Introduction
This degree will teach you management and supervision techniques specific to the building industry while developing detailed knowledge about building processes and materials. Construction managers need to fully understand legal frameworks and the roles of various players within the industry, as well as being skilled with technology to manage their projects. These together with negotiation, presentation and communication skills, will be well honed during the course; and after two Industry Based Learning semesters of co-operative education in the construction industry you will know what the real world of building management is all about. The course has developed pathways for Quantity Surveying (QS) along with potential double majors in accounting and sustainability and upon satisfactory completion it is envisaged that students will be able to achieve membership of the Australian Institute of Building (AIB) and Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (AIQS).

Course Requirements
84 credit points comprising: (a) Required (66 credit points) as follows: - MJ0134 Major in Building and Construction Management (24 credit points)

Required units (21credit points) 5617 Accounting for Managers 4207 Introduction to Management 4977 Introduction to Business Law 6348 Information Systems in Organisations 6606 Government-Business Relations 8732 Problem Analysis and Statistics 8730 Problem Evaluation and Resolution Quantity Surveying Core Units (12 credit points)* 8519 Estimating and Measurement 1 7826 Estimating and Measurement 2 7829 Contract Administration 8527 Construction Procurement Work Experience / Industry Based Learning (9 credit points) Students will be required to undertake 80 days of work experience in the building and construction industry. This will form part of the formal assessment of the degree. Industry Based Learning will be a co-operative education component directed by the University working in conjunction with industry. Students will undertake distance learning subjects as well as a dissertation over two semesters, which may be offered in trimester mode. This component of the course comprises 8787 Industry Based Learning 1 8788 Industry Based Learning 2 8789 Industry Based Learning 3 * Additional units in Quantity Survey are required to be studied instead of open elective units for students seeking AIQS accreditation. (c) Open electives (18 credit points) as follows: 18 credit points open electives from any part of the University, as a major, a minor and/or individual units. In choosing electives students should note that no more than 30 credit points at level one is permitted for the entire course. Requirements for a degree with Honours: High performing students may be eligible to enrol in the Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours) course, and graduate with a Bachelor of Building and Construction Management (Honours) award.

Course Duration
Standard six semesters full-time and two semesters part-time, or equivalent. Maximum twenty-two semesters. International students will need to maintain a full-time load throughout their course and may complete in seven semesters.

Admission Requirements
Normal UC requirements for admission to an undergraduate course. Additional requirements: Students will be required to obtain the necessary certification to be able to enter a building site before commencing the Major in Building and Construction Management.

Assumed Knowledge
It is recommended that students have Year 12 Mathematics and English. International students need to meet the English language requirements of the University of Canberra.

Professional Recognition
This course has been successfully reviewed and has attained accreditation by the Australian Institute of Building (AIB) and the Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors* (AIQS) until December 2012. * AIQS accreditation requires certain units to be performed through the University of Canberra and distance learning through the University of Newcastle.
