Teacher Candidate: Erica Shuler Grade: 1st Grade

Subject/EEDA/SSCA: Math Date and Time of Lesson:

Learning Objective: While exploring hands on geometry lesson, first graders will divide circles into 2-4 equal parts and refer to these parts as half of, fourth of, and quarter of. Also, students will be able to correctly use the words halves, fourths, and quarters to describe the varying portions of a circle. Alignment with Standards: 1.G.3 Partition circles and rectangles into two and four equal shares, describe the shares using the words halves, fourths, and quarters, and use the phrases half of, fourth of, and quarter of. Describe the whole as two of, or four of the shares. Understand for these examples that decomposing into more equal shares creates smaller shares. Developmental Appropriateness: Students have a basic understanding of sharing materialistic items with their peers and/or other individuals. Students are aware of equal, t o help with the explanation of equal amounts on both sides. Students have watched the movie The Little Rascals to understand the similarity between the jingle Ive got a pickle and Ive got a baseball. Assessment(s) of the Objectives:
Student will be pre-assessed with prompting questions given by the instructor. (Examples: Have you ever had to share anything? Do you know how I would cut the cookie? If I have two equal pieces to make a whole, do you know what that is called?) I will pause and observe the class throughout the lesson to evaluate students strategies for finding the correct fraction in comparison to the cutout piece. I will observe the fractions posted on the back of the cutouts to see if students are correctly listing the fractions as a form of formative assessment. I will provide students with a puzzle worksheet were students must put their cutout pieces in the correct spots on the worksheet to make a flower. I will provide students with a Sharing Cookies worksheet at the end of the lesson to measure their comprehension of cutting objects into equal pieces and referring to these pieces with the correct term (half, ,1/3, ext.) Accommodations: I will provide manipulative items to keep students more focused throughout the lesson. The majority of the lesson will be group lead to keep students on task; however, after the group lesson,, students will be instructed to complete the Sharing Cookies worksheet for class work and/or homework. If students finish the worksheet, they will then be instructed to read silently. I will provide students with little jingles to help them remember the different portions.

Materials: Smart Board, Power point presentation on Subway cookies in Geometry, scissors, pencils,
baseball cutouts (yellow color on the back), Cookie cutouts (green color on the back), pie cutouts (burnt yellow color on the back), pizza cutouts (pink color on the back) (cutout the outer circular shape before passing out; one of each cutout per student), puzzle worksheet (flower and sun picture) OPTIONAL: Baseball glove, bat, hat as a visual aid

(Prior to lesson, ask the students to get scissors, a pencil, and a dark colored marker (black, dark purple, red, and ext.)) STEP ONE: Introduction Have any of you ever had to share something with your brothers, sisters, cousins or friends? Students will respond with, Yes (students will probably automatically begin to tell stories about how they had to share) Get students back on track by adding, What are some of the things that you all have had to share? Students will respond with answers such as, my toys, food, ext. The other day, I had to share something with my brother Dustin. My brother is about almost two years younger than me and he is crazy! Well, my brother and I were throwing the baseball; a baseball somewhat like these I will pass out the baseball cutouts to students. (Optional: Bring glove and/or bat as a visual aid to describe or act out)

Now, how many baseballs does each person have? Students will respond with ONE! So, I would like for you to hold your baseball high in the air and repeat after me. o Me: Ive got a baseball, Ive got a baseball, Ive got a baseball, hey, hey, hey ,hey (to the rhythm of The Little Rascals) o Students: Ive got a baseball, Ive got a baseball, Ive got a baseball, hey (x4) Thats right, so I would like for you to turn your baseball over to the back of the sheet. This side of the baseball should be yellow. On this side I would like for you to write the number 1. (At this time I will click the next button on the presentation to show a baseballs front and back; on the back I will then write the number 1 to model for students what to do) After throwing the baseball for about 45 minutes, I looked down at my watch and it was 11:00 am. Do you all know what happens at 11:00 am? (11 am is the students lunch hour at school) Students will respond with LUNCH! Yes, it was time for lunch. So my brother and I went to subway. I will then press the next button on the presentation to show a picture of the subway sign or a subway building or type of advertisement Give students a minute if they mention their own opinions or experiences at Subway After eating a turkey and ham sub, I decided to get a chocolate chip cookie. (click next on the power point slide and a picture of subway and a cookie come up) Now, I asked my brother BEFORE I got the cookie if he wanted one, and he told me no. But, when I sat down, and I started to put the cookie in my mouth (cup hand in a C shape like holding a cookie and about to put it in my mouth), do you know what he said?! Students will respond with No, what? or Yes, he He told me that he wanted one! At that same moment, my mom called and said that she had made us a pie, so I decided that, instead of buying another cookie for my brother, my brother and I could just share the cookie that I had already had; that way, we could eat a piece of pie when we got home Step 2/ Problem Solving Standard 1: Problem Solving

So, with me today, I brought a picture that looks a lot like the cookie that my brother and I shared. Can I get two volunteers to help me pass them out? I will pick two students to help pass out the cookie cutouts (I will have already cut around the outside of the cookie to make the edges rounded). While the cookie cutouts are being passed around the room, I will prompt students with questions, such as, What kind of cookie do you think that I got based off of the picture I just gave you? or What is your favorite kind of cookie; do you like cookies? I will then click the next button on the power point to show a picture of the cookie cutout that the students now have in their hands (listed below)

Now, if I wanted to share the cookie with my brother, and after cutting the cookie, I wanted two EVEN pieces, how would I cut the cookie? Students will respond with answers, such as: I dont know or In half or Down the middle Thats right; we will cut it right down the middle. When you do this, you could also say that you are cutting it in half. So, right now, I would like for you to take you scissors and cut your cookie in half. I will observe the class to make sure that everyone is cutting the cookie across the dotted lines and that everyone is engaged So, what did we just do? Student will respond with, we cut the cookie in half We cut it in half! So, I would like everyone to hold your two cookie pieces and repeat after me o Me: We cut it in half, we cut it in half, oh my, my, we cut it in half. Heres one half (hold up one side) heres another half (hold up other side), oh my, my, we cut it in half! o Student will repeat phrase above Now, if you will, flip both HALVES of your cookie over to the back. The back of EACH HALF should be green. On this side I would like you to write and ONE HALF. (I will hit the next button on the presentation to display the back of the cookie (a green circle) and model for students how to write this information on the back)

After my brother and I left subway, we went back home. After walking in my front door, I could automatically smell my moms DELICIOUS blueberry pie! My mom said

that she also wanted a piece of the pie, so how many pieces of the pie would I have to cut? Keep in mind that my brother, my mom, and myself all want a piece of the pie. Student will respond with multiple answers, hopefully the main answer will be 3 pieces We will cut the pie into three pieces. This is a picture of what my moms looks like (I will pass out the pie cutouts to students) (The pie will be cut around the circular edges so that no background will be seen like in the one below)
