1 Civil War DBQ Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal (Gettysburg Address, Lincoln). Lincoln states here in a section of the Gettysburg Address that the Founding Fathers built this nation so that all men may be equal. But the south treated Blacks as if they were lesser than whites. This resulted in the breakout of the Civil War. Lincoln sustains his belief that Blacks should live in equality with the Whites throughout the war. President Lincoln felt very strongly about carrying through with the war. Within the Gettysburg Address and his 2nd Inaugural Address, Lincoln clearly states that his belief in a steadfast reconciliation by means of attrition if need be. Lincoln believes that the war should carry out to repay the debt of lives lost so the nation may live. As Lincoln states, A final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation may live. It is all together fitting that we should do this (Gettysburg Address, Lincoln). Moving into Lincolns second term in office, the war is beginning to become highly aggravating. In the 3rd year of Lincolns first term, he delivers the Gettysburg Address. In the Gettysburg Address, Lincoln comes across in an angry state. He says that the north should hit the south hard because of what they have done. At this point Lincoln strongly encourages the progression of the war. Four years later at Lincolns Second Inaugural Address, his attitude has changed. Lincoln now hopes the mighty scourge of war may speedily pass away (2nd Inaugural Address, Lincoln). In the beginning of the war he seemed to be filled with anger. Now that the

war has been advancing for 4 years, he is ready for it to end. Lincolns attitude towards wanting to get revenge against the south changes also. With malice toward none, with charity for allfinish the work we are in, to bind up the nations wounds(2nd Inaugural Address, Lincoln) Abraham Lincolns Gettysburg Address and his Second Inaugural Address are differentiated emotionally. The Gettysburg Address is aimed towards the south, and how every live lost to the war will be avenged. The Second Inaugural Address was written by a calmer version of Lincoln, it stated that everyone would be forgiven as long as the war will end soon. Both speeches are about the same topic, but if one would look deeper they would notice that the speeches are very different from each other. Lincoln was a very strong president but he showed many traces of compassion.
