What are the treatment options for vein disease?

Depending on the ty pe and stage of v ein disease, there are many different treatments. Y our phy sician can ex plain all of the options. The following are common treatments performed for v ein disease:

Compression Stockings
For minor pain from v aricose v eins, a compression stocking may be beneficial. The compression stocking will assist the leg in the pumping of blood back to the heart. While the v ein disease sy mptoms may be reliev ed, compression stockings will not make the v aricose v eins go away .

Sclerotherapy
Used commonly for spider v eins and small v aricose v eins, sclerotherapy inv olv es injecting a small v olume of a liquid into the diseased v ein. The sclerosing liquid acts upon the lining of the v ein to cause it to seal shut, eliminating the v ein completely . Sclerotherapy is quickly performed in a phy sicians office and no anesthesia is required.

Surgical Vein Stripping

Historically , the only treatment for large v aricose v eins has been to surgically remov e or strip the v ein from the body . Surgical v ein stripping is done in an operating room under anesthesia and requires a considerable recov ery period for the patient. More recently , a modified v ersion of v ein stripping known as ambulatory phlebectomy has grown in use. In this v ersion of surgical stripping, multiple incisions are made to hook and remov e the v ein one portion at a time. More incisions are made than in standard v ein stripping.

Endovenous Laser Therapy

In the last few y ears, the use of lasers has become an accepted alternativ e to surgical stripping to treat v aricose v eins. In endov enous laser therapy , a thin laser fiber is inserted into the diseased v ein, generally through a small puncture in the leg abov e where the v isual sy mptoms appear. The phy sician then deliv ers laser energy through the fiber which causes the v ein to close as the fiber is gradually remov ed. Endov enous laser therapy can be performed in a phy sicians office in less than one hour, and the patient is encouraged to walk immediately following the procedure. Call T he Vein Institute &
