Introduction

Micro-hydels, in which water from a river tributary or water springs is diverted into a channel and is brought down through a pressure pipe to run a generator for producing electricity, are set up in the off-grid mountainous areas. Micro hydro systems complement solar photo-voltaic energy systems because in many areas, water flow, and thus available hydro power, is high in the winter when solar energy is deficient. Electricity generation of micro-hydels is generally in the range of 5 kW to 100 kW. In certain circumstances, micro-hydro power can be more appropriate and profitable than other energy supply options. There are many micro-hydel installations in different parts of the world, particularly in developing nations which provide an economical source of energy without the consumption of fossil fuels. Micro-hydels not only bring light into peoples lives in the locality, but also give energy and water security to population, make people economically more stable, reduce the physical workload for women, enable the mechanisation of rural industries and lessen environmental damage from cutting wood for fuel and heat or harming aquatic fauna and flora. Moreover, no waste by products are produced unlike the energy generation based on fossil sources. Many countries have begun to embrace micro-hydro technology as a viable and alternative source of energy, especially for remote and rural areas. There are different replicable success stories on micro-hydro based projects in many developing countries including Nepal. In order to explore the wider prospects and share the best practices on micro-hydel, the Centre for Science and Technology of the Non-aligned and Other Developing Countries (NAM S&T Centre) and the Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) in collaboration with Alternate Energy Promotion Centre (AEPC), Kathmandu, Nepal announce the organisation of an international workshop on The Role of Micro-hydel for Developing Countries in Kathmandu, Nepal during 19-22 April 2013.

Objectives
The overall objective of the workshop is to demonstrate micro-hydro technology, its implementation and sharing the success stories to explore replication of successful models among the developing countries. The workshop will provide a valuable platform for sharing of knowledge, transfer of technology and capacity building, coordination and networking among the experts and professionals of the developing countries. The workshop will deliberate on various aspects of micro-hydels such as the potential and benefits of micro- and mini-hydels; micro-hydel turbines and their head range; site selection, microhydel installation, commissioning and maintenance; integrated approaches with other forms of non-conventional sources of energy; ecological implications; energy-societal-employment correlations; policy and planning issues; training, etc.

Technical Sessions Technical Sessions Field Visits

A detailed Session-wise Programme will be made available before the Workshop. About the Organisers NAM S&T Centre The Centre for Science and Technology of the Non-Aligned and Other Developing Countries (NAM S&T Centre; www.namstct.org) is an inter-governmental organisation with a membership of 46 countries spread over Asia, Africa, Middle East and Latin America. The Centre was set up in 1989 in New Delhi, India in pursuance of recommendations of various NAM Summit meetings for the promotion of South-South cooperation in science and technology. The Centre undertakes a variety of programmes, including organisation of workshops, symposiums, meetings and training courses and implementation of collaborative projects. It also offers short-term research fellowships to scientists from developing countries in association with various Centres of Excellence. The Centre also produces technical books and other scientific publications in different subjects. These activities provide opportunity for scientisttoscientist contact and interaction; familiarising participants on the latest developments and techniques in the subject areas; identification of the requirements of training and expert assistance; locating technologies for transfer between the members and other developing countries, dissemination of S&T information etc. In addition to the above, the Centre encourages academic-research-industry interaction in the developing countries through its NAM S&T-Industry Network. Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST), Kathmandu, Nepal Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) was established in 1982 with the main objective of the advancement of science and technology for overall development of the nation. To achieve the objective, NAST conducts research activities on the areas of alternate energy, biological resources, environment and climate study, molecular biotechnology, natural product chemistry and synthesis along with promotional activities such as organizing seminars/workshops, awarding and recognizing the contributions of scientists and technologists, science education, etc. Besides, the various functions undertaken by the Academy such as preservation and further modernization of indigenous technologies, identification and facilitation of appropriate technology transfer, promotion of research in science and technology, NAST is mandated to Advise Nepal Government on S&T policy and programs and technology transfer policy. Alternative Energy Promotion Centre (AEPC), Kathmandu, Nepal Alternative Energy Promotion Centre (AEPC) was established by the Government of Nepal (GoN) on November 3, 1996 as a focal agency for the promotion and development of renewable energy technologies (RETs) in the country. It runs under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment and provides direct financial and technical

assistance in terms of subsidy and capacity development for establishing and managing Renewable Energy (RE) systems at the community level. AEPC's Vision is to become an institution recognized as an international example of promoting large-scale use of renewable energy sustainable and a national focal point for resource mobilization. The focus is to make AEPC recognized as an active institution promoting RETs in the region. AEPC works collaborating with the various partners like ministries and its departments, non-governmental organizations, private sector, civil society and community/users groups for the development and promotion of RETs in the country. Participants The workshop programme has been primarily designed for policy makers in government departments and ministries, scientists and researchers, experts of private sector organisations and NGOs of the developing countries, with relevant background and active involvement in the subjects related to Micro-hydel. The selection of the participants will be strictly based on merit and relevance of their current responsibilities to the subject of the Workshop as well as the quality of the extended abstract of the paper submitted along with the completed nomination form. A pre-condition for participation in the Workshop is that the participants must submit the final manuscript of their presentation, in MS-Word format, at least a fortnight before the commencement of the programme. Venue The workshop will be held at Kathmandu, Nepal Resource Persons Resource persons for the workshop will comprise eminent experts from Nepal, India and other countries. Submission of Application Scientists and professionals desirous of participating in the Workshop, excepting those from Nepal, should submit their Nomination Forms (enclosed) directly to the NAM S&T Centre as early as possible, but latest by Monday, 18 th March 2013 . The applications from Nepal however should be submitted only to the local organisers in NAST, Kathmandu and NOT to NAM S&T Centre The Nomination Form should be completed in all respects, typewritten or in clear handwriting in capital letters, and no column should be left blank.
