North East CARE Fair 2008

This event showcased the many support
programmes for children and youth that are
offered by the Family Service Centres (FSCs),
Voluntary Welfare Organisations (VWOs) and
other social service providers. More than 20
organisations took part in this fair to familiarize
residents with the various social assistance
schemes and services available for youth
and children.

Talking Dollars and Sense
Talking Dollars and Sense is a financial
budgeting programme that reaches out to
residents in financial difficulty. The programme
aims to help educate residents about the value
of money and guide them towards a better
financial position. Conducted by volunteers, it
is free for participants and available in English,
Mandarin and Malay. Since its introduction
in April 2004 more than 570 families have
benefitted from the programme.
Launch of North East Lunch Box Fund
To lessen the burden of financially-strapped
families, the NE Lunch Box Fund ensures that
needy students will have pocket money to
purchase their lunch. North East CDC together
with the sponsor Neptune Orient Lines (NOL)
has set aside $50,000 for the fund. With the
help of Student Advisory Centre to administer Mr Zainul Abidin Rasheed
the fund, 352 students from 22 schools have Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs

Rocking Good Times 2
Music and good memories rocked the stage.
Back by popular demand, Rocking Good
Times 2 proved to be a winning formula to
bond the community. Community leaders took
to the stage and residents joined in the singing
and dancing provided by well-known local
bands from the 70s and 80s.

District Musical ‘Live it Up!’
Our senior residents took to the stage in
this musical extravaganza that effectively
showcased active ageing. The event was a
creative platform for seniors to pursue their
interest in performing arts. Judging from the
delighted audience’s response, it was indeed
a winning performance.
Dance Xplosion 3
Music, costumes and slick moves! Dance Xplosion
blew the crowd away when 50 teams revealed
their talents in a variety of dance categories. From
‘Ethnic & Cultural’ to ‘Modern & Hip Hop’, Dance
Xplosion 3 brought together young and old with a
love for dance and music.
North East Schools Go Green 2
Students displayed their innovative ideas for
protecting one of the most precious resources
we have – the environment. Organised with
the National Environment Agency (NEA) and
sponsored by Senoko Powers, this event
gave students the opportunity to influence the
community to go green.
Celebrating A Cohesive Community
Racial Harmony celebrations dazzled the
neighbourhood in July this year. A relay marathon
spanning three GRCs marked this year’s Racial
Harmony Day on 5 July 2008. Running, cycling
and kayaking were just some of the modes the
marathon encompassed. Racial Harmony Day
was also marked with spectacular events like
street parades and carnivals at Aljunied GRC and
Hougang SMC, Tampines GRC and
Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC. To celebrate
the day in a special way, a new record
was entered in the Singapore Book
of Records with a 500-strong
human formation of the word
‘UNITY’ at Tampines GRC.

The Community
“We aim to be an inclusive society for young and old and we must connect with them in a
‘language’ that is relevant to their lifestyles. As more households are “wired” and “connected”,
the Internet is a good tool to reach out to residents and connect the community. But we must
not forget that even as we embrace new media, nothing can replace the warm, human touch,
the personal contact, something which we have nurtured in the North East CDC district.”

North East Dragon Boat Championship

The beat of the drums and the splash of the oars was the
dramatic backdrop for the ‘Adopt A VWO Programme’. This
event aimed at promoting social responsibility and community
involvement welcomed four corporations to the programme.
The organizations commemorated their commitment by forming Launch of Brisk Walking @
a 10-man dragon boat team. The teams represented were North East
Paya Lebar YEC paired with Society for the Aged Sick, Pioneer
Fresh air, merry companionship and a brisk
