall are located. The
last service, which has already happened,
was the Housing and Financial Aid Forum.
The forum provided the students a
resource to talk to landlords about
housing and what to look for in off campus
housing. While the financial aid forum
provided students a resource to help
complete the FAFSA as well as to gather
information about the many types of loans
available to them. Currently, I am hoping
to complete the flag proposal by the end
of the semester and continue the bus
service until the end of the semester.

Senate President
The Senate is working to tackle issues
of the individual schools/colleges and
the University as a whole. Right off the
bat the Senate formed an ad-hoc
committee that is continuing its
investigation into academic advising.
Another early project was to bring a
bike share service to the University.
Towards the end of the semester the
senate heard from representatives of
TAUP, AFSCME, and Temple University
to determine whether or not support
would be formally given to those
unions. At the start of the second
semester the senate is working to take
on wide scale allocations/appropriations
reform. They are also working to aid
students affected by the Yorktown
situation, making a series of campus
safety videos, tabling within their
schools, and working to appoint the
most qualified people to lead the
student body.

Each day we are challenged to do more and the “Just
Cause” Campaign is designed to encourage students to
want to do more and to do more. It’s amazing the
difference one action can make. If we can start now,
build that involvement, and build community, imagine
the world that we could create.

This year has been an exciting one
with a number of projects. My
biggest one is "Just Cause" month
which is a joint effort with Main
Campus Program Board to promote
philanthropy and community service
throughout the university. It is
focused on the student
organizations and we're hoping that
it will encourage other students to
get involved as well.
We are also working to help
celebrate the 125th Anniversary of
Temple. Our historian Jarae Hines is
putting together a Temple Creed,
which is something that the entire
university campus will be able to
identify with. We want to help
create an identity for all Temple
Owls, and we're hoping this is the
first step towards achieving that.
Most recently, we teamed up with
the Penn State Student Government
to oppose Governor Ed Rendell's
Tuition Relief Act, which would
in tuition aid if your family's
income was less than $100,000.
However, Temple University,
Penn State, Lincoln University,
and University of Pittsburgh were
excluded from this plan because
we're state-affiliated universities
rather than state schools. We had
a rally and sent out petitions to the
Governor and to state officials to
ask them to reconsider and give
our students financial aid.
TSG has been working hard and is
at the forefront of working on
student issues. We continue to
work on the issues that are
pressing to the Temple Student
body.

Other directing credits include: Jesus
Christ Superstar; I Love You, You’re
Perfect, Now Change; Sweeney Todd;
and Waiting for Lefty. As an actor
Fabio recently completed the roles of
“Mr. Tesh” in Nikolai Gogol's The
Gamblers with the Cleveland Museum
of Art as part of their Viva and Gala
series and Thenardier in the Broadway
national tour of Les Miserables. Other
national credits include Missionaries at
Brooklyn Academy of Music, directed
by Elizabeth Swados and starring Josie
DeGuzman; “Ludovico Marsili” in the
U.S. premiere of David Hare’s
adaptation of Brecht’s The Life of
Galileo; Festival, and the U.S. premiere
of Domino Heart. Fabio has also made
numerous network television and
radio appearances, including roles on
“Guiding Light” and “As the World
Turns.” He received his MFA in
Acting from Case Western Reserve
University and his BA in Sociology
from Temple University.
TSG History Update
February 1963
In late February, the Student council really got to work on a resolution
that opposed the Temple University Law School “no work” ruling that
seemed to work against the students. The council invited the Law Dean
Benjamin Boyer to meeting to hear the four main points of opposition
presented by the students.
“1.) It was passed without proper consultation. 2.) It puts the
blame for a poor record on the student without considering
the possibility that the quality of instruction might be a
contributing factor. 3.) It works a hardship on male students
who may lose draft exemption. 4.) It applies standards to
students which are not applied to faculty, many of whom hold
outside jobs.”
The resolution was one of the first times the council dealt with an issue
“it really does not have anything to do with.” This motion was believed
to set a precedent for Temple Student Council and went a long way in
improving its status on campus.
January - February Recap
After a well-deserved break TSG
got right back to work during it’s
first state of the campus for 2009.
It featured a guest speaker,
Anthony Wagner the Chief
Financial Officer, who fielded
several students’ questions ranging
from the recession’s effect on
Temple to budget cuts.
In February, it seemed finances were still the
theme. TSG sponsored and hosted a rally at the Bell Tower
opposing Governor Ed Rendell’s proposed Tuition Relief Act that
left Temple out of the equation. Penn State’s Student Government
and several local media outlets were in attendance.
