INTRODUCTION

A ticker timer is used to study the motion of an object for a short period of time. When terminals are connected to the a.c. power supply, the vibrating steel strip will vibrate 50 times every second and make 50 dots a second on a tape being pulled through it. The time interval between two consecutive dots, time for one tick is s or 0.02 s.

Linear motion is motion in a straight line. Dynamics is the study of the motion of an object due to a force. Kinematics is the study of the motion of an object without being concerned with the forces which cause the motion. All physical quantities and vector quantities. A scalar quantity is quantities which have magnitude and direction.

DISTANCE AND DISPLACEMENT Distance is the total route taken by a motion. It is a scalar quantity, with magnitude only. Displacement is the distance taken with consideration of direction. It is the vector quantity, direction and magnitude is important. Both of them SI unit is meter (m).

ACCELERATION AND DECELERATION Acceleration is the rate of change of velocity. Acceleration, a = a= The SI unit of acceleration and deceleration is .

When an object moves faster and faster it is moving with acceleration. When the object moves slower and slower is moving with deceleration or negative acceleration.

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. A runway is set up as shown in figure 1. The ticker timer is set up at the higher end of the runway. The ticker tape is attached to the trolley by using a masking tape. The power supply is switch on and the trolley is let down. The dots that are printed on the tape are study.

SAFETY: In crowded laboratories, estimate the space needed by the tape puller and arrange the groups to avoid collisions.

OBJECTIVE

1. Students will be able to determine initial velocity, final velocity, average velocity, acceleration and displacement by using ticker timer.

2. Students know how to calculate the data and be able to analyze data and discussion

3. Variables: a) Manipulated : none b) Fixed : the mass of the trolley c) Responding : the length of the ticker tape

RESULT AND ANALYSIS

Total time taken to cover all the displacement = (11-1) strips (0.0210) = 10 0.2 =2s

DISCUSSION

1. What is the motion produce? The motion is acceleration because of the increasing of length produces. It is due to acceleration is the rate of change of velocity.

2. What is the time interval between two consecutive dots? The vibrating steel strip will vibrate 50 dots a second thus time for one tick is 0.02 s.

CONCLUSION: As the conclusion the graph shows the motion of acceleration. This is based on the distance between the dots is increasing and it shows that the trolley is moving faster which is accelerates.
