Hello? (on the phone)
Cultural lnsight
Just as it is in different cultures, Korea has different phone etiquettes. One thing that is
noticeable is the many ways Koreans hang up the phone. Some people do not say
"bye," and simply say (eung) or I (ne), which can mean "ok," "yup" or "l under-
stand" when hanging up the phone. Some Koreans say "l am hanging up now (j
- kkeuneulge)" before they hang up the phone. The way people hang up differs from
person to person.

Vocabulary Focus #1 - Saying Hello (over the phone) - ^5/E?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ln Korean there is a different greeting when answering the phone. When someone is mak-
ing or receiving a phone call, ^5/E (yeoboseyo) is used. This is neither rude, nor polite.
lt is a neutral way of answering a phone call. ^5/E (yeoboseyo) is said when someone
first picks up the phone, and then ^5/E is typically used to respond to that.
